Chapter 2

The courthouse steps were cold under my heels. Midtown Manhattan stretched out in front of me—glass towers catching afternoon light, taxis honking, people moving fast in every direction. I stood there with the signed divorce papers in my bag and felt nothing. Not relief. Not grief. Just a strange, hollow quiet.

I started down the steps.

"Adriana."

The voice was bright. Sweet. I stopped. Turned.

Tiana Munoz stood at the top of the steps, one hand resting on the curve of her stomach. Three months pregnant. Designer maternity dress—cream-colored, expensive, the kind with a label you were supposed to notice. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was wider.

She walked down toward me slowly, like she had all the time in the world.

"I thought that was you," she said. Her tone was warm. Friendly. The kind of friendly that had teeth. "Congratulations. On the divorce, I mean."

I didn't answer. Just watched her.

She stopped two steps above me. Close enough to make sure I saw everything—the glow, the ring on her finger, the slight swell under the silk. "I know this must be hard for you," she said softly. "But honestly? Some women just aren't woman enough, I guess." She tilted her head. "Don't take it too hard."

I looked at her. Really looked. At the performance she was giving, the script she'd memorized. The certainty in her eyes that she'd won.

I smiled.

Small. Calm. The kind of smile that didn't reach my eyes.

"You might want to make sure Wesley takes a very close look at that baby when it arrives," I said quietly.

Her smile froze.

I turned and walked down the steps. Didn't look back. Behind me, I heard nothing. No footsteps. No voice. Just silence.

The sidewalk was crowded. I slipped into the flow of people and disappeared.

---

Monday morning. The office was still half-empty when I arrived. I set my bag on my desk, opened my laptop, and pulled up the campaign strategy document our team had been wrestling with for two weeks. The numbers were bad. The messaging was worse. I'd known it the first time I read it, but I'd kept quiet. I wasn't regional director. I didn't have the authority to tear it apart.

Not yet.

By the time the rest of the team filtered in, I had a full breakdown ready. Charts. Comparisons. A revised timeline that actually made sense. I didn't announce it. I just waited.

The meeting started at nine. Our supervisor, Marcus Chen, pulled up the original strategy on the screen. "We're two weeks out from launch," he said. "I need solutions, not problems."

I raised my hand.

Marcus looked at me. "Adriana."

I stood. Walked to the front. Pulled up my revised document and put it on the screen.

"This campaign is failing because we're targeting the wrong demographic," I said. "The data's right here. We're spending sixty percent of our budget on an audience that isn't converting. If we pivot now—shift to mobile-first, reallocate the budget to these three channels—we can recover."

I walked them through it. Step by step. No filler. No apologies. Just the work.

When I finished, the room was quiet.

Marcus leaned back in his chair. Looked at the screen. Looked at me. "Send me that document," he said. "We're using it."

I nodded. Sat back down.

After the meeting, Marcus stopped by my desk. "You've been holding back," he said.

"I was busy," I said.

He smiled slightly. "Don't be busy anymore. I'm recommending you for regional director."

He walked away before I could respond.

I stared at my screen. At the work I'd just done. At the space I was finally stepping into.

I exhaled slowly.

---

Wesley carried the last box into the apartment and set it down in the hallway. Tiana's things. Clothes. Shoes. A dozen shopping bags from stores he couldn't afford but didn't say no to.

His mother stood in the living room, surveying the space like a general inspecting a battlefield won. "Much better," she said. "This is how it should have been from the beginning."

Tiana appeared from the bedroom, her hand on her stomach again. She smiled at Mrs. Carr. "Thank you for the dinner. It was beautiful."

"Of course," Mrs. Carr said. "You're carrying the Carr heir. You deserve to be celebrated."

Wesley watched them. Watched his mother's face—proud, satisfied. Watched Tiana's smile—perfect, practiced.

He thought about Adriana. About the way she'd looked at him the day she left. Calm. Quiet. Like she'd already moved on.

He shook his head. Pushed the thought away.

Later that night, after his mother left, Wesley found Tiana in the bedroom. She was on the phone, laughing softly, her voice low and warm.

She saw him in the doorway. Her expression shifted—just slightly. She ended the call.

"Who was that?" Wesley asked.

"Just a girlfriend," Tiana said. She set the phone down on the nightstand, screen-side down.

Wesley nodded. "Okay."

He didn't ask again.

He told himself it didn't matter.

He told himself everything was fine.
