Chapter 2

I drove myself to the Upper East Side on Thursday afternoon. The address from the investigator's report was a brownstone on a quiet block—not the penthouse, but the townhouse where the file said Heidi and Jake spent their weekends. I hadn't told anyone where I was going. Not Marcus, not Diana. This wasn't business. This was something else entirely.

The street was lined with parked cars and afternoon sunlight. I pulled up across from the address and turned off the engine. I was wearing a simple black dress, nothing that would draw attention. Just a woman in a car, watching.

I didn't have to wait long.

The front door opened and a girl stepped out—tall, young, wrapped in what looked like designer loungewear. Even from across the street, I recognized her immediately. Kensley Elliott. The girl from the video. The girl wearing my mother's necklace.

She paused on the steps, typing something on her phone with quick, manicured fingers. Then she looked up, somehow sensing my gaze, and her eyes locked onto mine through the windshield.

She started walking toward my car.

I got out.

"Who are you?" she called, her voice carrying across the sidewalk. "You're on private property. You need to leave."

I stepped onto the sidewalk and faced her. Up close, she was even more striking—all angles and expensive skin care, her hair swept into an artful messy bun. She couldn't have been more than eighteen, but she carried herself with the kind of entitlement that comes from never being told no.

"I'm Sienna Carter," I said.

Her expression didn't change. "Okay, and? That's supposed to mean something to me? You're still trespassing. I'm calling security."

I let her talk. I was looking past her now, at the necklace around her throat.

It was the Cartier. My mother's Cartier. The pink diamond constellation piece she'd commissioned six months before she died. It had been missing for five years. The insurance company had paid out three million. I'd told myself it was gone forever.

Now it was hanging around this girl's neck like a cheap trinket.

I felt something shift inside me. Not anger. Not even grief. Something colder and more final.

"You should go," Kensley said, her phone already in her hand. "This is a private residence. I don't know who you think you are, but—"

"I think I'm the woman who bought that necklace," I said quietly.

She stopped mid-sentence. For the first time, uncertainty flickered across her face.

"What are you talking about? This is my necklace. My dad gave it to me. Who do you think you are, coming here making claims—"

"Your dad," I said, "is my husband. And that necklace belonged to my mother. It's been missing for five years."

The color drained from her face. She took a step back, then another. Her hand went to the diamonds at her throat.

"You're lying," she whispered. But she wasn't sure. I could see it in her eyes—the sudden doubt, the scrambling to process what I was telling her.

I held my ground. "I'm not lying, Kensley. I'm the one who paid for this house. I'm the one who bought that necklace. I'm the one who's been funding all of this for eighteen years."

Before she could respond, a car pulled up behind mine. The door opened and Jake stepped out, his face tight with tension. He was followed by another figure—Heidi, emerging from the townhouse, her hair pulled back, her eyes narrowing as she saw me.

They stood together on the steps, the three of them forming a grotesque tableau: Jake in his tailored suit, Heidi in her cashmere sweater, and Kensley between them, my mother's necklace glinting at her throat.

Jake's face went through a series of expressions—surprise, confusion, and then a slow, ugly calculation as he realized what was happening.

"Sienna," he said, his voice controlled but strained. "What are you doing here? This is... this isn't what it looks like."

I looked at the three of them. I looked at the life they'd built with my money, my trust, my blindness.

I smiled.

"Actually, Jake," I said, "it's exactly what it looks like. It's exactly what it's been for eighteen years. And now it's time to pay."

His eyes widened. He took a step forward, but I held my ground. Behind me, I heard the soft sound of car doors opening. Diana and her team were arriving. Right on schedule.
