Chapter 4

I drove the PCH three times in three weeks.

The first time, I told Asher I needed air. He didn't look up from his desk. The second time, I didn't tell him anything. The third time, I left before four in the morning, when the house was dark and Lawson's surveillance car was parked half a block down and the driver was asleep.

I knew he was asleep because I'd been watching his patterns for two weeks.

The overlook was eleven miles past the last lit interchange — a pull-off barely wide enough for one car, unmarked, the kind of place that doesn't appear on tourist maps. The guardrail there was old. Rusted at the joints. I'd noted that on the first visit, the way I used to note the weakest point in an opposing counsel's argument before I took it apart.

On the third visit I parked, killed the headlights, and sat in the dark for four minutes.

Then I got out.

The device was small. My contact had described it as theatrical — his word, said with the flat professionalism of a man who had stopped finding irony in his work a long time ago. Designed for visual impact. The detonation would read, from above, as a collapse. Debris, fire, the suggestion of a body. The Pacific would do the rest.

I pressed it into the rock face with both hands. The ocean below was loud. It had been loud all three times, the same deep rhythmic violence, and I'd found it steadying in a way I hadn't expected. The water doesn't care. The water just moves.

I'd mapped the currents on my encrypted laptop, cross-referenced against the county's incident reports. There was a shelf forty feet north of the overlook, hidden below the waterline at high tide and exposed at low. I'd confirmed it on the second visit, climbing down far enough to see it with my own eyes, my hands bleeding from the rock.

I climbed back up that night and drove home and made coffee and went to work.

On the morning Amber called, I was ready.

Her voice was warm. Slightly breathless. The specific register she used when she was performing concern for an audience of one.

'I've been thinking about you,' she said. 'You've been so cooped up. I thought maybe a drive — the coast, just some air — it might help. Just us. I know we haven't always—' A small, practiced pause. 'I just want things to be better between us, Evelynn. For Asher's sake.'

I looked out the window. The sky was white and flat, the kind of sky that gives nothing away.

'That sounds nice,' I said.

She drove. I watched the road and said very little and let her fill the silence with the soft, relentless performance of a woman who had never once been called on it. She was good. I had always known she was good. You don't survive as long as she had without being genuinely skilled at the thing you do.

When she took the turn toward the overlook, I felt my pulse drop. Not spike. Drop. The particular calm of a woman who has already made her decision and is simply watching it arrive.

The impact was fast. A hard jerk of the wheel, a sickening lurch, and then the guardrail was gone and the world tilted and the sound of the ocean came up to meet us.

Amber had positioned herself well. I registered that even as I grabbed for the door frame, even as the car scraped rock and glass shattered — she was braced, she knew the angle, she had done the geometry ahead of time. She came to rest on a ledge wide enough to stand on. I ended up lower, one hand locked around a tree root that jutted from the cliff face, the Pacific churning forty feet below me, my shoulder burning where it had hit the door.

I hung there.

Above me, I heard Amber's voice — the distress call, perfectly pitched, the exact frequency of a woman who needed saving and knew someone was listening.

Asher arrived in eleven minutes. I know because I counted.

I heard his voice before I saw him. Then I saw his hands — reaching for Amber, pulling her up, both of them on solid ground. I watched him brush the hair from her face. I watched his mouth move against her temple. I couldn't hear the words. I didn't need to.

I looked up at the sky. Gray and flat and enormous. The same sky it had always been.

I reached into my jacket with my free hand.

I pressed the detonator.

The explosion was louder than I'd expected. The rock face shuddered. Debris rained into the ravine. I was already falling — controlled, angled, the way I'd practiced in my mind a hundred times over three weeks of sleepless pre-dawn hours.

The water was shockingly cold.

I went under. I came up. I swam north, counting strokes, following the current I had mapped, and I did not look back at the cliff.

I found the shelf. I dragged myself onto it. I sat there bleeding and shaking with the ocean pulling at my feet and the sound of helicopter rotors beginning somewhere above.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist.

I breathed.

Evelynn Lane was dead.

I had work to do.
