His Debt Was Her Five Year Lie Chapter 1

To pay off my husband Jagger’s supposed “blood debt,” I spent five years taking on the most dangerous jobs in the grimy underbelly of Chicago. All the while, my son, Ronan, and I survived on stale, black-market bread.

On my son's birthday, I watched my husband, a rising star in the Chicago Outfit, throw a lavish party for Lilith, the woman he truly loved. Only then did I learn the truth.

To please Lilith, Jagger allowed our son, Ronan, to be thrown into an underground fighting ring. He even forced me to give my blood to save Lilith’s son.

In the end, I broke free from him. On the arm of a more powerful man, Killian, I became the Principessa—the Mafia princess—he could never hope to reach, while he knelt and wept in regret.

The once-arrogant and untouchable man finally knelt in a blizzard on a Canadian peak, clutching the cheap, charred ring I’d left behind and weeping like a stray dog abandoned in the cold.

My Mafia Husband Pretended to Be Poor, So I Left

————————

1

The day I exchanged vows with Jagger Corbin, he laid out a harsh reality: as the illegitimate son of the Corbin family, he had been cast out and burdened with a staggering blood debt.

I didn’t waver. For five years, I lived with him in a drafty apartment on Chicago's South Side. I took on the grimiest, most dangerous jobs in the underworld to support our family, while our son, Ronan, grew up on stale, black-market bread.

Today was Ronan’s fifth birthday.

To earn enough money for a real birthday cake, I was working in the stifling air of a private club owned by a Corbin family Capo. I was squeezed into a revealing waitress uniform, serving drinks.

Suddenly, just as I tried to steady my tray, my vision blurred, and the world spun into darkness.

The moment I swayed, a man with an intimidating aura of raw power caught me. "Careful."

It was Killian Rourke.

The ruler of a vast Irish mob empire. I had only ever seen his name in confidential mob files.

His gaze was sharp, landing on the medallion that had slipped from my collar—the only memento my mother left me.

"If you want a way out, come find me. I’ll help you," he said, pressing a chip embossed with a family crest into my hand.

I was confused. A way out? What did he mean?

But before I could ask, the club manager’s voice cut through the noise.

"Hey! You two, in the rags!" The manager sneered, poking my arm with a disgusted finger. "It's your lucky day. Mr. Corbin is throwing a party for the boy, Rocco, and he loves a good show. Get in there, put on a little performance, make him laugh, and a hundred grand is yours."

A hundred grand!

Ronan's eyes lit up; an opportunity like this was a godsend.

Until I walked into the private room and saw my "destitute" husband, dressed in an expensive, custom-tailored suit, sitting at the head of the lavish table.

He looked nothing like the low-level soldato whose cheap, blood-stained jacket I had to wash by hand.

The surrounding guests marveled, "Mr. Corbin is so generous! He gave Rocco an entire city block on the West Side as a baptism gift!"

"Tell me about it. Not only is he the fastest-rising star in the Chicago Outfit, but he's also completely devoted. Treats his lover's kid like his own. Where do you find a man like that?"

A rising star? An entire city block?

My eyes locked on the woman beside Jagger—Lilith. Her red haute couture gown was worth more than ten years of my blood and sweat.

Jagger gazed down at Lilith's son, Rocco, his eyes brimming with a fatherly love he’d never shown our son. If he had shown Ronan even a fraction of that tenderness, my son wouldn’t cry out for "Papa" in his sleep.

But here he was, pouring all his love into another man's child.

"Jagger," Lilith purred, pressing herself against him. "You threw such a grand party for Rocco, but today is also your other son’s birthday. Shouldn’t you at least go see him?"

She feigned kindness, but her eyes held a glint of malice.

Jagger casually swirled the whiskey in his glass, not bothering to look up.

"No need," he said coldly. "I told you, Lilith. My power, my loyalty… it's all for you. And I always keep my word."

The words were a slap in the face.

Beside me, Ronan froze. He was sharp; even through the noisy crowd, he recognized that voice. It was the father he yearned for day and night.

"Mommy, look! These two beggars are hilarious!"

Lilith’s son, Rocco, suddenly shrieked with laughter. He grabbed a handful of chips and tossed them at our feet as if we were dogs. "Fetch! This is for you!"

The red chips rained down on us. Jagger and Lilith shared an amused smile, their eyes filled with indulgence, as if we were nothing more than a sideshow for their entertainment.

In that moment, my heart shattered.

Five years. Five whole years.

He’d pretended to be a destitute soldato, letting our son and me starve on the fringes of the underworld—all to honor a promise he’d made to another woman?

He had never forgotten her.

The memories sliced into me like a dull, rusty knife.

I grew up in a church orphanage. From a young age, I knew Jagger was a star far beyond my reach. I was just a shadow in a dark corner, stealing glances.

I never dared to hope for anything, just watched as he doted on his childhood sweetheart, Lilith.

When she turned eighteen, Lilith said she wanted to see the sunrise over Lake Michigan. He booked an entire private stretch of the lakefront and lit up the sky with a full night of custom fireworks.

Wrapped in fur, Lilith snuggled into his arms and pouted, "That was too extravagant!"

He held her tightly, his voice full of adoration. "You deserve the best this world has to offer. My power, my kingdom—it’s all for my one and only princess to command."

Later, they had a fight. Lilith broke up with him and left for Europe. He chased her to the airport like a madman, only to be crushed by her words: "Stop pestering me. I'm marrying a real nobleman."

He married me to forget her. While I fought for my life to make ends meet, he was building an empire for another woman.

The moment the party ended, I took off Ronan's little bow tie with trembling hands. My son's face was streaked with tears, red from a mixture of hurt and fear.

"Mamma, Papa lied to us, didn't he?" he sobbed. "He's not poor. He just… doesn't love us."

The pain was suffocating. I held my son tight, my resolve hardening. "Ronan, we don't need a papa like that. Mamma will take you away from here, okay?"

"Okay!" Ronan clutched my collar. "Let's go far, far away!"

I took Ronan straight to an underground law firm with ties to our family and had a marriage annulment agreement printed—the kind that is binding in our world.

Late that night, Jagger returned to our dilapidated apartment.

He’d already changed out of his expensive suit and back into the cheap, worn-out jacket that reeked of stale cigarettes and sweat. He rubbed his temples, feigning exhaustion. "Big shootout at the docks today. I'm beat. Anything to eat?"

Looking at his hypocritical performance, I felt a wave of nausea.

Without a word, I slammed the document on the table.

"Sign it."

Jagger froze, a flicker of confusion in his eyes. "What's this?"

Just then, his phone rang. Lilith's coquettish voice came through, clear as day. "Jagger, Rocco is crying. He won't sleep unless you're here. Can you come over, please?"

Jagger’s expression instantly melted into tenderness. "Okay, I'll be right there."

He didn't even glance at the document. He hastily scrawled his name, grabbed his jacket, and headed for the door. "I can't breathe in this dump. I'm going out for some air."

As the door clicked shut, I stared at the signed agreement and let out a cold, hollow laugh.

"Jagger, that was a marriage annulment agreement."
