Chapter 2

The package arrived on a Tuesday. Small cardboard box. No logo. I signed for it at the door while Palmer was upstairs on a conference call.

Four wireless cameras. Tiny things. Each one no bigger than a deck of cards. I'd driven to a CVS three towns over to buy the prepaid debit card. Paid cash. Used a burner email for the shipping confirmation. The kind of precautions that would've felt paranoid a week ago.

Now they just felt necessary.

I unwrapped them on the kitchen counter. Read the instructions twice. Downloaded the app to my phone—not the family account, a new Apple ID I'd created at the library—and started testing.

The first camera went in the living room. I tucked it on top of the bookshelf behind a ceramic vase, angled down toward the couch and the hallway. You'd never see it unless you were looking. The second went in the kitchen, wedged between the cookbooks and the microwave. The third I mounted in the hallway outside Owen's bedroom, disguised as part of the smoke detector casing. The fourth—Palmer's home office—I hid inside a decorative wooden box on the shelf behind his desk, lens pointing out through a knothole.

It took me two hours. My hands didn't shake once.

When Palmer came downstairs that evening, he glanced at the living room camera. Frowned slightly.

"What's that?"

I kept my voice light. Easy. "Security camera. I've been nervous since I heard that noise last week. You know, the one I told you about? I just wanted some extra eyes while you're at work."

He blinked. Shrugged. "Good idea, actually. Can't be too careful."

Then he went back to his phone. Didn't ask where I bought them. Didn't ask how many. Didn't ask to see the app.

I smiled. Stirred the pasta sauce. Told him dinner would be ready in ten.

That night, I lay in bed beside him and watched the live feeds on my phone under the blanket. Four small squares of grainy footage. The living room empty and dark. The kitchen counter gleaming under the pendant lights. Owen's hallway, his nightlight glowing soft and blue at the baseboard. Palmer's office, his chair pushed in, his desk lamp off.

Nothing. Yet.

I closed the app. Set the phone facedown on the nightstand. Stared at the ceiling and waited for my pulse to slow.

---

The first useful footage came three days later.

I was at the grocery store with Owen, letting him pick out a cereal he'd never eat, when my phone buzzed. Motion alert. Living room camera.

I opened the app.

Gloria was on the couch. Owen stood in front of her, small and still, holding his backpack. He must've just gotten home from school. She was leaning forward, her face sharp and cold in the afternoon light.

I turned the volume up. Held the phone close.

"You know what you are?" Gloria's voice came through tinny but clear. "Your mother's little mistake. That's what Palmer calls you when you're not around. Her baggage."

Owen didn't move. Didn't speak. His face went very blank. The way it did when he was trying not to cry.

I stood there in the cereal aisle. My hand tightened around the phone so hard the case creaked.

Gloria kept talking. "If it were up to me, you wouldn't even be here. But your mother trapped him. That's what women like her do."

I saved the clip. Logged the timestamp in my notebook that night. Wrote three lines in careful print: *Gloria—living room—3:47 PM—'mistake,' 'baggage,' 'trapped.'*

The second clip came two days after that.

Owen had spilled juice on Gloria's purse. An accident. The kind of thing that happens when you're seven and carrying a cup that's too full. I watched it unfold on my phone in real time from the upstairs bathroom.

Gloria's hand shot out. Grabbed Owen's arm. Her fingers dug in, white-knuckled and vicious. Owen gasped. The cup hit the floor.

"Clumsy little—" She didn't finish. Just squeezed harder. Shook him once.

I wanted to run downstairs. Wanted to scream. Wanted to rip her hand off my son and throw her out of my house.

But I didn't.

Because Palmer was there.

I could see him in the background of the frame. Standing in the doorway to the kitchen. Leaning against the doorframe. Phone in his hand. He glanced up once. Saw the whole thing. His mouth twitched. Not a frown. Not concern.

A smirk.

Then he looked back down at his screen. Typed something. Walked away.

I saved that one too. Watched it four more times that night after Owen was asleep. Studied Palmer's face in the frame. The angle of his shoulders. The way he turned and left without a word.

I wrote it all down. Date. Time. Description. I drew a star next to Palmer's name.

By the end of the week, I had eleven clips. Saved. Backed up. Catalogued.

Eleven pieces of evidence that my husband didn't love my son. That his mother abused him. That I had been raising Owen in a house where the people who smiled at him in public hurt him the moment I turned my back.

I didn't confront them. Didn't cry. Didn't ask why.

I just kept recording.

Because when the time came—and it would come soon—I was going to need every single second.
