Chapter 4

The Kessler account was worth $1.4 million. I know because I'd built the deck myself, three weeks of late nights, and I'd handed the follow-up call to Skyla only because Alden asked me to, in that voice he used now, the one that made every request sound like a test I'd fail if I said no.

She transferred the client to hold and forgot to come back. Eleven minutes. I know because I was standing outside her desk when the line finally clicked back over and Mr. Kessler's assistant said, cold as glass, that they'd need to "revisit the terms."

I wrote her up myself. Standard language, HR-approved template, nothing personal in it. I walked it to her desk and set it down without a word.

She read it. Her chin trembled first, then her shoulders, and by the time she reached the hallway she was sobbing loud enough that three people came out of the conference room to look.

I didn't follow her. I've learned that following a woman who wants an audience only gives her one.

By two o'clock, the write-up was gone from her file. I know because I checked. Alden had pulled it himself, no note, no conversation, like it had never existed.

I found him in the break room, holding two cups of soup from the place on the corner. Her favorite, tomato bisque, extra crackers.

"You reversed my write-up," I said.

"She was upset, Miley. It was her first month." He didn't look up from the tray. "It's one call. We've all dropped calls."

"Not calls worth seven figures."

"You're being harsh." He finally met my eyes, and there was something almost pleading in them, like he wanted me to just agree so we could both feel better. "She's trying."

"She's trying to keep her job by crying in a hallway. It's working."

He didn't answer that. He picked up the tray and walked it down to her desk, and I watched through the glass as he set the soup in front of her and let his hand rest on the back of her chair a beat too long. Just resting there. Like he owned the chair, or the woman in it, or both.

Priya's message came through twenty minutes later. *You need to document everything.* No emoji, no softening. I typed back a single word — *Already am* — and closed my laptop before I had to watch anyone else's hands land anywhere they shouldn't.

---

The boy started showing up on Thursdays.

"Daycare fell through again," Skyla told the front desk, loud enough for whoever was walking by, and Ryatt would trail behind her with a backpack shaped like a dinosaur, quiet, watchful, older around the eyes than a six-year-old should be.

I was in the elevator with them once, on the way up from a client meeting. Mark Ruiz, our VP of Sales, stepped in behind us, briefcase in hand, half on his phone.

Ryatt tugged Alden's sleeve. "Daddy, can we get pizza after?"

The elevator went very quiet. Mark's eyes flicked up from his phone, then to Alden, then to me, then back to his phone with the studied blankness of a man deciding this was not his business.

Alden didn't correct him. He crouched instead, right there between floors, and said, "We'll see, buddy," like it was the most normal sentence in the world.

I stared at the numbers ticking up over the door and said nothing, because I had already learned that my silence in that elevator would be replayed in the office gossip mill by lunch, and I would rather be the composed one than the one who made a scene.

---

I found Ryatt alone in the copy room two days later, standing on his toes to reach a stack of paper he had no business touching. I almost turned around. I didn't want to be alone with him. But he looked up at me first, and something in his small face went very still, the way a kid's face does right before it recites something memorized.

"You're not my real family," he said.

I didn't move. "Okay," I said. Just that. I wasn't going to fight a six-year-old for territory his mother had already claimed for him.

He blinked. For a second — just a second — his mouth opened like he wanted to say something else, something that hadn't been fed to him, and his eyes went uncertain, almost apologetic, a kid caught between a script and a feeling he didn't have words for yet.

"Ryatt." Skyla's voice came from the doorway, sweet and sharp at once. "There you are, baby. I told you to wait for Mommy."

She took his hand and looked at me over his head, and there was nothing sweet in that look at all. Just a flat, satisfied thing, like she'd checked a box.

She steered him out. I stood there holding a stack of warm paper from the copier, listening to their footsteps fade down the hall, and thought about the flicker on his face right before she showed up. That flicker was the only honest thing I'd seen from either of them in weeks.

I put the paper down. I went back to my office and started a new file on my laptop, and I named it exactly what it was: *Documentation.*
