My Husband Drugged Me While Living With His Wife Chapter 1

The board offsite ran a week. Seven days of conference rooms in Palm Springs, seven days of stale coffee and slide decks, and the entire time I thought about my bed. My actual bed, with the six-hundred-thread sheets and the reading lamp on my side that Dario always forgot to turn off.

I wheeled my suitcase up the steps of our Queen Anne townhouse a little after six. The porch light was on. Someone had left two suitcases blocking the hallway, cheap ones, hard-shell, one with a broken wheel. I stepped around them and called out.

"Dario?"

"In here, babe." His voice came from upstairs, easy, like nothing in the world was wrong.

I climbed the stairs and stopped in the doorway of our bedroom. There was a woman sitting cross-legged on my side of the bed, wearing my burgundy La Perla set like it was pajamas, scrolling through her phone with her hair still damp from a shower. My shower. My robe was on the chair behind her.

She looked up and smiled like we were old friends. "Oh my gosh, you're home early."

I wasn't. It was exactly when I said I'd be home.

Dario came around the corner buttoning his shirt, and for a second he had the decency to look caught. Then he recovered, walked over, and put his hand on my shoulder like he was presenting a gift. "Mil, this is Camryn. My sister."

"Your sister," I repeated.

"Little sister. From back home." He said it fast, like a title, like it explained the lingerie. "She just lost her mom. She's got nowhere else to go."

Camryn's eyes went glassy on command. "I'm so sorry to just show up like this," she said, voice soft and cracking in all the right places. "Dario said family always has room."

I looked at the underwear. I looked at my husband. I said, "Welcome," because I didn't know yet what else there was to say.

That should have been the end of it. It wasn't.

By the third day, my La Mer jar sat open on the bathroom counter with a fingerprint dragged through the top, and Camryn's bare heels were pink and shining when she padded past me in the hall. "Hope that's okay," she said, not stopping. "My feet get so dry."

By the fifth day, there was a photo on her Instagram — my vanity mirror, my chandelier reflected in the corner, her face angled just right in my silk robe. Caption: *finally somewhere that feels like home 💕*

I found my grandmother's jewelry box open on the dresser that same night, the velvet trays pulled out and left crooked, like someone had tried on every piece and gotten bored halfway through putting them back.

I waited until Camryn was asleep. I kept my voice low. "Dario, she's wearing my things. She's using my face cream. She went through my grandmother's jewelry."

His jaw tightened before his voice did. "She's grieving, Milena. You want to itemize a bottle of lotion right now?"

"It's four hundred dollars, and that's not the point—"

"That's exactly the point with you." He stepped back like I'd swung at him. "You grew up with everything. You don't know what it's like to have nothing, and now you can't spare one bottle of cream for a girl who just buried her mother. You're being a snob, Mil. A real, actual snob."

I stood there with my mouth open, because somehow, in the space of one sentence, I had become the villain in my own bedroom.

I didn't win that fight. I don't think I even fought it.

The suitcases stayed. Then, one Tuesday while I was in back-to-back meetings downtown, they moved. I came home to find them fully unpacked — Camryn's clothes hanging where mine used to hang, her shampoo in my shower caddy, and my own toiletries stacked in a cardboard box on the hallway shelf like returns waiting to be shipped back.

I stood in the bedroom doorway. Dario was lying on the bed, watching a game on his phone, completely unbothered.

"Dario. Why is my toothbrush in a box in the hallway."

He didn't even sit up. "She needed the space. You've got the guest room, it's got a queen bed, it's fine."

"This is my house."

"It's our house," he said, finally looking at me, and his voice stayed level, almost gentle, which somehow made it worse. "You can sleep in the guest room until you figure out how to be a decent human being about all this."

I didn't answer him. I picked up the cardboard box myself and carried it down the hall, past the wall of family photos, past the smell of Camryn's shampoo that wasn't mine, and I set it down on the guest room floor.

That night, in a bed that wasn't mine anymore in a house I'd paid off with my own two hands, I sat against the headboard with my knees pulled up. I looked at my phone for a long time.

Then I opened the voice memo app, and for the first time in three years, I pressed record.
