Chapter 3

Jake's face reset fast. Too fast.

"Kensley isn't—" He stopped. Cleared his throat. Started again, his voice finding that warm, reasonable register I'd heard him use in a hundred boardroom hallways. "She's a family friend's daughter. I mentor her. Her father and I go back years. I should have told you about the penthouse arrangement, I know that, but it's not—"

"Jake." Heidi's voice came from the steps behind him. Flat. Certain. Done.

He turned slightly. She was already walking down toward us, arms crossed, her cashmere sweater pulled tight against the afternoon chill. She looked at me the way someone looks at a piece of furniture they've been waiting to throw out.

"Stop," she said to him. Not a request. "It's over. You said it was handled."

"Heidi—"

"No." She stopped beside him and looked directly at me. Fifteen years. Fifteen years she had stood in my kitchen, handed me supplements, smiled that small pleasant smile. Now she looked at me like I was the intruder. "You should have figured it out years ago," she said. Her voice was loud. Proprietary. The voice of a woman who had been waiting a long time to use it. "You were so busy running your empire that you didn't notice what was happening in your own home. That's not Jake's fault. That's yours."

The afternoon felt very quiet.

I didn't answer her. I kept my eyes on Jake.

He was making a calculation. I could see it—the slight shift in his jaw, the way his shoulders dropped, the moment a man decides he doesn't need the mask anymore. He stepped forward, putting himself in front of Heidi and Kensley. Deliberate. Declarative.

When he spoke, his voice was a register I had never heard in eighteen years of marriage. Cold. Almost gentle in the way that cruelty sometimes is.

"You were never going to keep me forever, Sienna." He said my name like he was setting it down. "You're a machine. You know how to build things, how to close deals, how to manage assets. But you don't know how to love. You never did." He glanced back at Heidi and Kensley, and something in his face softened. Performed softness, but he believed it. "This is my real family."

He was watching my face. Looking for the devastation he expected. The crack in the armor, the flinch, the moment I came apart in front of him on a public sidewalk so he could carry it with him forever.

I gave him nothing.

I stood very still and I thought about my mother's Limoges cup on my desk. I thought about the gray pre-dawn of my office two days ago and the one hour I had given myself and the way I had closed that door behind me when it was done.

Kensley moved.

She stepped around her father with the easy confidence of a girl who had never once been stopped. She came at me with both hands and shoved—hard, flat-palmed against my shoulders—and I stepped back once on the pavement.

I didn't fall. I didn't grab her. I looked at her.

She slapped me.

The sound cracked off the brownstone facade and the parked cars and the quiet afternoon air. Sharp and clean and final.

No one moved. Jake stood where he was. Heidi's mouth curved at the corner.

My cheek was warm. I raised one hand and touched it—one brief, light touch—and then I looked at the necklace at Kensley's throat. The teardrop ruby. The diamond pavé chain. My mother's hands had held that piece. My mother's voice had described it to the Cartier craftsman over the phone the year she got her diagnosis, the year she decided she wanted to leave me something that would last.

I looked at Jake.

"I see," I said.

Two words. Quiet enough that Kensley had to lean forward slightly to hear them.

I turned and walked to my car.

Behind me I heard Heidi say something—a short, satisfied sound, not quite a laugh. I heard Jake exhale, slow and relieved, like a man who has just watched a storm pass.

I got in. I closed the door. I sat for a moment with both hands on the wheel.

In my rearview mirror, Diana Holt's black sedan pulled to the curb. Behind it, two more. I watched Jake's reflection as he noticed them. Watched the relief on his face begin, very slowly, to change into something else.

I pulled out my phone and sent Marcus one message.

*Now.*

Then I straightened the car key in the ignition until it sat perfectly upright, and I waited, and I felt nothing at all except the cold clean clarity of a woman who has already won.
