Chapter 4

For four days, Cayden lived in my apartment like something under quarantine.

I didn't have to work at ignoring him. It came naturally, the way not noticing a stain on the wall becomes natural once you've decided you're not going to look at it. He sat across from me at breakfast and I read the Journal. He said good morning and I turned a page. He asked once, on the second day, if I'd slept okay, and I answered a text message instead of him.

He stopped trying to talk after that. Mostly.

On the fifth night, I was at my desk in the study, going through a term sheet for a logistics acquisition, when I heard his footsteps in the hall — slower than they used to be, still favoring the left knee. I didn't look up. I've gotten very good at not looking up.

"Sera."

I finished the paragraph I was on.

"Sera, can we talk."

I set the pen down, because he wasn't going to leave, and looking at him was faster than listening to him hover. He was standing in the doorway with his shoulders rounded forward, head tilted down at an angle I'd never seen on him before. Cayden Moreno did not stand like that. Not before. Something about the posture made my skin prickle, the way a wrong note in a song does.

"I've been thinking," he said. His voice was quiet. Careful. "About what happened. About what I did to us."

I said nothing.

"I want to be better," he said. "I know I can't undo it. I'm not asking you to forget it. I'm just asking — give me a chance to show you I can change. I'll listen. I'll do whatever you need. I just—"

He crossed the room. Reached out. His fingers landed on the back of my hand, warm, and for one unguarded second I felt the old instinct — the one built from three years of marriage, the muscle memory of letting him touch me.

I pulled my hand away like it had been burned.

"Don't touch me," I said.

He froze, his hand still hovering in the air between us.

"You're contaminated," I said.

I watched the word land. Watched something behind his eyes go out, quietly, like a pilot light. He didn't say anything else. I stood, walked past him to the bar cart, and poured myself a glass of the Margaux. I drank it standing at the window, looking at the city instead of at him, and I never once turned around to see his face. I didn't need to know what it looked like. I already knew.

He left the room a few minutes later. I heard the guest bedroom door close down the hall — he'd been sleeping there since the marble floor — and I finished my glass alone, and felt exactly as much as I intended to feel, which was nothing.

---

Oakley Cooper came to my office two days later, and I could tell from the way she walked in that Cayden had called her. Warned her. Told her something was wrong, without telling her what.

She was smaller than I expected. Not physically — she was tall enough, pretty in an unthreatening way, the kind of pretty that photographs well in soft light. But she moved like she was trying to take up less space than she occupied, shoulders in, chin down, and she sat across my desk with her knees pressed together and her hands folded so tightly her knuckles had gone pale.

"Ms. Hart," she said. "I don't — I don't really know why I'm here."

"Yes you do."

Her eyes flicked up, then away. She was wearing a thin gold bracelet, and her fingers found it almost immediately, turning it around her wrist in small nervous circles.

"If this is about Cayden—"

"It's about Cayden."

Her chin came up then, some borrowed courage finding its way into her spine. "What we have isn't what you think it is," she said. Her voice shook, but she kept going, the way people do when they've rehearsed something in a mirror. "I know how this looks. I know what people say about girls like me. But I love him. Not — not for anything. Not for money, or status, or any of the things I'm sure matter to someone like you."

I didn't answer. I let her keep going. She mistook my silence for an opening.

"You've never had to earn anyone's love, Ms. Hart," she said, and there was something almost pitying in it now, some conviction of her own moral high ground. "You buy things. You buy people. But what Cayden and I have — you can't put a price on that. It's real. It's the realest thing either of us has ever had." Her thumb kept turning the bracelet, around and around, a small anxious wheel. "I know you're used to controlling everything. I know that's probably very hard to sit with — that there's something you can't touch, can't buy, can't own. But you can't. This is ours. It doesn't belong to your money."

She stopped, breathing a little unsteady, waiting — I think — for me to flinch.

I reached into my desk drawer instead.
