My Husband Let His Mistress Destroy My Daughter Chapter 1

Arabella came through the front door at 4:15, same as always. Except she wasn't the same. She was shaking.

Her uniform jumper had small dark spots on it, dotted down both arms like someone had pressed a pen too hard into her skin, over and over. She held Clover, her stuffed rabbit, so tight her knuckles had gone white. When she saw me, she didn't run. She just stood there in the hallway and started to cry.

"Mama, please don't make me go back. Please."

I knelt down. My hands found her arms before my brain caught up with what I was looking at. Puncture wounds. Small, precise, deliberate. Not scrapes from playground rough-housing. Not an accident.

"Who did this, baby?" My voice came out steady. I don't know how. Everything in me was screaming.

She just cried harder and buried her face in my neck.

I carried her to the bathroom, sat her on the counter, and took photos. Every wound. Arm, then the other arm, then her small legs where the marks continued under her tights. My hands didn't shake while I did it. I made sure of that. She needed me steady, so I was steady. I'd fall apart later, on my own time.

Then I opened the parents' group chat for Whitmore Prep Early Years and posted every photo, one after another, with a single line underneath.

**Evangeline Franklin:** My daughter came home today covered in puncture wounds. I want to know who did this and why no teacher noticed.

The replies started fast.

**Thalia Diaz:** omg that's just Cody being a kid lol. He said they were playing "doctor." Kids do weird stuff, don't make this a whole thing.

I stared at the name. Thalia Diaz. I'd heard it before, in passing, at pickup — a woman with glossy hair and a laugh that carried across the schoolyard. I'd never spoken to her directly.

**Angie Lewis:** honestly those photos look staged?? sorry but that's a lot of marks for "kids playing."

**Ainsley Bennett:** 😂😂😂

**Judith Campbell:** As Arabella's teacher, I'll note she has been a difficult presence in the classroom lately. I don't think it's fair to place blame without full context.

I read it twice. A difficult presence. My five-year-old, who cried herself to sleep last week and wouldn't say why.

Then Thalia sent another message. Photos this time. A wedding. White dress, string lights, Mateo in a black tux with his hand on her waist, both of them laughing at the camera.

**Thalia Diaz:** Since we're airing things out — maybe ask yourself why you're so desperate to make my son look bad. Everyone here knows the truth. You're not his wife. I am. Stop using your kid to shake down a married man for money.

The chat exploded. Laughing emojis. Angie typing something about how she'd "always suspected." A dozen names I barely recognized piling on, one after another, like a fire catching dry wood.

I put the phone face-down on the counter and looked at it for three seconds. My thumb found the jade bracelet on my wrist, the one that used to be my mother's, and I turned it once.

Then I picked the phone back up and called Declan Shaw.

"Evangeline." He answered on the second ring, the way he always did. Twenty years representing my family taught him that.

"I need divorce papers drafted for Mateo Hernandez," I said. "Full asset recovery. Everything. And I need you documenting a group chat starting now — I'm forwarding it to you."

Silence on the line. Then, careful: "Understood. Is Arabella—"

"She's hurt. I'll explain later."

I hung up before he could ask anything else.

I left Arabella with Marisol, our housekeeper, who has known her since she was born and would sit with her for a hundred hours if I asked. Then I walked to the garage and got in the Phantom. The Song Dynasty scroll was still in the trunk — I hadn't had time to bring it inside after yesterday's auction. Three hundred million dollars of eight-hundred-year-old silk, riding in the back like an afterthought. I didn't think about it once as I pulled out of the gate.

I was two blocks from the school when my phone buzzed again. A video this time, from Thalia.

I hit play at a red light.

Mateo, in a tux, at the Pinnacle Group Chairman's Dinner. Thalia on his arm in dark green silk, laughing up at him like they were the only two people in the room. The caption underneath: *Ask your "husband" why his real wife was on his arm at the Chairman's Dinner while you were home playing housewife.*

I knew that gala. I'd gotten the invitation myself, three weeks ago. I'd told Mateo I'd stay home — Arabella had a fever of 102 that night, and I didn't want to leave her.

The light turned green behind me. A horn blared.

I pulled over instead, onto the shoulder, and sat there with both hands on the wheel. One breath in. One breath out.

Then I put the car back in drive and kept going toward the school.
