Chapter 3

Elliot came home from the hospital looking like he'd aged five years in two hours. He dropped his briefcase by the door and walked straight to the bar. Poured three fingers of Scotch. Drank it standing up.

I was at the dining table with my laptop. Quarterly reports. I didn't look up.

"We need to talk," he said.

I kept my eyes on the screen. "About what?"

"About you."

I closed the laptop. Folded my hands on top of it. "I'm listening."

He walked over. Stood across from me. He didn't sit. "Zoya showed me your medical records," he said. His voice was flat. Careful. Like he was defusing a bomb. "From Mount Sinai. From before we were married."

I didn't move. "What records?"

"Terminations. Multiple procedures. You never told me."

The air in the room changed. Got thinner. I kept my hands folded. Kept my face still. "Those records are sealed. She had no legal right to access them."

"That's not an answer," Elliot said.

I looked at him. Really looked. At the man who'd knelt on a hospital floor ten years ago and promised me everything. At the man who'd stopped touching me three years ago because he couldn't stand what other people whispered about me. At the man who'd brought his mistress to Thanksgiving dinner and let her flash a ring bought with his family's money.

"No," I said quietly. "It's not."

He stared at me. Waiting. Wanting me to explain. To defend myself. To give him the exit ramp his guilt had been begging for across a decade.

I didn't.

I opened my laptop again. Went back to the quarterly reports.

Elliot stood there for another thirty seconds. Then he walked out.

I didn't cry. I'd stopped crying years ago, after I realized tears only made him angrier. I just sat there with my hands on the keyboard and my eyes on the screen and something cold spreading through my chest like frost.

The internal memo went out six days later. I was in the back of a town car when my phone buzzed. The subject line said: "Organizational Announcement—Garza Group Leadership."

I opened it.

*Effective immediately, Dr. Zoya Morales has been appointed Vice President of Operations, Garza Group. Dr. Morales brings extensive expertise in organizational management and strategic planning. Please join us in welcoming her to the executive team.*

*—Elliot Garza, CEO*

I read it twice. Then I placed the phone face-down on my lap. The driver asked if I wanted to change the route. I said no.

When I got home, I went straight to the guest room. Locked the door. Took out my phone and called Margaret Voss.

"He just made her VP of Operations," I said.

Margaret didn't ask who. "When?"

"Today. Company-wide announcement."

There was a pause. I heard papers rustling. "That gives her access to everything. Board materials. Financial records. Shareholder lists."

"I know."

"Sabrina, if she's planning something—"

"She is," I said. "And we're going to let her."

Another pause. Longer.

"You want me to start purchasing," Margaret said. Not a question.

"Yes. Small tranches. Stay under the disclosure threshold. Target the minority holders. The ones who panic easy."

"Understood. I'll need you to sign some documents."

"Send them tonight. I'll have them back to you by morning."

I hung up. Sat on the edge of the bed. Looked at the photograph in the bottom drawer. The girl at the garden party. White dress. Champagne. Laughing at something she couldn't remember.

I closed the drawer without taking it out.

Two weeks later, Elliot left for Europe. London, Paris, Berlin. A roadshow for potential investors. He'd be gone fourteen days.

Zoya moved the morning after his plane took off.

The first termination notice went out at nine AM. Richard Chen, CFO. Thirty-two years with the company. Fired by email. No severance negotiation. Just a security escort to his office and a box for his personal items.

By noon, three more were gone. General counsel. Chief operating officer. Head of investor relations. All of them Charles Garza's people. All of them institutional memory.

By the end of the week, the hallways at Garza Group headquarters felt like a morgue. People walked fast. Kept their heads down. Stopped talking in the elevators.

The stock dropped six percent on Monday. Nine percent by Wednesday. By Friday, the investor hotline was flooded.

Margaret called me every evening with updates. "We picked up another four percent today. Mostly from the Kellerman trust. They're spooked."

"Keep going," I said.

"Sabrina, we're at thirty-one percent now. Combined with Charles's proxy, you have control. You could call the vote tomorrow."

"Not yet."

"Why?"

I looked out the window of the guest room. The city lights stretched out like scattered diamonds. Like the ring on Zoya's finger.

"Because I want her to think she's winning," I said.

Six weeks after Elliot's announcement, Margaret sent me the final tally. Thirty-four percent. Purchased in small, untraceable tranches through the Delaware LLC. Combined with Charles Garza's signed proxy—twenty-two percent—I held fifty-six percent of Garza Group's voting shares.

Enough to remove a CEO.

Enough to do anything.

I printed the document. Put it in a folder. Locked it in the desk drawer next to the medical report and the photograph of the girl I used to be.

Then I sat down and wrote an email to the Garza Group board of directors.

The subject line said: "Request for Emergency Session."

I didn't send it yet. I just saved it to drafts and closed my laptop.

Outside, the city glittered. Inside, I folded my hands on the desk and sat very still.

Waiting.

I curled up on the company sofa waiting for Ayden Martin when I casually clicked into a video that was only a few seconds long. A hand with distinct knuckles was hooked by slender fingertips in an utterly intimate way. The caption read like the girl's soft murmur. "While the grown-ups discussed business, I quietly reached out to his hand. I didn't expect that he, who was rational and composed in work matters, couldn't stay rational with me." I smiled and gave it a like. "Ayden, look at how girls these days love writing these CEO romance stories, claiming that presidents like you secretly hold hands during business talks. Is it real or fake?" Ayden did not even lift his head and only said faintly, "Stop watching these." I asked with my mouth, but in my heart I knew the Ayden I knew would never do that. After five years of marriage, every time there was a social event he only pushed me into the lounge, let alone stage these idol drama scenes. I lowered my head and suddenly noticed the watch on the hand in the video. A luxury watch. The anniversary gift I gave Ayden was also the same luxury watch.

I stood in the shadows of the hospital, watching my wife kiss another man while my grandmother lay dying upstairs. Just minutes ago, Erlene had snapped at me over the phone, calling me a "needy child" and claiming she was stuck at a business meeting across town. Now, she was stepping out of a red Porsche in a designer dress, wrapped in the arms of Andrew Hanson, the man who was supposed to be her "sick friend." "I'm not going up," Erlene said coldly when I confronted her in the rain. "I don't like watching people die. It's depressing. Tell her I came by." She looked at my soaked, cheap hoodie and my scuffed sneakers with pure disgust before turning her back on me to return to her lover’s side. I had to go back to the ICU alone and lie to my grandmother with her final breath, telling her Erlene was waiting just outside the door. As the heart monitor flatlined at 2:14 AM, my phone buzzed with a call from my mother-in-law, who screamed that I was a "worthless loser" and demanded I sign divorce papers immediately so her daughter could finally be with a "real man." For three years, I lived as a ghost, a poor driver who endured their insults and hid my true identity just to have a simple life with the woman I loved. I sacrificed my future for a family that treated me like a stray dog, only for them to spit on me while I held my grandmother’s cold hand. Why did I stay in the shadows for so long? Why did I let these people believe they could crush me under their expensive heels? I walked out of that hospital and threw my thick, black glasses onto the wet asphalt, watching a delivery truck grind them into dust. I didn't need the disguise anymore. I drove my rusted Honda to the towering iron gates of the George Estate, where the security team dropped their batons and snapped into a terrified salute.
