Chapter 4

The housekeeper's name was Rosa. She'd been with me for eight years. She knew I took my coffee black in the morning and with cream after three PM. She knew which dry cleaner didn't over-starch the linens. She knew not to ask questions when I came home from the hospital five months ago and went straight to the guest room and didn't come out for two days.

I found her crying in the kitchen on a Tuesday morning.

"Mrs. Garza," she said when she saw me. She wiped her eyes fast. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean—"

"What happened?"

She looked down. Her hands were shaking. "Dr. Morales said my services are no longer required. She said Mr. Garza approved the termination. She said I have until Friday."

I set my coffee cup down on the counter. Kept my voice level. "Did she give a reason?"

Rosa shook her head. "She said the household needs a fresh start. New standards."

I looked at her. This woman who'd ironed my clothes and restocked my medicine cabinet and never once asked why I'd stopped sleeping in the master bedroom. This woman who'd left a plate of food outside my door the night I lost the baby and hadn't said a word when I left it untouched.

"You'll receive six months' severance," I said. "And a reference letter. I'll have it ready by tomorrow."

Her eyes filled again. "Thank you, Mrs. Garza."

I picked up my coffee and walked out before she could see my hands start to shake.

The dining room looked different. The sideboard had been moved. The chairs were rearranged. The painting my mother gave me as a wedding gift—a small Matisse, nothing showy—was gone. In its place was a modern piece I'd never seen before. All sharp angles and cold colors.

I stood in the doorway. Didn't go in.

Footsteps behind me. I turned. Zoya was coming down the hall in a cream silk blouse and tailored pants. She looked like she'd just stepped out of a magazine spread.

"Sabrina," she said. Smiled. "I was hoping we'd run into each other. I wanted to talk about the dinner party."

"What dinner party?"

"Tomorrow night. Elliot's investors. I'm hosting. Just a small group. Twenty people." She gestured toward the dining room. "I had the space refreshed. It needed updating."

I looked at her. At the ring on her finger catching the morning light. At the way she stood in the center of the hallway like she owned it.

"This is still my home," I said.

Her smile didn't change. "Of course it is."

I heard him before I saw him. Elliot's footsteps on the stairs. He came down carrying his briefcase. Stopped when he saw us both standing there.

"Everything okay?" he asked. He was looking at Zoya.

"Fine," she said. "I was just telling Sabrina about tomorrow's dinner."

I turned to face him. "You fired Rosa."

He adjusted his tie. Didn't meet my eyes. "Zoya thought it was time for a change. The household needs better management."

"She's been here eight years."

"Then she had a good run." He looked at me now. Really looked. And there was something in his face I'd never seen before. Not anger. Not guilt. Satisfaction. "This is still my home," I said again. Quieter.

Elliot stepped closer. Lowered his voice so only I could hear. "Then act like a wife worth keeping."

I didn't move. Didn't blink. Just looked at him until he looked away first.

Then I walked past both of them. Down the hall. Up the stairs. Into the guest room.

I locked the door.

Took out my phone.

Called The Carlyle.

"I need a suite," I said. "Long-term. Under the name Chapman."

The woman on the other end didn't hesitate. "Of course, Ms. Chapman. When would you like to check in?"

"Today."

I packed one suitcase. Clothes. Toiletries. The fireproof safe key. The photograph from the bottom drawer. I left everything else.

On my way out, I passed the dining room again. Zoya was inside, directing two men as they hung new curtains. She saw me in the doorway. Smiled.

"Leaving?" she asked.

I didn't answer. Just kept walking.

The Yale Club smelled like old leather and older money. Charles Garza was already seated when I arrived. Private corner table. No one within twenty feet.

He didn't stand when I sat down. Just pushed a folder across the table.

"Open it," he said.

Inside was a document. Fifty pages. Dense financial tables. At the top: *Chapman Family Capital Contributions to Garza Ventures, 1962-1968. Present Value Analysis.*

I scanned the summary page. The numbers were staggering.

