After His Mistress Poisoned Our Baby, He Blamed Me Chapter 1

The call came at 11:47 p.m. I remember because I was standing over Gracelynn's crib, watching her chest rise and fall, and I glanced at the clock when Brandon's phone lit up the hallway outside her door. He didn't come in. I heard his voice drop low and fast, heard him say a name I didn't recognize yet — Danna — and then the front door, and then nothing. No goodbye. No explanation. Just the sound of his car leaving the circular drive on Mercer Island, gravel spitting under the tires.

He didn't call until morning.

"There was an accident on the ninety," he said, like he was reading me a weather report. "Danna Griffin. She's in Stone Memorial. The private wing." A pause, like he expected me to know the name the way he did. "I'm staying here today."

"Who's Danna Griffin?" I asked, bouncing Gracelynn on my hip, my voice still thick with sleep I hadn't gotten.

"Someone I used to know," he said. "I'll explain when I'm home."

He didn't explain. Not that day, not the next. What he did, on the third morning, was walk into our bedroom holding a clipboard like it was an invoice.

"She needs blood," he said. "AB-negative. It's rare. You're a match."

I set down the bottle I was warming. "How do you know I'm a match?"

"Your prenatal records. I had Dr. Halloway pull them." He said it flatly, like pulling my medical file without asking was a line item, not a violation. "You'll need to come in this afternoon."

"Brandon, I have Gracelynn—"

"Rosa will watch her." He held out the clipboard. "Sign here."

I looked at the form. I looked at him. Four years of marriage had taught me the shape of his patience, and I could see, even then, that it had already run out — for me, at least. "I need a minute to think."

He didn't give me one. He took the pen from my hand, and he signed my name himself, the letters slanting wrong, nothing like my own signature, and called down for the security detail before I'd even set the bottle back on the warmer.

They didn't drag me. They didn't have to. Two men in dark suits simply stood in the doorway of the medical suite until I walked in on my own, because the alternative — Gracelynn watching her mother physically restrained — was worse than anything they could have done to me. I sat in the chair. I watched the needle go in. I watched my own blood, dark and quiet, fill the bag hanging beside me, and I understood, with a kind of clarity that felt almost peaceful, exactly where I ranked in Brandon Stone's world.

That was the first time. There were five more in eleven days.

By the second week I couldn't lift Gracelynn without sitting down first. Bruises bloomed at both elbows, yellow-green under my sleeves. I stopped scheduling anything before ten a.m., because that was when the dizziness usually passed.

On day seven, Brandon told me Danna was being discharged to the estate to "finish recovering somewhere comfortable," and that I would host a welcome dinner. Cook. Flowers. Smile.

I did all three.

Danna Griffin turned out to be beautiful in the specific, engineered way of women who have spent a lifetime being looked at — golden hair, a soft cast on one wrist, eyes that welled up on command. She held Brandon's hand across my table and thanked him for saving her life, and thanked me, too, in a voice pitched for an audience, for the blood I'd given without being asked whether I wanted to.

Halfway through the second course, she set down her fork.

"Brandon," she said softly, not looking at me. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be difficult. It's just — being near her. After everything. It's triggering something."

The table went quiet. I felt my face do nothing at all, which took more effort than anything I'd done in eleven days.

Brandon leaned toward me, low enough that only I could hear. "Finish in the kitchen. Just for tonight."

I picked up my plate myself. Rosa Delgado, the housekeeper, made room for me on the stool beside her without a word, the way you make room for someone you've decided not to embarrass. My sleeves were long enough to hide the bruising. My plate went cold before I touched it. Rosa didn't ask what happened. I think she already knew.

Danna didn't leave after that dinner. She stayed — rearranging Gracelynn's feeding schedule, insisting on holding the bottle herself, appearing at Brandon's side at a Stone Holdings gala as his "family friend" while I stayed home, too pale to be photographed.

That night, still recovering from the sixth draw, I opened the household accounts on my laptop out of habit — a widow's-daughter's habit, my father's habit, checking the numbers because someone should. A wire transfer caught my eye. Four hundred thousand dollars, dated that morning, routed to an account under the name Danna M. Griffin.

I didn't say anything to Brandon. I didn't cry, either.

I opened a blank document instead, and typed the number, the date, the account reference — three lines, nothing more. A reflex, I told myself. Nothing to it.

But something in me that had been silent for four years lifted its head and started, very quietly, to take notes.
