Chapter 3

He came home two days later.

I heard the elevator chime, heard his uneven footsteps in the foyer — the hitch in his gait from the bandages still wrapped thick around both knees. I was in the living room with acquisition reports spread across the coffee table, a glass of Margaux beside them, reading the same paragraph for the third time because I wasn't actually reading it. I was waiting.

Cayden stopped in the doorway. I didn't look up.

"Sera."

I turned a page.

"Sera, look at me."

I did. Slowly. The way you look at something that's already been appraised and found wanting. He was still wearing the same shirt from the hospital, wrinkled now, one sleeve pushed up to the elbow. His face was drawn, stubble coming in patchy, and his eyes had that red-rimmed look of a man who hadn't slept but wanted credit for trying.

"I've been calling you," he said.

"I know."

"You didn't answer."

"No."

His jaw tightened. He shifted his weight, winced, caught himself on the doorframe. "I was in the hospital for two days, Sera. Two days. You came for five minutes and then disappeared."

I set the report down. Folded my hands. "You wanted me to stay?"

"I wanted—" He stopped. Started again. "Yeah. I wanted you to stay. I'm your husband. I got my knees shredded protecting someone from a predator, and you walked out like I'd inconvenienced you."

The word *protecting* sat in the air between us like a bill he expected me to pay.

"You didn't protect anyone," I said. "You performed."

His face went dark. "What the hell does that mean?"

"It means you turned down anesthesia so a room full of strangers would think you were tough. It means you're standing here now, limping, waiting for me to tell you how brave you were." I picked up my glass. Took a sip. "I'm not going to do that."

"Jesus Christ, Sera." His voice was rising now, filling the space the way it used to, trying to crowd me into a corner with volume. "I took a beating for someone who couldn't defend herself. I got on my knees for her. You know what that cost me? You know what it—"

"For her," I said.

He stopped.

"You got on your knees for her," I repeated. "Not for me. Not for us. For Oakley Cooper."

"She needed help."

"And you needed to be the one to give it."

His hands curled into fists at his sides. "What the hell is wrong with you? Where's the woman I married? The one who—"

"The woman you married," I said, setting the glass down with a soft click, "married a man who told five armed enforcers to kill him rather than kneel. That man doesn't exist anymore. So we're even."

Something in him snapped. He shoved off the doorframe, limped three steps into the room, and his voice came out raw and loud and shaking. "You don't get to sit there and judge me like I'm some— like I'm nothing! I bled for someone who mattered, and you act like I betrayed you? Like I—"

I gave the smallest nod.

Marcus stepped out from the hallway. Another man — Briggs, I think his name is, I don't usually bother learning them — came from the kitchen. Cayden didn't even see them until they were on him.

It happened fast. Professionally. Marcus caught his right arm, twisted it behind his back, and drove him forward. Briggs took the left. Cayden's knees hit the marble with a sound like a mallet on meat, and he screamed — not in fear, in rage, in the howl of a man who cannot believe what is happening to his body.

He thrashed. Hard. Tried to wrench his arms free, tried to get his legs under him, tried to summon whatever was left of the man who used to win fights in alleys. Marcus adjusted his grip. Briggs pressed a knee into Cayden's spine. And just like that, he was flat on the floor, chest to stone, face turned sideways, breath coming in ragged gasps.

"Get off me," he snarled. "Get the fuck off—"

I stood. Walked over. Crouched down beside him.

On the screen across the room, the footage was already playing. I'd had it queued since this morning. Cayden on his knees in the Tribeca lounge. Victor's shoe grinding glass into his kneecap. Cayden's mouth forming the words *forgive the debt.* The wet dark spreading across expensive slacks.

I reached down and took his jaw in my hand. Not gently. I turned his face toward the screen and held it there.

"Watch," I said.

He tried to twist away. I tightened my grip.

"Watch."

His eyes found the screen. I watched them go wide, then wild, then something worse — empty. Like he was seeing himself for the first time and couldn't reconcile the image with the story he'd been telling.

The footage looped. Kneeling. Begging. Bleeding.

I leaned in close, so my mouth was an inch from his ear, and said one word.

"Dog."

I let it sit. Five seconds. Long enough for him to understand that I meant it. Long enough for the word to burn itself into whatever was left of his pride.

Then I let go of his face, stood, and walked to the bedroom.

Behind me, I heard him start to scream — wordless, guttural, the sound of something breaking that can't be fixed. I heard Marcus and Briggs hold him down through it. I heard furniture scrape. Glass shatter. Something heavy hit the wall.

I closed the door.

Poured myself another glass.

And felt nothing at all.