"Your grandfather loaned my father two million dollars in 1962," Charles said. His voice was quiet. Flat. "At below-market rates. Without that capital, there would be no Garza Group. The returns, calculated forward at standard appreciation, would be worth approximately eight hundred million today."

I looked up. "Why are you showing me this?"

"Because you need to understand something." He leaned forward slightly. "You are not taking anything. You are recovering."

I folded my hands on the table. The way he'd taught me. The way I'd learned meant you were serious.

"When it is time," I said, "I will call the vote. Be ready."

He nodded once. "I will be."

I left the folder on the table. I didn't need to take it. I'd already memorized the numbers.

The email came three days later. *Renee Park, Senior Business Correspondent.* Subject line: *Request for Comment—Garza Group Leadership Transition.*

I forwarded it to Margaret Voss without opening it.

She called me an hour later. "Renee Park is good. She's been covering Garza Group for years. If she's asking questions, other people are too."

"What do you think she knows?"

"Probably the executive terminations. Definitely the stock slide. She's fishing."

"Decline comment," I said.

Margaret paused. "Or we could give her something. Not attributed. Just enough to keep her interested."

I looked out the window of my Carlyle suite. The city stretched out below. Lights everywhere.

"Send her the internal memos," I said. "The ones documenting Zoya's restructuring decisions. Make sure they can't be traced back to us."

"Understood."

I hung up. Sat very still.

Outside, the city glittered. Inside, I folded my hands in my lap and waited.

The story was building. Slowly. Piece by piece.

Soon it would be time to light the match.

I curled up on the company sofa waiting for Ayden Martin when I casually clicked into a video that was only a few seconds long. A hand with distinct knuckles was hooked by slender fingertips in an utterly intimate way. The caption read like the girl's soft murmur. "While the grown-ups discussed business, I quietly reached out to his hand. I didn't expect that he, who was rational and composed in work matters, couldn't stay rational with me." I smiled and gave it a like. "Ayden, look at how girls these days love writing these CEO romance stories, claiming that presidents like you secretly hold hands during business talks. Is it real or fake?" Ayden did not even lift his head and only said faintly, "Stop watching these." I asked with my mouth, but in my heart I knew the Ayden I knew would never do that. After five years of marriage, every time there was a social event he only pushed me into the lounge, let alone stage these idol drama scenes. I lowered my head and suddenly noticed the watch on the hand in the video. A luxury watch. The anniversary gift I gave Ayden was also the same luxury watch.

I stood in the shadows of the hospital, watching my wife kiss another man while my grandmother lay dying upstairs. Just minutes ago, Erlene had snapped at me over the phone, calling me a "needy child" and claiming she was stuck at a business meeting across town. Now, she was stepping out of a red Porsche in a designer dress, wrapped in the arms of Andrew Hanson, the man who was supposed to be her "sick friend." "I'm not going up," Erlene said coldly when I confronted her in the rain. "I don't like watching people die. It's depressing. Tell her I came by." She looked at my soaked, cheap hoodie and my scuffed sneakers with pure disgust before turning her back on me to return to her lover’s side. I had to go back to the ICU alone and lie to my grandmother with her final breath, telling her Erlene was waiting just outside the door. As the heart monitor flatlined at 2:14 AM, my phone buzzed with a call from my mother-in-law, who screamed that I was a "worthless loser" and demanded I sign divorce papers immediately so her daughter could finally be with a "real man." For three years, I lived as a ghost, a poor driver who endured their insults and hid my true identity just to have a simple life with the woman I loved. I sacrificed my future for a family that treated me like a stray dog, only for them to spit on me while I held my grandmother’s cold hand. Why did I stay in the shadows for so long? Why did I let these people believe they could crush me under their expensive heels? I walked out of that hospital and threw my thick, black glasses onto the wet asphalt, watching a delivery truck grind them into dust. I didn't need the disguise anymore. I drove my rusted Honda to the towering iron gates of the George Estate, where the security team dropped their batons and snapped into a terrified salute. My father was waiting on the marble steps, but I wasn't there for a peaceful reunion. I was there to reclaim my inheritance and make sure Erlene realized exactly what she had thrown away.
