Chapter 2

I watched him. Not with the soft eyes of a wife, but with the cold precision of a predator studying its prey. Every morning, Hayes would stand at the window of our bedroom, coffee in hand, scrolling through his phone. The man I had loved for three years, the man I had believed loved me, was a stranger. And I needed to know everything about this stranger if I was going to survive.

The first thing I noticed was his thumb. He had a specific pattern when typing passwords—three quick taps, pause, two slow ones, then a final, decisive press. I memorized it, watching the reflection of his screen in the glass, cataloging each movement like a dancer learning a new routine.

'You're up early,' he said one morning, not looking up from his phone.

I smiled, pouring myself coffee with steady hands. 'Just enjoying the view. The city looks different from up here. More... vulnerable.'

He glanced up, something flickering in his eyes. 'Vulnerable? That's not a word I'd use for Manhattan.'

'Isn't it?' I sipped my coffee, meeting his gaze. 'Even the strongest things have weaknesses. You just have to know where to look.'

He set his phone down, coming to stand behind me, his hands settling on my shoulders. I fought the urge to flinch away from his touch. 'And what weaknesses have you found, darling?'

I turned in his arms, looking up at him with practiced adoration. 'None yet. But I'm learning.'

His laugh was warm, indulgent. He thought I was playing. He had no idea I was hunting.

I began mapping his routines with scientific precision. The office door that stayed locked, the laptop that never left his sight, the encrypted emails he thought I couldn't see. Each piece of information was a weapon I stored away, waiting for the right moment.

Then came the announcement.

'We're having a guest,' Hayes said over dinner, his eyes watching my face with predatory interest. 'An old friend. She needs a place to stay while she recovers from... some difficulties.'

I set my fork down carefully. 'Oh? Who?'

'Jolie Moreno. You've heard me mention her.'

The name hit me like a physical blow, but I kept my expression neutral. Jolie Moreno. The woman he had destroyed my family for. The woman he had pretended to love me for.

'Of course,' I said, my voice smooth as silk. 'I'll have the guest suite prepared.'

His eyes narrowed slightly, searching for a crack in my composure. 'You don't mind?'

'Mind?' I laughed, the sound bright and genuine. 'Hayes, your friends are my friends. Besides, it'll be nice to have someone new to talk to.'

He reached across the table, taking my hand, his thumb stroking my knuckles in that familiar, possessive way. 'You're remarkable, you know that? So understanding.'

I smiled back, letting him see the love I used to feel, the love he thought was still there. 'That's what marriage is about, isn't it? Supporting each other?'

Later that night, I locked myself in the bathroom, the only place I knew wasn't monitored. I gripped the sink, my knuckles white, staring at my reflection until the urge to scream passed. Then I straightened, pulled out my phone, and began researching Jolie Moreno with the same clinical focus I'd applied to learning Hayes's routines.

Her social media was a masterpiece of deception—artful photos of a struggling artist, poetic captions about heartbreak and resilience, a carefully curated narrative of a woman wronged by circumstance. But I was looking for the cracks now, and I found them.

A geotag that placed her in Monaco when she was supposed to be in Paris. A hand in one photo with a distinctive ring that appeared in another, supposedly taken years apart. The subtle inconsistencies of a life built on lies.

I scrolled through her posts, each one a piece of the puzzle. She wasn't just Hayes's victim. She was a player in this game, and she'd been playing it long before I entered the picture.

The bathroom door rattled.

'Serena?' Hayes's voice, concerned. 'You've been in there a while.'

'Just a minute,' I called back, quickly closing the apps and splashing water on my face. When I opened the door, he was standing there, his expression unreadable.

'Everything okay?' he asked.

I stepped into his arms, letting him hold me, letting him believe I was still his. 'Everything's perfect,' I whispered against his chest. 'I can't wait to meet your friend.'

Over his shoulder, I smiled. The predator was becoming the prey, and neither of them had any idea what was coming.
