Chapter 4

The email arrived at 8:03 a.m.

**Subject: Re: Panel Discussion — Context vs. Automation**

I opened it. Read the first line.

*Adriana — I came across this piece last night and thought of your point about human judgment. It's a philosophy essay, not marketing, but the argument maps almost perfectly onto what you said about pattern recognition versus understanding. Thought you might find it interesting. — August*

A link followed. I clicked it. The essay was dense. Academic. The kind of thing I would have skimmed in college and pretended to understand. But I read it. Slowly. Then I read it again.

I closed my laptop. Stared at the wall.

The coffee in my mug had gone cold. Outside my window, the city moved. I sat very still.

I didn't respond to the email. Not yet.

But I didn't delete it either.

---

The clinic was on Madison Avenue. All glass and white marble. The kind of place that whispered money before you even walked through the door.

I was there for a routine checkup. Nothing important. I signed in at the front desk and took a seat in the waiting area. The chairs were leather. The magazines were current. Soft piano music played from hidden speakers.

I pulled out my phone. Opened my work email.

"Adriana?"

I looked up.

Wesley stood ten feet away. His hand was on Tiana's elbow. She was enormous now. Eight months, maybe more. Her dress was tailored. Her hair was perfect. But her face looked tired under the makeup.

Mrs. Carr stood beside them. Her expression sharpened the moment she saw me.

I set my phone in my lap. "Wesley."

He nodded. Stiff. Awkward. "Hi."

Tiana's hand moved to her stomach. A small, deliberate gesture. Claiming space.

I stood. Picked up my bag. I could have walked past them. Should have. But something stopped me.

"Congratulations," I said. My voice was even. Polite. "You must be excited."

Tiana's smile was thin. "We are."

I looked at Wesley. "Have you done the genetic screening yet?"

His brow furrowed. "What?"

"Genetic screening," I repeated. I kept my tone light. Helpful. "For hereditary conditions. It's standard now. Just to make sure everything's okay. For the baby's sake."

Mrs. Carr stepped forward. Her voice was ice. "How dare you."

I met her eyes. Said nothing.

"You barren, bitter woman," she continued. Her voice rose. People in the waiting room looked over. "Don't you dare bring your jealousy near this family."

I didn't blink. Didn't move. Just held her gaze.

"I was only trying to help," I said quietly.

Mrs. Carr's face flushed red. Her mouth opened. Closed.

I turned. Walked toward the exit. Behind me, I heard Wesley say something low. His mother's voice, sharp and furious. Tiana, silent.

The door closed behind me. The street was bright. Loud. I kept walking.

My hands were steady. My breathing was calm.

I felt nothing.

Not anger. Not satisfaction.

Just the quiet certainty that I had planted something. Small. Precise.

And now I could wait.

---

The text came three days after the summit.

*Dinner? Not work. Just dinner. — August*

I stared at my phone. Read it twice. Set it down. Picked it up again.

Camille was on my couch, flipping through a magazine. "Who is it?"

"No one."

She looked at me. "Liar."

I showed her the screen.

She sat up. "August Grant? The guy from the panel?"

"Yes."

"The one you talked to for forty minutes?"

"Yes."

"And he wants to take you to dinner?"

"Apparently."

Camille grinned. "Say yes."

"I don't know."

"Adriana." She set the magazine down. Her voice softened. "Say yes."

I looked at the text again. At the simplicity of it. No games. No subtext. Just a question.

I typed a response. Deleted it. Typed another.

*Okay.*

I hit send before I could change my mind.

Camille whooped. Loud enough that my neighbor probably heard. "This is it," she said. "This is the beginning of the rest of your life."

I rolled my eyes. "You're being dramatic."

"I'm being right."

I set my phone down. Looked at her. "What if I'm not ready?"

She leaned forward. Her expression was serious now. "You don't have to be ready. You just have to show up."

I nodded. Slowly.

My phone buzzed.

*Saturday? 7 p.m.? I know a place in the West Village. Quiet. Good food. — August*

I typed back.

*Saturday works.*

Camille was still grinning. I ignored her. Picked up my coffee. Took a sip.

But the feeling was there again. Small. Unfamiliar.

Good.
