I stared at the screen. Read my own name in the body of the message. Regional Director. Effective immediately.

Around me, the office was already buzzing. Someone from marketing leaned over the cubicle wall. "Congratulations, Adriana."

I nodded. "Thanks."

Marcus appeared at my desk. He didn't smile—he wasn't that kind of supervisor—but something in his expression was satisfied. "You earned it," he said. "Don't make me regret it."

"I won't."

He walked away. I closed the email. Opened the next one. Got back to work.

But the feeling stayed. A lightness in my chest. Small. Unfamiliar. Good.

Camille showed up at my apartment at seven with a bottle of champagne and a grin that took up half her face.

"We're celebrating," she announced. "No arguments."

"I have a presentation tomorrow—"

"Which you've already finished. I know you." She pushed past me into the living room. "Go put on something that isn't business casual. We're going out."

I changed. We took a cab to a rooftop bar in SoHo. The kind of place with string lights and a view of the city that made everything feel possible. Camille ordered two glasses of champagne before we even sat down.

When they arrived, she lifted hers high. "To Adriana Mills," she said loudly. Too loudly. People at the next table glanced over. "Regional Director. Divorce survivor. Absolute legend."

I felt my face heat. "Camille—"

"And to Wesley Carr," she continued, her voice climbing, "who is currently—and I mean this with my whole chest—*fucked*."

I laughed. I couldn't help it. The sound came out sudden and bright, surprising even me.

Camille grinned wider. "There she is."

We clinked glasses. I took a sip. The champagne was cold and perfect. The city stretched out below us, lit up and alive. For the first time since I'd walked out of that apartment, the night felt entirely, uncomplicatedly good.

"He's going to regret it," Camille said. She was serious now. "You know that, right?"

I set my glass down. Looked at her. "I don't care if he does."

She studied me for a moment. Then nodded. "Good."

We stayed until the bar closed. Talked about work, about her dating disasters, about nothing important. When I got home, I fell asleep with the window open and the city humming below.

She glanced at the screen. Shrugged. "It's for the baby."

"The baby doesn't need a four-thousand-dollar crib."

"Our baby does." Her voice was light. Easy. Like they were discussing dinner plans. "The Carr heir deserves the best."

Wesley closed the laptop. Rubbed his face. "I'll figure it out."

She kissed the top of his head. "I know you will."

She left the room. Wesley sat there in the silence. He thought about calling his mother. Thought about asking for help. Didn't.

Instead, he opened a new browser tab. Searched for personal loans. Found one with a high interest rate and a fast approval process. He filled out the application. Told himself it was temporary. Just until the baby came. Just until things settled.

He hit submit.

The approval came through in twenty minutes.

I walked them through three case studies. Real numbers. Real failures. By the time I finished, the room was quiet.

After the panel, I made my way to the networking reception. Grabbed a glass of water. Checked my phone.

"That was a solid takedown."

I looked up. A man stood a few feet away. Early thirties. Dark hair. Calm eyes. He wasn't holding a business card. Wasn't angling for anything. Just standing there.

"Excuse me?"

"Your point about context," he said. "The third case study—the one about the Seattle market. You didn't mention that the campaign failed because the agency ignored local data. But that was the actual problem, wasn't it?"

I blinked. "Yes."

He nodded. "I thought so. I'm August Grant. Tech director at Orion Solutions."

"Adriana Mills."

We shook hands. His grip was firm. Brief.

"You were right, by the way," he said. "About the human judgment part. AI's a tool. People forget that."

We started talking. About the panel. About the industry. About a project his team was working on that sounded genuinely interesting. I didn't check my phone. Didn't look for an exit. We just talked.

When I finally glanced at my watch, forty minutes had passed.

"I should go," I said.

August nodded. "It was good to meet you."

"You too."

I walked toward the exit. Halfway across the room, I glanced back. He was still standing there, hands in his pockets, watching me leave.

I turned away. Kept walking.
