Chapter 4

Julien offered to walk me inside. I told him no. I needed to see Killian's face myself.

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind me. The foyer was vast, drafty, and dead quiet.

Killian was standing near the bottom of the grand staircase. His suit jacket was off. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his sleeves were rolled up to his forearms. His arms were crossed tightly over his chest. The bruised knuckles from his bar fight were swollen and purple.

He didn't ask if I was hungry. He didn't ask what happened in the police precinct. He didn't even ask how I was doing.

Instead, his jaw tightened.

"My mother wants you to stay away from Amoura for the foreseeable future," he said. His voice was clipped and cold.

I stopped five feet away from him. The chill of the polished marble floor seeped straight through the thin soles of my flats.

"I was locked in an interrogation room for three hours, Killian," I said.

"I know where you were."

"The garage footage was edited. The text messages and the voicemails were faked."

"I don't know what happened today, Claire," he cut in. He stepped closer, his tall shadow falling over me. "But this has to stop. Amoura is terrified of you. She is upstairs right now, trembling under three blankets."

I stared at him. I looked into his dark, guarded eyes, searching for a single trace of the boy who had built homes with me in the Appalachian mountains. I looked for the man I had loved and waited on for three long years.

There was nothing. Only a cold stone wall.

"Did you even consider, for one second, that she might be lying?" I asked. My voice was very quiet.

Killian's expression tightened. A small muscle jumped along his jawline.

"She has no reason to," he said.

He turned his back on me and walked up the stairs.

His heavy footsteps echoed off the high ceiling, then faded down the corridor toward the east wing. Toward Amoura.

I stood alone in the center of the foyer.

Usually, an ache would tear through my ribs right about now. My throat would burn, and the tears would spill over. I had spent years crying in quiet corners, swallowing my pride, telling myself that patience was love.

Not tonight.

My eyes stayed completely dry. The grief inside my chest didn't spill out. Instead, it sank deep into my gut and froze solid. It turned into something hard. Something sharp and dangerous.

I looked down at the white marble beneath my feet. This was where Victoria expected me to bend.

I wasn't going to bend anymore.

***

Around midnight, the mansion went still.

I sat on the edge of the mattress in the guest room and dialed a private number Julien had slipped into my coat pocket earlier.

"Webb," a deep, raspy voice answered after two rings.

"Marcus Webb? This is Claire Stephens."

"Mrs. Grant," he said smoothly.

"Just Claire," I replied. "We need to meet. Tonight."

An hour later, I slipped into a cracked red vinyl booth at a twenty-four-hour diner on Eighth Avenue. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. The air smelled of burnt coffee and grease.

Marcus Webb sat across from me. He was a broad man in his fifties with tired gray eyes and a worn trench coat. He looked like an accountant who carried too many dangerous secrets.

"Your brother said you'd reach out eventually," Marcus said. He set a scuffed leather briefcase on the seat beside him.

"Julien said you're the best private investigator in Manhattan," I said, wrapping both hands around a warm mug of black coffee.

Marcus let out a dry, quiet chuckle. "I'm good at finding things people want buried. But here's the funny part, Claire. You didn't need Julien to find me."

I paused. "What do you mean?"

Marcus reached into his coat pocket and placed a small silver flash drive on the table.

"I was already on the Grant family payroll," Marcus said, tapping the metal drive. "Killian hired me himself. Two full years before you two got married."

My pulse skipped a beat. "Killian hired you? Why?"

"To dig into Victoria's past." Marcus leaned across the table, his voice dropping low. "Killian suspected his mother was hiding something big. So I spent sixteen months digging. I tracked down old medical records from a private clinic in Paris. I pulled banking logs and offshore wire transfers from thirty years ago."

"What did you find, Marcus?"

Marcus looked at me with quiet sympathy.

"Victoria didn't adopt Amoura out of kindness," Marcus said. "Amoura is Victoria's biological daughter. She was born from a secret affair in France. Victoria shipped her off to foster homes to protect the pristine Grant name. She only brought Amoura back because the girl hired her own investigator and started sniffing around."

The air left my chest in one sharp breath.

Amoura wasn't an orphan. She wasn't an adopted sister.

She was Victoria's secret child. Killian's half-sister.

"I compiled everything," Marcus continued. "DNA test results. French clinic admission sheets. Birth paperwork. Wire transfers showing monthly hush money. I put it all in a secure digital archive and handed Killian the access codes."

"When?" I whispered.

"One week before your wedding," Marcus said. "I told him he had the ammunition to break his mother's hold on him for good. To clear the board before he brought a wife into that den."

Marcus shook his head.

"Killian never touched the file. He locked it away. He was terrified of the public fallout. He chose to live the lie."

I stared down at the small silver drive.

Killian had known everything. He had known the rot inside his house. He had known Amoura was a weapon his mother kept hidden. And instead of trusting me with the truth, he stayed silent. He let them humiliate me. He let them drag me to a police precinct.

He called his silence protection. It was nothing but pure cowardice.

The final trace of love in my chest turned to dust.

"Transfer everything to me," I said. My voice was steady and clear.

Marcus watched me for three long seconds. Then, he slid the silver flash drive across the table until it touched my coffee cup.

"It's already yours," Marcus said quietly. "Every document. Every test result. It's all verified."

I picked up the cool metal and closed my fist tight around it.

"Thank you, Marcus."

"What are you going to do with it?" he asked.

I looked through the diner window into the dark New York streets.

"I'm going to finish what Killian was too weak to start."
