Chapter 3

The first morning Saige left a note on Mason's desk, I found it by accident. I was looking for the cable bill — trying to understand what I was still allowed to pay with the thirty-seven dollars I had left — and there it was, tucked under his laptop. Small cream cardstock. Her handwriting, all loops and flourishes.

*You're doing the right thing. She needs boundaries. I'm proud of you.*

I put it back exactly where I found it. I went into the bathroom and ran the tap hot enough to fog the mirror, because if I looked at my own face right then I was going to say something out loud, and saying it out loud would make it real.

Saige moved a suitcase into the guest room that afternoon. Mason carried it in himself. I watched from the kitchen doorway, holding a coffee I couldn't hear myself pouring, and neither of them looked at me. Not once.

"Just until her lease is up," Mason said later, when I finally asked. "It's temporary."

"This is our home."

"It's a twelve-thousand-square-foot penthouse, Everly. There's room."

I wanted to say it wasn't about room. It was about the principle of bringing the woman who shattered my mother's bracelet into the space my mother had visited, had loved, had sat in that reading nook by the window drinking tea with me on Sunday mornings. But I didn't say any of that. I just nodded. Because what else was I supposed to do? He controlled the money. He controlled the staff. He controlled the narrative.

He controlled everything.

Saige started appearing at breakfast after that. She wore soft cashmere and no makeup, hair pulled back in a loose bun, and she brought Mason "home-cooked" frittatas that smelled like truffle oil and came in containers with a discreet logo I recognized from a private chef service that charged two hundred dollars a plate. She set them on the table with a shy smile, like she'd woken at dawn to whisk eggs herself.

"You're so good to me," Mason said, kissing her temple.

I ate toast. Alone. At the far end of the table Mason's interior designer had picked out, the one I'd signed off on, the one that cost more than most people's cars.

I started reading lips around then. I had to. The muffling in my ears had become something else — not silence, but a thick, suffocating hum that turned voices into shapes without sound. I watched mouths instead. Saige's lips when she said *mental health episode* to someone on the phone in the hallway, thinking I couldn't hear. Mason's lips when he said *space* and *struggling* and *it's temporary, she just needs time*.

I knew what he was doing. He was building a story. A story where I was fragile, unwell, someone who needed to be managed. And every person who might have helped me — every colleague of my father's, every friend I used to meet for lunch in Midtown — was hearing that story before they ever heard mine.

I tried anyway.

I called Richard Leighton first. He'd worked with my father for twenty years. He'd been at my wedding. He'd held my hand at my father's funeral and told me Arthur would have been proud of the woman I'd become.

The phone rang four times. When he answered, his voice was careful. Cautious.

"Everly. How are you holding up?"

"I need to talk to you," I said. "It's about Mason. About the company—"

"I actually just spoke with Mason yesterday," Richard said, and something in his tone shifted. Gentle. Pitying. "He mentioned you've been under a lot of stress. Losing your mom, the health issues. It's understandable."

"Richard, he took the money for her memorial plot. He put it into—"

"I think maybe you should focus on taking care of yourself right now. Mason's doing a great job with the portfolio. Your father would want you to rest."

He hung up before I could say anything else.

I tried two more calls. Both went the same way. Concern. Sympathy. A gentle suggestion that I was overwhelmed, that Mason was handling things, that I should take time.

No one asked what I needed. No one asked what was true.

I sat by the penthouse window that night and watched the city below. Cars moved like blood cells through arteries of light. People walked dogs. Couples held hands. The world kept turning, and I was twelve stories above it, behind glass I couldn't open, in a home I couldn't leave, married to a man who had turned me into a ghost in my own life.

I used to move through that city freely. I used to meet friends for brunch in the West Village. I used to visit my mother every Sunday. I used to exist.

Now I was just a problem to be managed. A wound Mason was tired of dressing.

I pressed my palm flat against the glass. I felt the cold through my skin, a shock that traveled up my arm and into my chest. I couldn't hear the traffic below. I couldn't hear the wind against the building. I couldn't hear my own breathing.

But I could feel the cold. And I could feel my heartbeat, still there, still stubborn, still refusing to stop.

That had to be enough.
