Chapter 2

The luncheon was held in the officers' hall, long tables set with white linens and the kind of stiff floral arrangements that looked expensive and smelled like nothing. I came because I always came. Five years of practice had taught me that absence was noticed, commented on, catalogued. Presence was safer.

I sat near the end of the third table with my meal container in front of me, the same insulated box I packed every week. Chicken, rice, steamed vegetables. I had learned not to expect much from these events—the conversations moved around me like water around a stone, polite and careful and never quite landing.

Esmeralda sat three chairs down, across from the colonel's wife. She was wearing a soft pink blouse that made her look younger, more fragile. She laughed at something someone said, a musical sound that turned heads.

I opened my container.

The smell hit me first. Wet, rancid, wrong. I looked down and saw brown chunks in gravy, the kind that came from a can with a picture of a golden retriever on the label.

Dog food.

The table went quiet in a ripple. I heard the woman beside me inhale sharply. Across from me, someone's fork paused halfway to her mouth.

I looked up. Esmeralda's hand was pressed to her lips, but her eyes were bright. A laugh escaped through her fingers—high, delighted, quickly smothered. "Oh my God," she said, voice shaking with what might have been shock or might have been something else. "Juliet, I'm so sorry, that's—" She broke off, shoulders trembling.

No one else spoke. The colonel's wife looked at her plate. The woman beside me found something fascinating in her water glass.

I closed the container. The sound of the latch clicking into place was very loud.

"Excuse me," I said. My voice came out steady. Another small mercy I did not deserve.

I stood, picked up the container, and walked the length of the hall with a dozen pairs of eyes on my back. I threw it in the trash by the door and kept walking until I reached my car.

I sat in the driver's seat with my hands on the wheel and my thumb pressed hard against my wrist. I counted my pulse. I did not cry.

That evening, Christopher came home late. His jacket went on the chair. His boots by the door. He moved through the house the way he always did, efficient and distant, a man completing a checklist.

I waited until he sat down at his desk, paperwork already spread in front of him.

"Something happened today," I said.

He did not look up. "Yeah?"

"At the luncheon. Someone switched my meal container. Put dog food in it." I kept my voice even. Facts only. No emotion to dismiss.

His pen kept moving across the page. "That sounds unlikely."

"It happened."

"Maybe someone made a mistake." He signed something with a sharp flick of his wrist. "These things get mixed up."

"It wasn't a mistake. Esmeralda laughed."

That made him pause. He set the pen down and finally looked at me, his expression flat and faintly annoyed, the way you'd look at a subordinate wasting your time. "You're being paranoid, Juliet."

The words landed like a hand over my mouth.

"I'm not—"

"Maybe you should stop attending these functions if they upset you so much." He picked up the pen again. "I've got a briefing at oh-six-hundred. I need to finish this."

I stood there for another moment, waiting for something. An apology. A question. Eye contact that lasted longer than two seconds.

Nothing came.

I left the room and went to bed in my clothes.

Two days later, Esmeralda came into the living room with her face blotchy and her hands shaking. "Christopher," she said, voice breaking on his name. "I can't find them. The ration vouchers. The ones they issued me last week. I've looked everywhere."

He was on his feet immediately, that terrible gentleness in his voice. "It's okay. We'll find them. Where did you last see them?"

"In my bag, I thought, but—" She pressed her fingers to her temples. "They're serialized. If someone turned them in, I could be accused of—"

"No one's accusing you of anything." His hand settled on her shoulder, steadying. "I'll handle it."

He called base security within the hour.

They came that evening. Two officers I recognized from functions, their faces carefully blank. Christopher stood in the doorway and told them to check my things.

I watched from the hallway as they opened drawers, lifted cushions, moved through the house with methodical efficiency. One of them went to the coat closet. He pulled out my coat—the long dark one I wore on cold days, the one with the charred fragment of wood still pressed into the inside pocket.

He reached into the outer pocket and pulled out a slim envelope.

Ration vouchers. Serialized. Esmeralda's name printed across the top.

The air left my lungs.

"Ma'am," the officer said quietly. "We're going to need you to come with us."

Christopher stepped forward. His hand closed around my upper arm, grip hard enough that I felt his fingers through the fabric of my sleeve. He did not look at my face. He did not ask a single question.

He walked me to the security office himself, his hand a vise, his silence a verdict.

I stumbled once on the stairs. He did not slow down.
