Chapter 2

By Friday morning, the internet decided I was a monster.

It started with three burner accounts. They showed up on Instagram, TikTok, and X within hours of each other. They posted blurry photos of me from the Grant Foundation gala. In one clip, someone zoomed in on my tired eyes and the dark circles beneath them.

The caption read: *Ice queen counting her husband’s money.*

Another account posted a photo of my vintage emerald ring. *She trapped him with pity. Everyone knows he belongs with someone softer.*

Then came the masterstroke.

At midnight, Amoura posted a clip from *A Walk to Remember* on her personal account. It was the scene where the dying girl talks about love and destiny. Underneath, Amoura wrote: *Some of us were never given a family to call our own. We just watch from the cold.*

She posted it three minutes after the gala photos hit society pages.

By dawn, her post had over two hundred thousand likes. The comment section was a mob.

*Protect this girl at all costs,* one user wrote.

*The CEO’s wife looks evil,* wrote another, tagging my name directly. *Look at how she glares at Amoura.*

I walked past the kitchen around seven. Killian was leaning against the marble counter, his phone pressed to his ear. His voice was softer than I had ever heard it.

"Amoura? Did you sleep at all? I saw the clip... Don't read the comments, sweetheart. I'm right here. No one will hurt you."

He didn't notice me standing in the doorway. He didn't even turn around.

I walked into my study. I opened my laptop, took twenty-six screenshots, and printed them out.

The burner accounts used phrases only spoken inside our home. One post mentioned the exact brand of chamomile tea I drink before bed. Another mentioned the color of the paint in the master bedroom.

I gathered the pages into a neat black folder and walked into Killian’s home office.

He was sitting at his mahogany desk, rubbing his knuckles. He looked up, his brow creasing.

"I'm busy, Claire. Board meeting in an hour."

I set the folder directly in front of him.

"Look at this," I said. My voice was level. "Three burner accounts have been posting about me. Here are the timestamps. Every single one was posted from our home Wi-Fi network. Look at the text. They mention private details about this house."

Killian glanced down. He flipped two pages. He didn't read the text. He barely looked at the IP logs.

His jaw tightened. He closed the folder with a dry thud and slid it back toward me.

"This is circumstantial," he said.

"Circumstantial? Killian, she lives under our roof. She’s smearing me online."

"You're looking for reasons to dislike her," he cut in. His eyes went hard and cold. "You're threatened by her because she needs help. Amoura has been through enough trauma to last three lifetimes. Don't do this, Claire."

"Don't do what? Defend myself?"

Before he could answer, his phone buzzed on the blotter. Amoura's name flashed across the screen.

Killian didn't hesitate. He grabbed the phone, stood up, and brushed past me without another word.

"Hey," he said into the receiver as he stepped into the hall. "I'm coming upstairs now."

I sat in the heavy leather chair across from his empty desk. The clock on the wall ticked once, twice, three times. I picked up my folder, tucked it under my arm, and walked out.

By afternoon, the erasure began.

Maria, our head housekeeper, came to me with eyes fixed on the floor.

"Mrs. Grant told us to take meal planning to Miss Porter now," Maria whispered. "And the florist invoices, too."

"I see," I said. "Thank you for telling me, Maria."

That evening, Victoria hosted a private dinner in the formal dining room for Grant Enterprises associates. Twelve people sat around the long mahogany table. Silverware gleamed under the crystal chandelier.

When Victoria introduced the table, she pointed to Killian, then to Amoura, who wore a modest white lace dress.

"And this is Killian's... wife," Victoria said.

She paused just before the word *wife*. It was barely half a second, but everyone heard it. She made the title sound temporary.

Victoria seated Amoura at the family end, right beside Killian. She placed me at the far corner, next to an entry-level analyst from a partner firm.

Halfway through the second course, the conversation turned to commercial real estate trends in Midtown. It was an area I understood intimately. I had worked on three acquisitions with my brother Julien last year.

"The capitalization rates are shifting downtown," I said calmly, addressing the analyst and the senior partner across from him. "The zoning updates in Tribeca give local developers a distinct advantage—"

Victoria’s fork touched her porcelain plate with a sharp ring.

"How resourceful of you, dear," Victoria interrupted smoothly. Her smile was like ice water. "To manage so well without proper breeding."

A few guests offered tight, nervous chuckles. The senior partner stared at his napkin. Amoura took a slow sip of water, her eyes gleaming over the rim of the glass.

My hands rested flat on the white tablecloth. Not a single finger trembled.

I didn't look at Victoria. I didn't look at Killian, who kept his gaze fixed on his wine.

"As I was saying," I continued, looking right into the partner's eyes, "the Tribeca zoning creates a three-percent yield gap for long-term holders."

The partner blinked, then cleared his throat. "Right. Yes. A three-percent gap."

Across the table, Victoria’s smile vanished completely.
