Chapter 4

Rain tapped against the high windows of Maxwell’s office. It was nearly nine at night.

Folders covered the dark mahogany desk. Spreadsheets, printed screenshots, and scanned pages from my family’s notebook lay side by side under the green banker's lamp.

I stared at a copy of my father’s recipe for smoked duck with cherry glaze. His neat handwriting seemed to blur.

A cold weight pressed into my chest. My hands dropped into my lap.

“I gave it to him,” I whispered.

Maxwell didn't look up right away. He was making notes in the margin of a draft.

“What was that, Soleil?” he asked gently.

“I gave it to him,” I repeated, my voice cracking slightly. “Dad told me to protect it. He looked me in the eyes on his deathbed and made me promise. And I just handed it to Travis because he smiled and kissed my forehead. I broke Dad's trust.”

The guilt felt like swallowing broken glass. It had been sitting in my throat for days, choking me.

Maxwell stopped writing. He set his black fountain pen down on the blotter with a soft click. He took off his wire-rimmed glasses and looked at me.

“Soleil, look at me,” he said.

I looked up. His gray eyes were steady.

“Your father trusted your judgment, Soleil,” Maxwell said, speaking without being asked. “If you trusted Travis, Maximus trusted Travis—through you. The failure is not yours. It is the failure of a man who was trusted and chose to steal.”

The room was dead quiet, save for the rain on the glass.

It was the closest Maxwell had ever come to sentiment in all the years I had known him. He didn't offer a hug or empty pity. He gave me the truth.

The knot in my chest loosened. The hot shame that had paralyzed me for weeks finally melted away.

I took a deep, clean breath. I picked up my pen.

I stopped questioning myself. I started preparing.

Two days later, Maxwell worked his back channels.

He reached out to Dean Allen. Dean was an icon at the James Beard Foundation and one of the most respected food critics in the country. He had covered the culinary scene for forty years.

Maxwell arranged a meeting in a private conference room downtown. I sat beside Maxwell as Dean walked in, wearing a tweed jacket with silver hair combed neatly back.

Dean sat down and pulled my father’s scans toward him. He put on his reading glasses and turned the pages in silence.

“I knew it,” Dean muttered, shaking his head.

I leaned forward. “You knew?”

Dean looked up at me with tired, knowing eyes. “Three months ago, Travis invited me to a private tasting. He served a braised pork collar with fermented plum. It was extraordinary. But when I asked him about the acid balance, he gave me buzzwords. He talked about ‘modern energy’ and ‘vibrant disruptors.’"

Dean gave a dry chuckle.

“A man who actually invents a sauce like that talks about time, salt, and heat,” Dean said. “Travis didn't cook from experience. He cooked from memory. Someone else's memory.”

Maxwell slid a legal pad across the table. “We’re filing federal IP theft and heritage misappropriation claims, Dean. We need your testimony.”

Dean didn't hesitate for a second.

“Set up the camera,” Dean said firmly. “I’ll give a sworn video deposition right now. Travis Webb is a charlatan. And I will gladly be in the room when you pull the curtain back.”

An hour later, we had it on high-definition video. Dean Allen, on record, testifying to the hundred-year lineage of the Edwards family recipes and Travis's outright theft.

We had the lock, and now we had the key.

While we built our case in quiet rooms, Travis and Kennedi flooded the city with noise.

Their promotional blitz was everywhere. Food blogs ran daily teasers about their upcoming fast-casual flagship in SoHo. Kennedi’s social media became an endless reel of high-gloss videos.

I sat at my kitchen table on Sunday morning, scrolling through her feed.

The studio kitchen was set up like a movie set. Bright ring lights reflected in stainless steel counters. Kennedi stood center frame in an apron, smiling playfully at the camera.

“Hey guys!” she chirped in a clip. “Travis and I have spent months reimagining classic flavors for the modern palate. Innovation is all about taking the dusty old rules and breaking them wide open.”

She plated our heritage braised short ribs on a trendy brioche slider, drizzling it with a bright orange aioli.

That afternoon, she dropped a post that blew up instantly.

It was a split-screen photo. On the left was an intentionally bad, dim picture of a traditional rustic stew. She labeled it *Traditional Version*. On the right was her plated, brightly colored version, garnished with edible flowers, labeled *Kennedi’s Original Concept*.

Her caption read: *Honoring the past, reimagining the future. See you all at the SoHo launch this Friday!*

The post had over eighty thousand likes in two hours. Comments poured in, calling her a genius and a visionary.

I stared at the screen. I didn't get angry. My heart rate didn't even jump.

I pressed the side buttons on my phone. *Click.*

Screenshot saved.

I opened our encrypted cloud folder, labeled the image *Exhibit 22_Kennedi_Public_Claim*, and dragged it into the evidence drive.

Then I closed my phone and placed it facedown on the counter.

Let them build their tower as high as they wanted. It only meant they had further to fall.
