Chapter 5

The revenue slide was still up on the screen when the room tilted.

I remember gripping the edge of the conference table. I remember Marcus from the board saying something about Q3 projections, his mouth moving, no sound behind it. I remember reaching for my water glass and missing it by an inch. Then the carpet came up to meet me, fast, and everything went white at the edges like a photograph left too long in the sun.

I woke up under fluorescent lights that hummed. An IV taped to the back of my hand. A blood pressure cuff squeezing my arm like a fist.

"You collapsed during a presentation," the nurse said, not unkindly. "Your blood pressure was 178 over 110 when they brought you in. You're severely dehydrated, and your body's been running on fumes for a while."

"How long was I out?"

"Long enough to scare seven board members half to death." She adjusted the drip. "We called your husband. He knows you're here."

He knows. I turned that phrase over in my head like a coin that wouldn't come up heads.

Visiting hours started at four. I watched the door from four to four-forty, tracking every set of footsteps in the hallway, every shadow that crossed the little window. At four-forty-two, my phone buzzed.

*Can't make it tonight. Parent-teacher conference for Ryatt — school called it mandatory, I couldn't reschedule. I'll come first thing tomorrow. Rest. I love you.*

I read it twice. Then I set the phone face-down on the blanket, because I didn't trust my hand not to throw it.

A parent-teacher conference. For a boy whose name he hadn't put on a single legal document, whose homework he helped with at our kitchen table, whose mother had cried her way out of a written warning in eleven minutes flat. That was mandatory. I was lying in a hospital bed with a needle in my arm, and that was mandatory.

I didn't cry. I want that on the record, even if only to myself. I lay there and watched the IV drip, one bead at a time, and thought about the FDR Drive in the rain, and the peonies with no apology, and I understood — really understood, for the first time — that I had become the emergency he rescheduled around.

The doctor came in a little after seven. Dr. Osei, according to the badge, a woman with kind eyes and a folder she held against her chest like she was deciding how to open it.

"Your blood pressure's coming down," she said. "That's good news. We're going to keep you overnight for observation."

"And the other news?" I said. I don't know how I knew there was other news. Maybe the way she was holding that folder.

She sat on the edge of the chair by my bed instead of standing at the foot of it, which told me something before she said a word.

"We ran a standard panel when you came in. Ms. Marshall — you're pregnant. About seven weeks, based on your levels."

The fluorescent light hummed. The IV dripped. Somewhere down the hall a cart wheel squeaked.

"Seven weeks," I repeated, like saying it twice would make it feel like mine.

"Given your blood pressure and the stress your body's under, we'll want to monitor this closely," she said. "But right now, everything looks stable."

I thought about the nightstand drawer. The pill pack I'd stopped reaching for the night I found the Instagram post, the night he slept in the guest room instead of answering a simple question. I hadn't taken a pill in — I did the math in my head — six weeks. Maybe seven. I hadn't decided anything. I had just stopped deciding, which turned out to be its own kind of decision.

"Do you want me to call anyone?" Dr. Osei asked, gently. "Your husband, maybe?"

I looked at the phone, still face-down on the blanket where I'd left it.

"No," I said. "Not tonight."

She nodded like she understood something she hadn't asked about, and maybe she did. She left the folder on the tray table and told me to rest, and the door clicked shut behind her the way doors had been clicking shut on me for months now — softly, politely, always somebody else's exit.

I put my hand on my stomach. Nothing to feel yet. Just the idea of something, small and stubborn, choosing to exist inside a body that had just collapsed on a conference room floor.

Six years I had put this off. Six years of *after the Series B,* *after we hit profitability,* *after things settle down.* And now here it was, arriving on its own schedule, in a hospital bed, on a night my husband chose a boy who wasn't legally his over a wife who was carrying one who was.

I didn't sleep much that night. I lay in the dark listening to monitors beep in soft, patient rhythms, and I thought: *he doesn't know yet.* And for the first time since Whole Foods, since the FDR, since the Instagram posts and the receptionist desk with a direct sightline into my office, I felt something other than exhaustion.

I felt clarity.

Whatever came next, I would not be walking into it blind.
