Chapter 3

Ten minutes later, my office door swung open. It hit the drywall with a sharp bang.

Sylvie marched in. Her cheeks were bright red. The Burberry scarf was slightly crooked around her neck. She didn't bother knocking. She slammed both palms down on my desk and leaned forward.

“Did you cancel my corporate card?” she hissed.

I didn't flinch. I kept my pen resting between two fingers and looked up. “Good morning, Sylvie. Please close the door.”

“Don’t play dumb with me, Etta,” she snapped. Her voice shook with rage, but her eyes held a nasty glint. She thought she owned the place. “My card just got declined downstairs in front of ten people. You rejected my Bloomingdale’s invoice, too. Is this a joke? Because it feels like a personal attack.”

I leaned back in my chair. My voice was low and steady. It was the same tone I used when explaining basic math to interns.

“It’s not personal,” I said. “It’s company policy. You received the memo thirty minutes ago.”

“I’m Griffin’s executive support,” she said, her chin lifting. She lingered on Griffin’s name like a threat. “I buy things for clients. I buy things he asks me to buy.”

“Then Griffin can submit an itemized purchase order through the proper channels,” I replied. “The company handbook is clear. We do not reimburse personal clothing, spa appointments, or daily lunches. That applies to everyone.”

Sylvie’s nostrils flared. “You’re doing this because of who I am.”

I met her gaze and held it. “I’m doing this because I am the Chief Financial Officer. Company rules apply to every employee, regardless of their personal relationship with management.”

She went dead still. The color drained from her lips, then rushed back twice as hot.

“If you have a problem with compliance,” I added smoothly, “you are welcome to file a formal complaint with HR.”

Sylvie opened her mouth, but nothing came out. She bit her lip so hard I thought it might bleed. She turned on her heel, her designer boots stomping against the floor, and slammed the door behind her.

I looked down at my spreadsheet and went back to work.

That night, Griffin called at seven o'clock.

I was at the kitchen table, chewing on a piece of toasted whole-wheat bread. I hit speakerphone and set the phone down.

“Have you lost your mind?” His voice exploded through the room.

I swallowed the dry toast. “Good evening, Griffin.”

“Don’t give me that calm corporate act!” he roared. “Sylvie was in tears today. In tears! She told me you humiliated her. You cut her card and threw company policy in her face. Who do you think you are?”

“I think I’m the CFO,” I said simply. “I manage the burn rate. Isn’t that what you told me on Saturday when I turned on the heater? Every dollar matters.”

“That’s different!” he shouted. “She’s the face of our front office. She entertains clients! She represents this firm!”

“Then send me an authorization form,” I said.

The line went quiet for a beat.

“What?” he growled.

“Write a memo,” I told him, keeping my voice flat. “State that you are overriding financial controls to give the receptionist an unlimited personal expense budget. Sign your name at the bottom. Date it. Put it on the company record, and I will reinstate her card tonight.”

The silence stretched on the other end.

Griffin wasn't stupid. He was arrogant, but he knew the law. A signed memo approving company funds for a mistress’s wardrobe was an open confession of embezzlement.

“You’re being petty, Etta,” he finally spat. “You’re letting your insecurities ruin the business.”

“Sign it, Griffin,” I said. “Or the card stays dead.”

He slammed the phone down. The call cut off with a click.

He didn't send a memo. He never put anything in writing.

By Sunday evening, Griffin changed his tactic.

It was an old routine. Whenever he pushed me too far, he staged a quick retreat. He called it "reconnecting."

The front door clicked open at six. Griffin walked into the apartment wearing a tailored navy blazer and clean white shirt. He held a bunch of pink carnations wrapped in cheap plastic.

“Hey, babe,” he said softly. He had his boyish, sheepish smile on. “Look what I got you.”

I looked at the limp flowers. He had bought them from the corner deli for ten dollars.

“Thank you,” I said, placing them on the counter.

“You’ve been working too hard,” he said, stepping close and putting his hands on my shoulders. His touch made my skin crawl, but I didn't pull away. “I know I was stressed earlier this week. The Chicago meetings were brutal. I was short with you, and I’m sorry. Let me make it up to you. I booked a table at Trattoria Bella.”

It was a mid-range Italian place down the street. Loud, dim, and inexpensive. It was where he always took me when he wanted to fix things without spending real money.

“Okay,” I said. “Let me grab my coat.”

Twenty minutes later, we sat across from each other in a small wooden booth. The air smelled of garlic and cheap tomato sauce. Griffin ordered a carafe of house red wine and poured a glass for himself.

He reached across the table and took my hand. His fingers were warm.

“You know you’re the backbone of this company, right?” he said, looking straight into my eyes. His voice was full of manufactured sincerity. “I couldn't do any of this without you, Etta. We’ve built something amazing from nothing. Sometimes I get lost in the pressure, but it’s always been you and me. We’re a team.”

I looked at him. I saw the neat haircut Sylvie probably complimented. I saw the confidence of a man who believed his wife was a loyal, predictable pet.

I smiled. It was a small, quiet smile. Just the right amount of warmth.

“I know, Griffin,” I said.

The waiter came by with a basket of bread. “Ready to order?”

“I’ll have the grilled salmon,” I said clearly. “And a sparkling water with lemon.”

“A great choice,” Griffin told the waiter, beaming. He was relieved. He thought the storm had passed. He thought ten-dollar flowers and some cheap pasta had bought him another year of my silence.

I picked up my fork. The fish was warm and flaky.

As I chewed, I thought about the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars sitting safely in a trust account in Queens. I thought about the cloud drive filled with his fraud receipts.

Griffin kept talking about his expansion plans, smiling across the table.

I took a slow sip of water. I said nothing that mattered.
