Chapter 3

I found a bench in a small park near the river.

The wind off the water was sharp and freezing. It cut right through my coat, but I barely felt it. I sat on the damp green slats, my fingers stiff with cold. I dug my phone out of my pocket.

My thumbs trembled as I scrolled through my contacts. I stopped at a name I hadn't called in years.

*Maxwell Harvey.*

I pressed the call button and held the phone to my ear.

It rang once. Twice. Then the line clicked.

"Soleil?" Maxwell’s voice was deep, steady, and dry as paper.

A lump rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down. I gripped the phone tighter.

"Maxwell, I need your help," I said. My voice was quiet, but it didn't shake. "I need to take back what's mine."

There was a brief pause on the other end. No questions. No gasps of surprise. He didn't ask how I was doing. He knew what kind of man Travis was, even if he had stayed polite at our wedding.

"Tell me everything," Maxwell said softly. "From the beginning."

I sat on that bench for forty minutes. I told him about the missing leather binder. I told him about the *Eater* article, the SoHo watch, the rooftop party, and the words Travis had spoken behind that closed dining room door. I told him how Kennedi had smiled at me while wearing my family's stolen work on her wrist.

Maxwell listened. He didn't interrupt once.

"Come to my office tomorrow at nine," he said when I finished. "Bring every document you have."

That call became the first solid ground I had stepped on in years.

At eight fifty-five the next morning, I stepped off the elevator on the fourteenth floor of a brick building near City Hall.

Maxwell’s office smelled of old paper, leather, and black coffee. A framed black-and-white photo of my father, Maximus, sat on the credenza behind his desk. In the picture, Dad was smiling, holding a bundle of fresh rosemary.

Maxwell stood up to shake my hand. He looked the same as he always had—neat gray suit, gold wire-rimmed glasses, and eyes that missed nothing.

He didn't waste time on small talk. He walked over to a metal filing cabinet, unlocked the bottom drawer, and pulled out a thick manila folder tied with string.

He laid it on the desk and untied the knot.

"Your father was a wise man, Soleil," Maxwell said. He adjusted his glasses and opened the folder. "Thirty years ago, he brought me your grandmother’s handwritten books. He knew the culinary world was full of sharks. So we filed for federal heritage protection."

He tapped a stamped document with the James Beard Foundation’s seal.

"The Edwards collection is classified as protected cultural property," Maxwell said, looking up at me. "It belongs to the Edwards estate. To you. It was never transferred to Travis. Not a single page."

"Travis told me it was just a dusty notebook," I said, a bitter taste in my mouth. "He said nobody cared about it."

Maxwell gave a thin, cold smile.

"Travis is a thief who got lucky," Maxwell said. "What he did isn't just a marital dispute, Soleil. Using those recipes for commercial profit without authorization is intellectual property theft. It’s fraud. It's misappropriation of protected cultural heritage."

He leaned forward, his knuckles resting on the mahogany desk.

"I can destroy him in court," Maxwell said, his voice dropping an octave. "But I don't just want a private settlement for you. I want him finished. To do that, we need proof. We need an airtight paper trail."

"Tell me what to do," I said.

"Go home," he said. "Gather every piece of evidence you can find. Every photo, every video, every draft. Match his new menu against your father's writing. When the time comes, we hit him so hard he won't know which way is up."

Travis didn't come home that night.

He sent a quick text at seven: *Working late on the brand launch. Don't wait up.*

I didn't reply. I knew where he was. He was in Kennedi’s high-rise apartment, drinking wine and congratulating himself on a future built on my father's bones.

The apartment was dead silent. I locked the front door, turned on the desk lamp, and got to work.

Years ago, before I ever met Travis, I had scanned every single page of my family’s notebook onto an external hard drive. Dad had made me do it as a backup. I plugged the drive into my laptop.

There they were. Hundreds of high-resolution files. My father's neat, upright cursive. My grandmother's faded blue ink in the margins.

Next, I opened my personal cloud archive.

I pulled up timestamped videos from eight years ago. In the clips, I was in my father's old sunlit kitchen, wearing a flour-dusted apron. I was talking to the camera, explaining how to toast the coriander seeds just right, how to balance the cider vinegar in the braising broth. The dates on the files were clear: 2016. Travis hadn't even worked in a professional kitchen back then.

I opened a blank spreadsheet.

On the left side, I pasted high-resolution screenshots of Travis's new restaurant menu and Kennedi’s viral videos.

On the right side, I pasted my father’s original handwritten recipes.

I lined them up, one by one.

The braised pork shoulder. Travis called it his "signature heritage roast." The spice ratios were identical down to the eighth of a teaspoon.

The wild blackberry tart. Kennedi had posted a clip calling it her "modern summer revelation." Right next to it, on my screen, was my grandmother’s margin note from 1954: *Add two drops of almond extract to the crust for sweetness.* Kennedi had said the exact same words in her video, verbatim.

My fingers moved across the keyboard with a steady, rhythmic clicking.

I didn't feel angry anymore. The heat had burned away, leaving behind something cool and sharp as a carving knife.

For seven years, I had used my patience to forgive him. Now, I used it to take him apart.
