Chapter 4

The box was on the breakfast table when I came downstairs.

White ribbon. Cream paper. A small card in Shane's handwriting: *For my Stella. From Paris, with love.*

I stood there in my robe and looked at it for a moment. The morning light came in flat and gray through the kitchen windows. Shane was already gone—early meeting, he'd said last night, kissing my temple before I was fully awake.

I poured my coffee first. Then I sat down and pulled the box toward me.

The wrapping smelled like camellias. Of course it did.

I lifted the lid. Layers of white tissue paper, folded back one at a time. A silk scarf on top, pale ivory, soft as water. I set it aside.

Underneath it was a small plastic stick in a zip-lock bag.

I didn't move for a long time.

The test strip was faint but readable. Two lines. And in the small oval window at the base, a date marker—six weeks. The brand was French. The kind you bought at a pharmacy when you were trying to be discreet.

I set the box down on the table. Very carefully. The way you set down something that might shatter if you let it drop.

I walked to the bathroom. I turned on the tap. I gripped the edge of the sink with both hands and looked at myself in the mirror—the woman in the silk robe with the coffee still warm on the counter and the birthday party starting in nine hours.

My knuckles went white.

I breathed in through my nose. Out through my mouth. Once. Twice.

Then I opened the medicine cabinet, took out my lipstick, and put it on. A deep burgundy, the color I had chosen for the gown. I pressed my lips together. I checked my reflection one more time.

I walked back out and finished my coffee.

---

By eight o'clock, the Ward estate blazed.

Chandeliers threw gold across the marble floors. The string quartet played something low and sweet near the east terrace. Two hundred people moved through the ballroom in silk and black tie, and I moved through them like I had been born for exactly this—because I had.

The burgundy gown fit the way armor fits. I greeted the Calloways. I kissed Arthur's cheek. I laughed at the right moments. I held my champagne flute and never let it reach my lips.

I was waiting.

Cecilia arrived at half past eight.

White dress. Camellia print. Of course.

But tonight the dress was cut differently. The fabric draped loose at the waist, soft and forgiving, and beneath the silk there was the faintest swell—the kind most people wouldn't notice. I noticed. Shane noticed. I watched his jaw tighten from across the room before he smoothed his expression back into something social and warm.

Cecilia moved through the crowd like she belonged there. She hugged people she barely knew. She said *Estrella is so generous* and *I'm just so grateful to be here.* She touched her collarbone when she laughed.

Then she found me.

We stood six feet apart in the center of the ballroom. The music played. Guests swirled around us.

She raised her champagne flute.

A small lift. A private toast. Her eyes steady on mine, warm and glittering and absolutely merciless.

I raised mine back. I smiled.

*Keep going*, I thought. *We're almost there.*

---

It happened at ten fifteen.

I saw her move toward the staircase. I had been watching her all night—not obviously, not in a way anyone would clock—but I had been watching. I knew the shape of what was coming the way you know the shape of a storm before it breaks.

She climbed three steps. Four. She positioned herself at the landing where the chandelier light hit best, where the whole room had a sightline.

She found Shane in the crowd. I watched her face shift—a flicker of distress, manufactured and perfect. Her hand went to the railing. Her body swayed.

Then she let go.

She went down the lower steps in a slow, controlled tumble, one hand cradling her abdomen, her cry pitched just high enough to cut through the quartet.

The room stopped.

Shane moved before anyone else. I watched him cross the ballroom in long, fast strides, his face open in a way I hadn't seen in months—raw and unguarded and completely unaware of the two hundred people watching him. He dropped to his knees beside her. He said her name. He gathered her up.

He stood with her in his arms.

He did not look at me. Not once. Not as he carried her toward the door. Not as the guests parted for him. Not as the front door opened and the cold air rushed in.

I stood in the center of the ballroom with my champagne flute in my hand.

The quartet started playing again after a moment. Someone touched my arm—a question in their eyes, concern, confusion.

'She'll be fine,' I said. My voice was level and warm. 'Please, everyone, enjoy the evening.'

I smiled.

Inside my chest, something that had been holding on for a very long time finally let go.

I was ready now.

I begged my billionaire husband to just call the registry or visit her, but he claimed he was too busy with board meetings to care. Until the hospital informed me that my daughter's life-saving bone marrow had been suddenly reallocated to another patient. When I walked down the VIP hallway, I found my husband. He wasn't at a board meeting. He was gently peeling an apple, playing the loving father to his widowed mistress's daughter. When my pale, sick daughter called out for him, he instinctively stepped back in disgust. I later discovered the mistress had bribed the hospital to swap the registry numbers, stealing my daughter's marrow for her own child. When I demanded a divorce, my husband laughed in my face. "You haven't worked a day in four years. You're a purchased asset. You don't get to walk away." He threatened to freeze my accounts, assuming I would be starving on the streets and begging to come back. His family and the mistress publicly mocked my background, waiting for me to be utterly humiliated. They thought I was just a useless, penniless housewife who relied entirely on his last name to survive. They didn't know I never needed a single cent of his money. I packed my bags, took my daughter, and made a single phone call. Three days later, at his family's elite banquet, my husband waited to see me beg. Instead, the most powerful corporate magnate in North America walked right past him, bowed to me at a perfect ninety-degree angle, and spoke. "Welcome back to the throne, Madam."
