Chapter 2

On Monday morning, I walked into the office at eight sharp.

My fever was gone. The haze in my head had cleared, leaving behind a cold, sharp edge. For seven years, I had walked through these glass doors with my head down, worrying about payroll and late vendor payments.

Now, I kept my head up. I watched everything.

At eight-thirty, the front elevator chimed. Sylvie Baker stepped out.

She looked radiant. A plaid Burberry scarf was draped casually over her shoulders. Her boots were black Stuart Weitzman leather, clicking softly against the polished concrete floor. She hung her coat on the rack and smoothed her silk blouse.

A few minutes later, she sat behind the reception desk and opened her phone. I stood near the breakroom, holding a paper cup of water, and watched her.

Sylvie scrolled through DoorDash. Without a second thought, she pulled the silver company credit card from her designer handbag and entered the numbers. A thirty-dollar breakfast bowl and an iced matcha latte. Billed straight to the firm.

Dana Reeves, our junior analyst, walked by to grab a file.

Sylvie called out to her. “Dana! Look at this.”

Sylvie tilted her chin up. A delicate crystal pendant caught the ceiling light. It was Swarovski, shaped like a tiny swan.

“Pretty, right?” Sylvie giggled. Her voice was sweet and light. “Griffin picked it up for me on his way back from Chicago. He said the blue matched my eyes. Just because.”

Dana smiled, but her eyes darted nervously toward my office door. “It’s... very nice, Sylvie.”

“He is just so thoughtful,” Sylvie sighed, touching the crystal with manicured nails. “A real gentleman.”

I didn't flinch. My heart didn't race.

I set my water cup in the trash, walked into my corner office, and shut the door.

I sat down at my desk and pulled up a fresh spreadsheet.

I worked for four hours straight without looking up. I dug through twelve months of expense archives. I pulled every receipt, every reimbursement request, and every petty cash voucher Sylvie had ever filed under "Administrative Support" and "Client Relations."

The numbers told a brutal story.

Over the last year, Sylvie had billed $28,450 in fraudulent expenses.

There were dinners at five-star Italian restaurants on Friday nights. Weekend blowouts at luxury hair salons in SoHo. Spa days in Midtown. Griffin had signed off on every single one with a green checkmark.

Every dollar she spent was a dollar Griffin had squeezed out of me.

That night, I went home to our quiet, drafty apartment. I walked into the bedroom and opened my closet.

I stood there and counted what seven years of marriage had earned me.

On the left hung four misprinted company t-shirts. The logo had been spelled wrong in our second year. Griffin had brought the box home and told me, *“Don’t throw them away. You can sleep in them. It saves money on pajamas.”*

Next to them were two pairs of faded jeans I had owned since college.

On the hook hung a bulky grey winter coat with frayed cuffs. I had bought it six years ago off a clearance rack for forty-five dollars. Last winter, when the zipper broke, Griffin had told me to use safety pins because we needed to keep our operational costs low.

I touched the rough fabric of the sleeve.

Sylvie wore cashmere paid for by my sweat. I wore garbage.

I closed the closet door. I didn't cry.

The next morning was Tuesday. I arrived at the office at eight-fifteen.

I sat at my computer and logged into the corporate banking portal.

First, I pulled up Sylvie’s latest reimbursement form. It was a receipt for $4,800 from Bloomingdale’s, submitted two days before the Orlando trip. She had labeled it: *Client Appreciation Gift Packages.*

I clicked the red button on my screen.

*REJECTED.*

In the memo box, I typed: *Insufficient documentation. Unauthorized personal retail expenditure.*

Next, I opened the corporate card management dashboard. Sylvie’s card was listed under the reception pool. I highlighted her name, clicked the settings menu, and hit *Deactivate Card.*

The status flipped from green to grey. Cancelled.

At eight-fifty, I drafted an email to the entire company.

The subject line was simple: *Updated Compliance Policy: Travel, Entertainment, and Expense Reporting.*

I kept the tone completely dry and professional. I quoted the company handbook. I explicitly stated that, moving forward, the finance department would no longer reimburse food delivery services, beauty services, or retail purchases without prior written approval from the CFO.

I cited the exact categories Sylvie used every week, without ever typing her name.

At 9:00 AM, I hit *Send to All.*

An hour later, I stepped out of my office to grab my mid-morning tea.

Down in the lobby, the artisanal coffee shop was packed with people from our floor. Through the glass railing, I watched Sylvie stand in line. She was laughing, chatting with one of the sales reps.

When she reached the counter, she ordered her usual large iced vanilla latte and an almond croissant.

She pulled out the silver corporate card and tapped it against the payment terminal.

A sharp beep cut through the chatter.

The screen flashed bright red.

*CARD DECLINED.*

Sylvie frowned. She tapped it again.

Another beep. Another red flash.

The barista looked up, his voice carrying over the crowd. “Sorry, miss. It didn’t go through. Do you have another way to pay?”

Sylvie’s face turned bright crimson. She fumbled with her purse, her hands shaking, as people behind her began to stare.

Up on the mezzanine, I took a slow sip of my tea. It was warm, and it tasted good.
