My Husband Funded His Mistress With Our Marriage Money Chapter 1

The suitcase was open on the bed. Greyson stood in the bathroom, humming.

I moved through the rhythm I had moved through a hundred times before. Two folded shirts. Three ties. The charger, the leather toiletry bag, the small bottle of cologne he liked. I had been packing his bags for five years. I knew the order by heart.

His charcoal jacket was draped over the chair. I picked it up to hang it inside the garment compartment, and as I folded the lapel, I felt something crinkle.

I reached into the inside pocket.

A receipt. Wrinkled, soft at the corners, like it had been handled and shoved away in a hurry. I smoothed it open on my knee.

*Little Acorns Montessori School. Brooklyn, NY.*

My eyes traveled down the page.

*Tuition — September. Student: Tommy.*

I read the name twice.

Tommy.

I didn't know a Tommy. Not in our families, not in our friends' families, not anywhere in the careful map of names I kept in my head.

Greyson was still humming behind the bathroom door. The water ran. Steam crept under the gap.

I folded the receipt exactly the way it had been folded. I slid it back into the pocket. I hung the jacket inside the suitcase the way I always did. I zipped the compartment closed.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed and looked at my hands.

They were perfectly steady.

---

At dinner, I served the salmon he liked. Lemon, capers, the dill he pretended not to notice. I poured him a glass of the Sancerre.

"How was the office?" I asked.

"Long." He smiled. "Glad to be home."

I set my fork down. "Funny thing. I was packing your bag and I found a tuition receipt in your jacket. From a preschool in Brooklyn."

He chewed. Swallowed. Reached up and rubbed the back of his neck with his right hand.

I had noticed that gesture years ago. The first time was when he'd told me he'd been at a meeting that, as it turned out, had ended two hours earlier. I had let it pass. I had let many things pass.

"Oh, that." He laughed lightly. "Davidson from accounting. His wife asked him to drop off a check during lunch and he couldn't get out. I said I'd do it on the way back. I forgot it was even in there."

Smooth. Effortless. The lie left him the way breath leaves the body.

"That was nice of you," I said.

"That's what friends are for." He winked.

I smiled. I cut another piece of salmon.

---

I did not sleep.

Greyson lay on his side, breathing the slow, theatrical breath of a man who wanted to be believed asleep. The room was dark except for the slim band of city light pushing through the curtains.

At two in the morning, his phone lit up.

He reached for it slowly, as if not to wake me. The screen turned his face blue. His thumbs moved fast.

From my pillow, I could see the reflection of the notification banner in the framed glass on the wall above his nightstand. I had never noticed that angle before. Tonight I noticed everything.

*Tommy misses you. When are you coming home?*

I did not move. I did not blink too fast or too slow. My breathing stayed exactly where it had been.

He typed something. He smiled at the screen. Then he set the phone face down on the nightstand and rolled onto his back.

I lay there with my eyes open and watched the ceiling go from black to slate to gray.

By the time the sky turned pale, I had a list in my head. Not a feeling. A list.

---

Saturday, I told him I was meeting Claire for brunch.

"Have fun," he said, kissing my temple. "I've got that thing at the office."

"The thing on a Saturday."

"You know how the quarter is."

I smiled. "I know."

The car service I booked was not the one we used. I'd found it through a name three degrees removed from my own. The driver did not speak. I sat in the back in sunglasses and a baseball cap I had not worn since college.

Greyson took a cab. We followed him over the bridge.

Park Slope. A street of narrow brownstones with potted geraniums on the steps. The driver pulled to the curb half a block down. I lowered the window two inches.

Greyson climbed the steps of a brownstone with a blue door.

The door opened before he knocked.

She was younger than me by maybe three years. Dark hair, loose around her shoulders. A soft cardigan, bare feet. She rose up on her toes and kissed him on the mouth like she had done it ten thousand times.

My phone was already in my hand. I took the photo.

Then the small body came barreling out from behind her legs. A boy. Maybe four. Brown curls. He launched himself into Greyson's arms.

"Daddy!"

I took that photo too.

I watched them walk to the playground. The boy on Greyson's shoulders. Her hand looped through his arm. I photographed the swings. The ice cream stand. The bodega on the corner where he paid with a black credit card I had never seen in our wallet or on any statement that crossed my desk.

Thirty-seven photographs by the time I closed the car door behind me.

---

I was home an hour before he was. I changed back into the clothes I'd worn at breakfast. I made tea. I put on the radio.

When he walked in, I lifted my face for the kiss I always lifted my face for.

"How was the office?"

"Long." He sighed. "Endless calls. I'm beat."

"Poor you," I said.

I handed him a mug. He smiled at me with the easy mouth of a man who believed, completely, that he had not been seen.

I sipped my tea and watched him over the rim.
