No one mentioned it. Why would they? The ward doesn't stop for birthdays. I checked my phone during a two-minute break by the nurses' station. One notification. A calendar reminder. The kind that auto-generates and fires without anyone having to think about it. Tristan had set it three years ago, back when we still did things like set reminders for each other. Three seconds.

Chapter 5

The garage was quiet at that hour.

Not peaceful quiet—concrete quiet. The kind that swallows sound and gives it back to you slightly wrong, slightly too close. My footsteps bounced off the low ceiling, off the support pillars, off the rows of empty cars sitting dark and still under the fluorescent strips.

I had my badge in one hand and my keys in the other. Force of habit. Years of late nights in parking structures teach you to have your keys ready.

I heard them before I saw anyone. A second set of footsteps. Then a third.

I stopped.

Paulina Perez stepped out from behind the pillar to my left. She wasn't in a hospital gown. She was dressed—coat, heels, bag on her arm—like a woman who had come from somewhere and was going somewhere and had scheduled a brief stop in between. She looked at me the way you look at a mildly inconvenient errand. Calm. Almost bored.

Three men fanned out behind her. They didn't look at my face.

They looked at my hands.

'Some women,' Paulina said, conversationally, 'need to learn what happens when they don't know their place.'

I opened my mouth. I don't know what I was going to say. It didn't matter.

They moved before I could finish the thought.

I know what compound fractures sound like now.

I knew before—theoretically, clinically—what happens when force meets bone at the wrong angle with enough weight behind it. I had seen the X-rays. I had reviewed the imaging. I had counseled patients through the treatment plans.

I did not know the sound. Not from the inside.

It is not a crack. It is something flatter than that, and deeper, and it arrives a half-second before the pain so that your brain has time to register what it's hearing before the signal catches up. Both hands. My wrists. My fingers. They were methodical about it—not frenzied, not angry, just precise. Like they had been told exactly what to do and exactly where to do it.

I screamed once. One raw, involuntary sound pulled up from somewhere below thought. Then I tried to fold my arms in, to pull them against my body, to protect what was left—

There were three of them.

Above me, in the corner where the pillar met the ceiling, a security camera held its red light steady. Recording everything in high definition. I remember looking up at it once, from the floor, before my vision went white at the edges.

The camera watched.

No one else came.

She was small. Eight years old, maybe nine.

I heard the stairwell door slam open—metal against concrete, that specific sound—and then there were small footsteps running, fast and uneven, the footsteps of someone whose legs weren't quite long enough for the pace she was setting.

She had no reason to be in this garage. She had no reason to be anywhere near me. She was here because her mother was upstairs receiving treatment, and she must have been in the stairwell, and she must have heard me scream.

She threw herself over my body.

All of her—this small, slight, entirely unreasonable child—placed herself between me and the men who were still standing there, and she screamed. Not one scream. Continuously. With her whole chest, with everything she had, the way children scream when they haven't yet learned to calculate the cost of making noise. She screamed and she screamed until the sound filled every inch of that concrete space and climbed the walls and found the ceiling and came back down, and she did not stop until I heard the security guard's radio crackling from somewhere up the ramp.

The men left. I never saw their faces properly.

Paulina left too. Unhurried.

The child stayed.

She was shaking—I could feel it through the pressure of her small hands on my shoulder—but she didn't move. She held on and kept making noise until help arrived, and when the security guard dropped to his knees beside us and said *Jesus, Jesus* in a low breathless voice, she finally stopped screaming.

I looked up at her. She looked down at me. Her eyes were enormous and wet and completely unafraid.

I couldn't speak. My hands were—I couldn't look at my hands.

She held on anyway.

Seven calls.

I found out later. The hospital switchboard had seven calls logged to Tristan Bennett's cell between 9:41 PM and 10:08 PM.

He silenced the first two.

The remaining five went to voicemail.

He was at a restaurant in Midtown. Candlelit, the kind of place with a good wine list and tables spaced far enough apart that your conversations stay private. Angelica had texted him at seven-thirty—*feeling really anxious tonight, I need to see you*—and he had rearranged his evening around that sentence.

I know this because he told me, later, when telling me felt like damage control. He said it without understanding what he was saying. He said: *She needed me, I couldn't just—* and then he saw my face and stopped.

While the compound fractures in my hands were being documented by a trauma attending. While a child who didn't know my name was answering security's questions in a shaking voice. While the bones that had held a scalpel steady for ten years were being imaged and assessed and spoken about in the careful, precise language of things that are broken and may not fully heal—

He poured her wine.

He reached across the table and held her hand.

He told her everything would be fine.

I lay on the trauma bay gurney and stared at the ceiling and listened to the attending tell me what I already knew, and I felt something happen in my chest. Not dramatic. Not loud. The way a structure fails when the last load-bearing element gives—quietly, completely, and all at once.

My hands were wrapped and immobilized and entirely out of my control.

For the first time in ten years, I had nothing left to press together.
