Chapter 2

The first thing I noticed was the empty seat.

Monday morning, I walked into the conference room for the Delacroix pitch, and two of my team members weren't there. Ravi and Sydney. The two people who'd built the deck with me for three weeks straight.

"They're with Priscilla," Naomi told me quietly, sliding into the chair beside me. "She pulled them onto her Fenwick account Friday afternoon. After you left."

I didn't say anything. I opened my laptop and started the meeting with half a team and a deck I'd have to defend alone.

It kept happening after that. Small things. A calendar invite for a client call that overlapped, down to the minute, with a meeting I'd confirmed two weeks earlier — except somehow my meeting got moved, and nobody remembered moving it. A division briefing where I sat in the third row and watched Priscilla stand at the podium and describe the Bellweather campaign strategy — my strategy, the one I'd spent four months building — as "a fresh perspective she'd been excited to bring to the team."

I watched her say it. She didn't even look at me.

Afterward, in my office, I opened the drawer where I kept the color-coded folders. Blue for PR crises. Red for contract disputes. I made a new one that day. Yellow. I didn't label it with her name. I just started writing down dates, times, screenshots of calendar changes, a photo of the slide with my work on it under her name. I told myself it was just documentation. Due diligence. I didn't tell myself what it was really for, because I didn't want to know yet.

Naomi found me still at my desk at seven that night, the yellow folder open in front of me.

"You should say something," she said.

"To who?"

She didn't have an answer for that. Neither did I.

The tabloid story broke Wednesday morning while I was still in the shower. By the time I checked my phone, it was already everywhere — grainy photos of Gael leaving the Wickham, a boutique hotel on the Upper East Side, with a brunette in a fur-trimmed coat. A caption speculating about a secret child. A quote from an unnamed source who claimed to have seen them together "for months."

I knew, the way I always knew, that it wasn't him. It never was. I'd learned the shape of his real indiscretions versus Vincenzo's borrowed ones — Vincenzo who liked hotels with side entrances and cash bars, who always managed to be photographed at an angle that made the story just vague enough to stick to whoever was standing nearest.

I didn't ask Gael. I never asked anymore. I just got dressed and went to work and did what I always did.

By nine, I had PR on the phone. By ten, legal was drafting language. By eleven, I had a containment statement ready for Gael's approval — clean, boring, the kind of non-denial that would let the story die of its own weightlessness in forty-eight hours if nobody fed it. I'd done this so many times I could write it half-asleep. I probably had, once or twice.

I was walking the draft down to his office when Priscilla stepped out of the elevator, phone in hand, reading the same headline I'd been fighting since dawn.

She looked up when she saw me. Smiled the way she always smiled — soft, sympathetic, like she was sorry for me before I'd even done anything to be sorry about.

"You're so good at cleaning up after him," she said, falling into step beside me for exactly three seconds, long enough to make sure I heard it. "I suppose someone has to be."

I kept walking. I didn't look at her. "Excuse me," I said. "I have a meeting."

"Of course you do." Her heels clicked away behind me, unhurried.

I stood outside Gael's office for a moment before I went in, the statement folded in my hand, my pulse doing something strange and fast in my throat. I told myself it was the tabloid story. I told myself it was the deadline. I didn't let myself think about the way her voice had sounded — not cruel, exactly. Bored. Like she already knew she'd won and was only saying it out loud for her own amusement.

Gael read the statement in under a minute, the way he read everything, and slid it back across the desk without looking at me. "Fine. Send it."

"There'll be follow-up questions," I said. "About the child."

"There's no child." He said it flatly, already turning back to his monitor. "Handle it."

Handle it. I stood there a second longer than I needed to, waiting for something — I don't know what. An acknowledgment. A thank you. Even just a glance that said he knew what it cost me to keep doing this, year after year, story after story that was never even his.

He didn't look up.

I went back to my office and sent the statement myself.

That night, alone in the guest room, I opened the yellow folder again. I added a new page. I wrote the date, and under it, word for word, what Priscilla had said in the hallway. I don't know why I wrote it down. It wasn't a crisis. It wasn't a contract. It didn't fit anywhere I had a color for.

I closed the folder and turned off the light, and somewhere down the hall, through the wall I used to sleep against, I heard her laugh at something he'd said.
