Chapter 3

Shane's voice carried a new edge that morning. I noticed it over breakfast, the way he said my name—not sharp, but careful, like he was testing a blade. 'You seem paranoid lately, Stella.' He didn't look up from his phone, scrolling through emails with his coffee cooling beside him. 'It's not healthy.'

I set down my teacup. 'Paranoid?'

'Always asking where I've been. Who I'm with.' He finally looked at me, his eyes soft but his mouth tight. 'It's like you don't trust me.'

The word 'trust' hung between us. I could taste it, bitter and sharp. I thought of the lease agreement. The hotel receipts. The way Cecilia's fingers had curled around his tie at the gallery opening. I said nothing.

'It's because of your upbringing,' he continued, sliding his phone into his pocket. 'You've never had to worry about anything real. Your father's money, your perfect life—it makes you fragile. You don't understand how the world actually works.'

I felt something cold settle in my chest. This was new. Before, he had loved my 'sheltered' background. It made me 'pure,' he used to say. Now it was a weapon he could wield against me.

'What does that mean?' I asked.

'It means relationships are work, Stella. Real ones. Not fairy tales.' He stood up, straightening his tie. 'I have meetings all day. Don't wait up.'

He kissed my forehead, the same spot he always kissed, and I wondered if he kissed her the same way. The thought followed me to the door as I watched him walk to the elevator.

The next day, it got worse.

'That dress makes you look insecure,' he said, eyeing the navy sheath I'd chosen for lunch with the gallery owner. 'It's like you're trying too hard.'

I changed. I wore the cream silk instead.

'You're being oversensitive,' he told me that evening, when I asked about a dinner he'd mentioned and then canceled. 'It's work. You know how it is.'

I nodded. I did know. I knew exactly how it was.

The investigator's envelope arrived on a Thursday. I was alone in my office at the Ward Foundation, reviewing grant proposals. The courier knocked twice, handed me a thick manila envelope, and left without a word. I locked the door behind him.

My hands were steady as I opened it. Inside: a stack of photographs, crisp and damning. Shane and Cecilia entering the hotel on three different dates. A coffee cup, carefully bagged, with a lab report attached. DNA confirmation. Bank statements showing transfers—$75,000, then $110,000, then $250,000—all to an account I didn't recognize. A new lease agreement, this one in Cecilia's name.

I spread them across my desk. Each one was a nail in the coffin of something I had already accepted was dead. I looked at them for a long time, my face reflected in the glass of the framed photo of Shane and me on our wedding day.

I gathered the papers. I slid them into a folder. I placed the folder in my desk drawer and locked it. The key felt heavy in my palm.

Three days before my birthday, Shane came home with a presentation.

'We're having a party,' he announced, spreading glossy photos across the coffee table. 'A real gala. At the estate.'

I looked down at the images: a marquee tent, crystal chandeliers, a string quartet. 'A birthday party?'

'You only turn thirty-one once,' he said, his smile bright and eager. 'We're inviting everyone. The Calloways, the Hendersons, your father's partners. I've already called the caterer.'

He took my hands in his. 'I want to do this for you, Stella. You deserve it.'

His thumbs stroked my knuckles. The same gesture he had used when we were dating, when he wanted to reassure me that he was serious. Now it felt like a performance, each touch calculated for effect.

'It looks beautiful,' I said. 'Thank you.'

He kissed me, a soft press of lips. 'You're worth it.'

I smiled against his mouth. I thought of the photographs in my desk drawer. I thought of the bank transfers. I thought of Cecilia's camellia dress and the way she had touched Shane's arm at the gallery.

'Yes,' I said. 'I am.'

I begged my billionaire husband to just call the registry or visit her, but he claimed he was too busy with board meetings to care. Until the hospital informed me that my daughter's life-saving bone marrow had been suddenly reallocated to another patient. When I walked down the VIP hallway, I found my husband. He wasn't at a board meeting. He was gently peeling an apple, playing the loving father to his widowed mistress's daughter. When my pale, sick daughter called out for him, he instinctively stepped back in disgust. I later discovered the mistress had bribed the hospital to swap the registry numbers, stealing my daughter's marrow for her own child. When I demanded a divorce, my husband laughed in my face. "You haven't worked a day in four years. You're a purchased asset. You don't get to walk away." He threatened to freeze my accounts, assuming I would be starving on the streets and begging to come back. His family and the mistress publicly mocked my background, waiting for me to be utterly humiliated. They thought I was just a useless, penniless housewife who relied entirely on his last name to survive. They didn't know I never needed a single cent of his money. I packed my bags, took my daughter, and made a single phone call. Three days later, at his family's elite banquet, my husband waited to see me beg. Instead, the most powerful corporate magnate in North America walked right past him, bowed to me at a perfect ninety-degree angle, and spoke. "Welcome back to the throne, Madam."
