Chapter 2

The dreams came back in pieces. Not every night. Just enough to keep the wound open.

I'd be twenty-four again, in the white dress with all the lace. The car would pull up outside the reception venue. The door would open. Hands would reach in.

Then I'd wake up.

I didn't scream anymore. I'd stopped screaming years ago, after the third time Elliot rolled over and asked if I could please keep it down.

I sat at the desk in the guest room and wrote down what I remembered. Not because I wanted to. Because I needed the facts organized. Dates. Locations. The name of the detective who took my statement at Mount Sinai. The attending physician who documented the bruises. The social worker who sat beside my bed and said I was very brave, which meant she didn't know what else to say.

Three days of captivity. That's what the police report called it. Like I'd been on a trip.

Elliot came to the hospital in a suit that looked like he'd slept in it. His eyes were red. He knelt on the floor beside my bed—the tile was gray, I remember that—and he put his face in his hands and cried. He said it was his fault. He said he'd spend the rest of his life making it right. He said he loved me.

I believed him.

Ten years. I gave him ten years to keep that promise.

I closed the notebook and locked it in the desk drawer. Then I picked up my phone and scrolled to a contact I hadn't called in over a decade.

Margaret Voss answered on the second ring. "Sabrina Chapman," she said. Not a question. A statement. Like she'd been expecting this.

"I need a shell company," I said. "Delaware LLC. Untraceable to me or the Chapman family."

"What's the purpose?"

"Acquiring shares in Garza Group. Quietly."

There was a pause. Not hesitation. Just the sound of Margaret thinking.

"How much capital are we talking?" she asked.

"However much it takes to get to thirty-four percent."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"I've been waiting for this call," Margaret said finally. Her voice was steady. Calm. The voice of someone who'd been a Chapman family attorney for forty years and had seen every kind of war. "I'll have the paperwork ready by Friday. And Sabrina?"

"Yes?"

"Your father would be proud."

I hung up before my hands could start shaking.

I didn't know if that was true. My father had never forgiven me for marrying Elliot. He'd said I was throwing away everything the Chapman name stood for. He'd said love was a luxury people like us couldn't afford.

He died two years ago. We hadn't spoken in eight.

I opened the desk drawer again and took out the other document. The medical report from five months ago. The one that said "spontaneous abortion, first trimester" in cold clinical language that didn't capture what it felt like to wake up in a pool of your own blood at three in the morning, alone, because your husband was in Boston with his mistress.

I'd driven myself to the ER. I'd checked in under my maiden name. I'd paid cash. The attending physician had asked if there was someone she could call. I'd said no.

I had three copies of that report now. One in a fireproof safe. One with Margaret Voss. One in a safety deposit box at a bank Elliot didn't know I used.

I put the report back and locked the drawer.

My phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.

*Dinner tomorrow? Le Bernardin, 8pm. Private room. Just us. —E*

I stared at the screen. Elliot never texted from unknown numbers. He also never invited me to dinner anymore. We ate in the same house and barely spoke.

I didn't reply. I set the phone face-down on the desk and walked to the window.

The city stretched out below. Lights everywhere. Thousands of them. Millions. All those people living their lives, and not one of them knew that the woman standing in this window had spent ten years disappearing.

I pressed my fingertips against the glass. It was cold.

Somewhere across town, Zoya Morales was probably getting ready for bed. Maybe she was thinking about the ring on her finger. Maybe she was thinking about how easy this had all been. How Elliot had opened every door for her himself.

Maybe she thought she'd already won.

I pulled my hand back from the window. My fingerprints stayed on the glass for a moment, then faded.

I walked back to the desk, opened my laptop, and started a new document. At the top, I typed: *Garza Group Minority Shareholders—Contact List.*

Then I began to work.

I curled up on the company sofa waiting for Ayden Martin when I casually clicked into a video that was only a few seconds long. A hand with distinct knuckles was hooked by slender fingertips in an utterly intimate way. The caption read like the girl's soft murmur. "While the grown-ups discussed business, I quietly reached out to his hand. I didn't expect that he, who was rational and composed in work matters, couldn't stay rational with me." I smiled and gave it a like. "Ayden, look at how girls these days love writing these CEO romance stories, claiming that presidents like you secretly hold hands during business talks. Is it real or fake?" Ayden did not even lift his head and only said faintly, "Stop watching these." I asked with my mouth, but in my heart I knew the Ayden I knew would never do that. After five years of marriage, every time there was a social event he only pushed me into the lounge, let alone stage these idol drama scenes. I lowered my head and suddenly noticed the watch on the hand in the video. A luxury watch. The anniversary gift I gave Ayden was also the same luxury watch.

I stood in the shadows of the hospital, watching my wife kiss another man while my grandmother lay dying upstairs. Just minutes ago, Erlene had snapped at me over the phone, calling me a "needy child" and claiming she was stuck at a business meeting across town. Now, she was stepping out of a red Porsche in a designer dress, wrapped in the arms of Andrew Hanson, the man who was supposed to be her "sick friend." "I'm not going up," Erlene said coldly when I confronted her in the rain. "I don't like watching people die. It's depressing. Tell her I came by." She looked at my soaked, cheap hoodie and my scuffed sneakers with pure disgust before turning her back on me to return to her lover’s side. I had to go back to the ICU alone and lie to my grandmother with her final breath, telling her Erlene was waiting just outside the door. As the heart monitor flatlined at 2:14 AM, my phone buzzed with a call from my mother-in-law, who screamed that I was a "worthless loser" and demanded I sign divorce papers immediately so her daughter could finally be with a "real man." For three years, I lived as a ghost, a poor driver who endured their insults and hid my true identity just to have a simple life with the woman I loved. I sacrificed my future for a family that treated me like a stray dog, only for them to spit on me while I held my grandmother’s cold hand. Why did I stay in the shadows for so long? Why did I let these people believe they could crush me under their expensive heels? I walked out of that hospital and threw my thick, black glasses onto the wet asphalt, watching a delivery truck grind them into dust. I didn't need the disguise anymore. I drove my rusted Honda to the towering iron gates of the George Estate, where the security team dropped their batons and snapped into a terrified salute. My father was waiting on the marble steps, but I wasn't there for a peaceful reunion. I was there to reclaim my inheritance and make sure Erlene realized exactly what she had thrown away.
