Chapter 3

The security office smelled like burnt coffee and old carpet. I sat in a metal chair under fluorescent lights that hummed too loud. Two officers across from me. Christopher standing by the door with his arms crossed, watching.

The questions came in a flat rhythm. Where were you Tuesday afternoon. Who had access to your coat. When did you last see the vouchers. I answered each one the same way—calm, precise, no wasted words. I had learned that trick years ago. Emotion made you guilty before anyone checked the facts.

"The serial numbers," the older officer said, flipping through a file. "They were issued Friday at fourteen-hundred hours. Base log shows you were at the commissary. Three witnesses place you there."

"Yes," I said.

"So you couldn't have received them directly."

"No."

He closed the file. Looked at his partner. Something passed between them that I couldn't read.

"Ma'am, you're cleared. Someone else had access to your coat. We'll follow up on that." He stood. "You're free to go."

I nodded. Stood. My legs felt strange, like I'd forgotten how to distribute my weight. Christopher pushed off the doorframe and walked out ahead of me without a word.

The walk home was six blocks. He stayed three steps ahead the entire time. His shoulders were rigid. His hands were fists. I watched the back of his neck and thought about all the things I could say. *They cleared me. I told you it wasn't me. Someone put those vouchers in my coat.*

I said nothing. He wouldn't hear it anyway.

When we reached the house, he went straight to his office and closed the door. The lock clicked. A small sound. Final.

I stood in the kitchen with my coat still on and my thumb pressed hard against my wrist. The pulse there was fast and thin. I counted it until my chest stopped shaking.

Then I sat down at the table, pulled out a piece of paper, and started writing.

*Petition for Dissolution of Marriage.*

My handwriting was neat. Careful. I had always had good handwriting. My father used to say it looked like something from another century, all those loops and careful slants. I wrote out the date. Our names. The standard legal language I'd looked up weeks ago and memorized without admitting to myself why.

I wrote it all down in blue ink under the kitchen light while the house settled around me. Somewhere down the hall, I heard Esmeralda laugh. Soft. Musical. Christopher's voice answered, too low to make out the words.

I kept writing.

When I finished, I folded the paper in half and slipped it into my bag. I would file it tomorrow. I would walk into the base legal office and hand it to the clerk and it would be real. Documented. Irreversible.

I sat there for a long time after, staring at my hands.

I didn't cry. There was nothing left to cry over. Just a marriage that had ended years ago, and a woman who was finally willing to admit it.

---

Christopher's phone rang during dinner two nights later. He glanced at the screen, frowned, and stepped into the hallway. I heard his voice through the wall—clipped, tense, the tone he used when something had gone wrong and he was deciding who to blame.

When he came back, his face was unreadable. He sat down. Cut his chicken into precise squares. Ate three bites in silence.

"They're auditing the Compatibility Program," he said finally. "Routine systems check. Flagged some irregularities in older files."

I looked up. "Irregularities?"

"Database errors. Happens sometimes." He didn't meet my eyes. "They said they'd follow up if it's relevant."

Something in his voice didn't sit right. Too flat. Too controlled. Like he was reading from a script he'd written for himself.

"Did they say which files?" I asked.

He shook his head. "Just routine."

He finished his meal in silence and left the table without clearing his plate. I heard his office door close. The lock click.

I sat there with my fork in my hand and my food going cold, and I thought about the word *irregularities*. I thought about five years of marriage built on a 100% match score. I thought about how Christopher had never once looked at me the way he looked at her.

I thought about the petition folded in my bag, waiting.

And I thought, with a strange cold clarity, that maybe the match had never been real at all.

I stood. Cleared the table. Washed the dishes in water so hot it turned my hands red. I pressed my thumb against my wrist and counted my pulse until it steadied.

Tomorrow, I would file the papers.

Tonight, I would sleep in my clothes again, in the room that used to be yellow, with the hallway light burning and the wooden box on the shelf casting its small shadow across the wall.

Waiting.
