My Husband Hired Men to Ruin Me Chapter 1

Two years. That's what I kept whispering to myself as I lit the last candle.

Two years since Palmer slid the ring on my finger in Central Park. Two years since I stopped bracing for the other shoe to drop. The dining room glowed soft and gold. I had made his favorite—roast chicken with rosemary potatoes, a small chocolate cake cooling on the counter. Owen was already asleep upstairs, curled around his stuffed dinosaur.

My phone buzzed on the marble.

**Palmer:** *Stuck at the office, babe. Home by nine. Don't wait to eat. Love you.*

I smiled at the screen. Typed back a heart. Told myself nine wasn't so late.

I poured a glass of wine and sat with it for a while, listening to the hum of the fridge. The candles bent slightly in the air from the vent. I thought about the tiramisu recipe I'd been meaning to try. Palmer loved tiramisu.

His iPad was on the kitchen counter, plugged into the charger. I picked it up, opened the browser, and started to type.

Except the browser wasn't empty.

A tab was already open. Reddit. Some anonymous account—*ThrowawayHusband_88*.

I almost swiped it away. My finger hovered.

Then I read the title.

*"How do I force my second-marriage wife (she has a kid from before) out of the marriage with nothing?"*

My hand went still.

I told myself it was a coincidence. A random post. Palmer must have clicked something. He read Reddit sometimes—stupid car threads, stock threads. This wasn't him.

I scrolled anyway. I had to.

The post was long. Detailed. The writer described a wife—*divorced, one son from a previous relationship, sweet, trusting, keeps the books at some accounting firm.* He described how she cooked every night. How she kept a leather notebook by the bedside. How she had "softened him up" until he could barely stand looking at her.

My chest went cold.

That notebook was six feet away from me, on the console table by the stairs.

I kept reading. The replies were a horror show. Fake affair. Drain the joint account. Move assets offshore. One user suggested planting drugs. Another suggested paying a man to sleep with her and take photos.

And then, halfway down—Palmer's reply. His own account. His own words.

*"Already ahead of you. Hired two guys through a contact. They break in Friday night while I'm 'stuck at work.' Rough her up a little, get the photos, out before the alarm resets. Timing is everything. She'll never see it coming."*

Friday night.

Tonight.

I set the iPad down very, very slowly. Like it was a live thing.

My ears were roaring. The candles blurred. Somewhere far away, the ice maker dropped cubes into the freezer tray, and I flinched like a gunshot had gone off.

*Breathe. Aleyna. Breathe.*

I didn't cry. That surprised me. My hands were shaking so hard I could see the wine trembling in the glass, but my eyes were dry. Some part of me—some quiet, old part—had already known. Had been waiting to be told.

I thought of Owen upstairs. His small foot poking out from under the blanket the way it always did.

And something inside me clicked into place. Like a lock turning.

I picked the iPad back up.

Screenshot. Screenshot. Screenshot. Every reply. Every timestamp. Palmer's whole comment history under the throwaway. I opened a new tab, created a burner Gmail—random letters, random numbers—and emailed every image to myself. Then I emptied the browser history. Cleared the cache. Closed the Reddit tab exactly the way I'd found it, one line down from the search bar.

I set the iPad back on the charger. Adjusted the angle. Perfect.

That's when the kitchen monitor flickered.

We had cameras—Palmer's idea, ironically. A little screen mounted under the cabinet cycled through the feeds. Front door. Backyard. Garage.

The garage feed had two men in it.

Dark jackets. Hoods up. One of them was already through the side door, easing it shut behind him. The other was pulling on latex gloves.

My knees almost gave.

I knew, then, in a way that had nothing to do with the Reddit post. I *knew*. The kind of knowing that lives in your spine.

I was the target. Tonight was the night.

I didn't run. I couldn't. My purse was on the counter—thank God, thank God—my keys inside. I grabbed it. Slipped out of my heels. Padded barefoot to the back door off the laundry room, the one that opened onto the side yard.

My hand was on the knob when I heard a floorboard creak in the front hallway.

I didn't breathe. I opened the door an inch. Two. Slipped through. Eased it shut behind me until the latch clicked so softly I felt it more than heard it.

Then I was running. Barefoot across the wet grass. Around the hedge. Down the driveway to where my car sat under the streetlight. I didn't look back at the house. I couldn't. If I looked, I'd see the kitchen window, the candles still burning, and something in me would break that I couldn't afford to break yet.

I drove.

The grocery store on Baxter was open twenty-four hours. I parked crooked under the fluorescent buzz of the lot. Sat in the driver's seat with my hands at ten and two.

Eleven minutes.

I counted them on the dashboard clock. Eleven minutes of shaking so hard my teeth clicked together. Eleven minutes of crying without sound, without moving my face, the way I'd taught myself to cry in the shower years ago when Owen was a baby and I didn't want him to hear.

At minute twelve, I wiped my face with the hem of my sweater. Went inside. Bought olive oil. Eggs. A bottle of sparkling water. Told the cashier I was making a late dinner. Smiled.

When I got home, the garage was empty. The candles were still burning. My iPad sat exactly where I'd left it.

Twenty minutes later, Palmer walked in with a dozen red roses.

"Sorry, babe." He kissed my forehead. His lips were cool. "Traffic was a nightmare."

"Dinner got cold," I said. My voice came out steady. Warm, even. "I saved you a plate."

He smiled that easy smile of his. Sat down. Picked up a fork.

I watched him eat.

And somewhere behind my ribs, a very quiet voice—one that sounded almost like my own and almost not—said: *I am going to take everything from you. Piece by piece. And you will not see it coming.*

Upstairs, later, in the dark, I lay beside him and stared at the ceiling. I did not sleep. I planned.

By morning my leather notebook had a fresh page. A list. Evidence. Accounts. Cameras. One name at the bottom, underlined twice.

*Regina Torres.*
