Chapter 3

On Monday afternoon, I met Julien for lunch at a corner bistro in the West Village. Rain tapped softly against the green awning. Julien didn't touch his steak. He slid a thick gray folder across the small table.

"The tabloids are running wild, Claire," he said. His voice was quiet and hard. "I've been auditing the shared accounts. The Stephens firm holds forty percent of Grant Enterprises' commercial paper."

I looked at the neat, organized numbers. My father had trusted Killian. Julien never did.

"Say the word and I pull everything," Julien said, leaning closer. "Every contract, every shared account, every partnership. Say the word, Claire."

I stared down at the condensation on my water glass. A big part of me wanted to say yes. To burn the whole bridge right now.

"Not yet," I said. "I need to understand what's really happening first."

Julien set down his fork. He studied my face for five long seconds. He didn't argue. He just gave one sharp nod.

"Fine," he said.

When he walked out to his car, he pulled out his phone. I watched through the window as he gave crisp orders to his assistant. He was already preparing restraining orders and putting forensic accountants on standby. Just in case.

The next morning, Amoura sat across from me at breakfast. She wore an oversized cream sweater and smiled like an angel.

"Claire," she said sweetly, setting down her teacup. "I know we got off on the wrong foot. Let me take you shopping on Fifth Avenue today. My treat. An olive branch?"

I knew she was playing a game. But if I refused, Victoria would tell Killian I was cruel and ungrateful.

"Sure," I said. "Let's go."

We spent two hours walking through luxury boutiques. Amoura acted bubbly, trying on silk scarves and asking my opinion on shoes. Around three in the afternoon, we walked down to the parking garage off 57th Street. The concrete basement was dim and drafty.

My phone buzzed in my purse. It was Julien.

"Take it," Amoura said with a bright smile. "I'll go unlock the car."

I stepped twenty feet away toward the stairwell and answered. "Julien?"

Before he could speak, a shrill scream tore through the garage.

Tires screeched on the smooth floor. A dark van blocked my view of our SUV. Two men in dark hoodies grabbed Amoura by the arms. She shrieked, kicking wildly, throwing herself hard against a concrete pillar.

"Help! Claire, help me!" she screamed.

I ran forward. "Hey! Let her go!"

The van's side door slammed shut, but the men didn't drag her inside. They shoved her violently to the floor, jumped into the front seats, and sped away, tires smoking.

Amoura lay curled on the damp concrete. Her knees were scraped, and red bruises were already blooming on her pale wrists.

The police arrived in six minutes.

Amoura sat on the bumper of an ambulance, wrapped in a shock blanket. She was trembling from head to toe. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Even the two young officers looked deeply moved by her distress.

Then she pointed a shaking finger straight at me.

"It was her," Amoura sobbed. Her voice cracked with absolute terror. "She hired them! She set the whole thing up!"

I froze. "What are you talking about?"

"She warned me this morning," Amoura wept, clinging to a paramedic's sleeve. "She told me I ruined her marriage! Look at my phone! Look what she sent me!"

The lead officer stepped forward and took her phone.

There were three text messages from my personal number. *Leave town or you won't walk out of that garage today.*

Then the officer pressed play on a voicemail from a blocked caller. My own voice crackled through the small speaker. It was flat and cold: *You took my husband, Amoura. I'm going to eliminate you.*

It was a fake. A voice clone made from gala speeches and phone calls.

"Mrs. Grant," the lead detective said, stepping in front of me. "You need to come with us to the precinct."

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

"I'm happy to cooperate," I said calmly. "Call my attorney."

They took me to the Midtown North precinct. I sat in a small interrogation room with two detectives under harsh fluorescent lights. They asked about the van. They asked about the texts. Then they showed me security camera stills from the garage.

The footage had been doctored. The men and the van were missing from the frames. The tape just showed Amoura falling, and me walking toward her with a cold look on my face.

The trap was airtight.

I answered every question with a steady, quiet voice. Amoura had planned this down to the minute.

Three long hours passed. The metal chair dug into my spine.

Finally, the door swung open.

Julien walked in, flanked by three senior partners from his firm. He carried a heavy leather briefcase, his eyes like flint.

Within twenty minutes, Julien tore through their paperwork, delayed the preliminary charges, and walked me out into the hallway.

I looked down the long, empty corridor.

The plastic waiting chairs were bare.

Killian wasn't there. He hadn't called. He hadn't come.
