My Husband Chose His Secretary Over Me

Elaine Austin rummaged through the safe, pulling out the postnuptial agreement Jeffrey Jackson had signed years ago. She turned the pages slowly, her fingertips tracing the elaborate flourish of his signature.

She could still picture the day he handed it to her. Despite his obvious reluctance, he'd put on a show of selfless generosity. "Honey, our relationship will always be your call. If you ever get tired of me, you're free to walk away, no strings attached."

"And what if you stop loving me?" she'd asked.

Jeffrey had looked genuinely offended, as if the idea was unthinkable. But seeing the serious look on Elaine's face—one that truly wanted an answer—he raised an eyebrow and replied with absolute confidence, "If I ever betray you, I'll sign away my claim to our joint assets and let you walk away clean."

He paused, then added, "And if that day ever comes, Elaine, don't hesitate to walk away. Because even I wouldn't be able to forgive myself."

Elaine blinked back the tears that came unbidden and added her signature. Once filed with the court as the basis of their settlement, the agreement would sever every financial tie between her and Jeffrey.

Suddenly, a commotion broke out at the door. Elaine instinctively shoved the signed agreement under a pile of unrelated papers. The last thing she needed was for Jeffrey to walk in and catch her in the act—but that's exactly what happened.

Jeffrey's face went cold. He closed the distance in seconds, his grip locking around her wrist. His voice came out razor-sharp, barely containing his fury. "It was you, wasn't it? Didn't I tell you to stay out of it?"

Elaine met his gaze. "What drama are you pulling now?"

"Someone sent an email to every employee—intimate photos of Lilian and me—claiming she's wrecking our family. Did you have someone dig into my life?" Jeffrey's grip tightened, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"I did look into your life, I'll admit that," Elaine shot back, wincing at the pain in her wrist. "But I didn't tell anyone."

"Then who else could it be?" Jeffrey's eyes brimmed with disappointment, his tone clipped. "Lilian is sweet-natured and gets along with everyone—except you."

Elaine let out a bitter laugh. "So just because I'm a suspect, you've already decided it's me without even investigating? And even if it was me—isn't she the one who wrecked my marriage?"

Tears welled in her eyes as she spoke, her gaze a mix of defiance and desperate pleading.

Jeffrey let go of her wrist and leaned against the desk, rubbing his temple. "She's not."

Elaine's body trembled as she tried to process his words. Then, without warning, several members of Jeffrey's security team entered the room and blocked the door.

"Jeffrey! What are you doing?" she demanded.

Jeffrey said nothing.

One of the guards set a phone on the desk. On its screen was a draft statement accusing Elaine of leaking the photos and harassing Lilian. Another held out a nondisclosure agreement and a pen.

"Sign it," Jeffrey said at last. "Admit you sent the email, apologize publicly, and this ends here."

Elaine stared at him. "You want me to confess to something I didn't do?"

"I want you to stop destroying her life."

Something inside Elaine went cold. She had expected anger from him. She hadn't expected him to use his lawyers, his security team, and his company machine to manufacture a lie and force her name beneath it.

"Jeffrey, it wasn't me. Please, just trust me once."

His expression didn't change.

When she refused to sign, he nodded to his head of security. Within minutes, her access to the house, the company accounts, and the cars had been suspended. A press statement was scheduled to go out implying that Elaine had acted out of jealousy and that Jeffrey and Lilian were the victims of harassment.

Elaine looked from the glowing phone screen to the man she'd loved for ten years. "Are you insane? You're willing to ruin my reputation for her?"

Jeffrey's voice was chillingly calm. "I'm giving you a chance to make this go away quietly."

"By lying."

"By taking responsibility."

The words landed harder than a slap. Elaine pushed the unsigned papers back across the desk. "Then publish whatever you want. But you won't get my signature on a lie."

For the first time, Jeffrey's composure flickered. Still, he let her walk out with nothing but the clothes she was wearing and the knowledge that the man who once promised to protect her had chosen to weaponize everything he'd built against her.
