Chapter 3

The networking event was at a rooftop bar in the Flatiron, the kind of place with heat lamps shaped like torches and a signature cocktail named after the host company. I went because Alden couldn't — some school thing with Ryatt, he'd said, not meeting my eyes — and because showing up alone, composed, in a black dress that cost more than our first month's rent in Brooklyn, felt like the only kind of armor I had left.

I was refilling my water at the bar when a man in a navy blazer squinted at me like he was solving a math problem.

"Miley Marshall," he said. "You're Alden's wife. Ben Okafor — we were in the same econ seminar junior year. God, it's been forever."

"Ben." I smiled the smile I use for investors I don't trust yet. "Small world."

"Small industry," he said, laughing at his own joke. Then his face did something soft and nostalgic. "You know, I always wondered how things turned out for Alden. After Skyla, I mean. That whole thing was rough."

The glass was cold in my hand. I kept my voice light. "Rough how?"

"Oh, come on, you know the story." He waved a hand like he was swatting away a fly. "She bailed on him right when he decided to go all-in on the startup. Junior year, I think? He wanted to build something, she wanted a guy with a 401k already. She told him — I remember this because it was campus gossip for like a month — she told him she 'didn't sign up to be poor for a decade.' Brutal. The guy was a wreck."

I didn't say anything. I don't think my face moved.

"Anyway." Ben lifted his own glass, oblivious, already scanning the room for someone more useful to talk to. "Guess it worked out. You two built something real. That's rare."

"It is," I said. "Excuse me."

I drove home with the radio off. Manhattan slid by in smears of red and white, and I kept turning the sentence over like a stone in my palm. *She didn't sign up to be poor for a decade.* I thought about the woman in Whole Foods with her card declined at self-checkout, the boy crying against her leg, the way Alden had dropped our anniversary dinner mid-basket to go rescue her. I thought about myself at twenty-six, splitting a five-dollar bag of ramen in a studio with a radiator that only worked if you kicked it, and never once thinking to leave.

She left when it was hard. I stayed when it was hard. And somehow she was the one standing in his kitchen with a twisted ankle and a bouquet of white peonies waiting for her arrival.

Alden was already in bed when I got home, laptop glowing on his chest, Ryatt's spelling homework open in another tab. He glanced up. "How was the event?"

"Fine," I said, and I hung my dress in the closet and said nothing else, because some truths are too heavy to hand a man who's already decided not to catch them.

---

The email came four days later, forwarded to me by Priya Patel with no subject line change, just a row of exclamation points typed into the body like she couldn't find her own words.

*Effective Monday, Skyla Thomas will join the Midtown office as Front Desk Receptionist. Salary band approved outside standard range per founder authorization.*

I called Priya before I'd even finished reading it twice.

"He came to me directly," she said, and her voice had that flat, controlled quality people use when they're too angry to raise it. "I told him she doesn't meet the minimum qualifications. No admin experience, no scheduling software training, nothing. He said, and I'm reading this back to you exactly, 'I'm aware, Priya. Make it work.'"

"Did he cite the founder clause?"

"Word for word," Priya said. "Section four-point-two. Either co-founder can override HR hiring decisions in cases of — I actually don't remember the rest, I stopped listening."

I'd written that clause myself, six years ago, at two in the morning, so that neither of us would ever get bottlenecked by process during a hire that mattered. It was supposed to be a tool for building the company. He'd turned it into a crowbar.

"Her desk," I said. "Where is it?"

A pause. "Row three. Direct sightline to your office. I tried to move it, Miley. He said no."

I looked through my glass wall at the empty desk that would not stay empty past Monday, at the exact angle from which a woman I had never spoken to would be able to watch me answer calls, sign contracts, exist.

"Thank you for objecting in writing," I said. "Keep the paper trail."

By that afternoon the Slack channel had already lit up — someone had leaked the salary band, someone else had screenshotted the org chart with a raised-eyebrow emoji stacked six times in a row. I didn't read all of it. I didn't need to. I already knew what it meant.

He hadn't just crossed a line. He'd used the one tool we built together, in the one company we built together, to bring her closer to me — close enough that I'd have to watch.
