Chapter 4

My father didn’t do anything by halves. When Thomas Phillips hosted an event, the entire city stopped to pay attention.

For the welcome-back gala at The Plaza Hotel, he took charge of every single detail. He didn’t leave it to event planners. He handled the calls himself from his study.

"White peonies," he told the florist over the phone, his tone firm. "Only the Dutch imports. Five hundred stems for the foyer, and another thousand for the grand ballroom. Not a single petal bruised."

I stood in the doorway, listening. Peonies had been my favorite since I was eight years old. Dad remembered. He never forgot what mattered to me.

Down the hall, two entire teams from our legal and media departments had taken over the library. Dad had them working in twelve-hour shifts. They were building the evidence package.

Bank wires. Internal emails. Investor contracts.

They synced three years of Ryker's hotel reservations with surveillance footage from Manhattan and Miami. Every credit card swipe he made for Kenzie's jewelry sat beside timestamps of phone calls where he claimed he was working late.

"Make it clean," Dad ordered the lead media tech. "High resolution. Large fonts for the screens. When she steps on that stage, nobody in that room will have any doubts."

It wasn't just a presentation. It was an execution.

At three o'clock, I sat down at the heavy walnut table in the main conference room.

Four senior partners from our legal team stood around me. Thick binders sat in neat rows across the polished wood.

"Everything is verified, Ms. Phillips," the lead attorney said, opening the first binder. "Ironclad."

I pulled the files toward me and began to read.

For three years, I had suspected. I had smelled the foreign perfume on Ryker's collars. I had heard the quiet whispers behind closed doors. But seeing it in black and white was different.

The dates lined up like cold bricks.

June fourteenth: Ryker told me he had an emergency client dinner in Midtown. The hotel receipt showed a penthouse suite at the Baccarat with Kenzie Sanders, complete with vintage champagne.

October third: He told me he was too busy to attend my birthday dinner. The surveillance stills showed him holding Kenzie's hand outside a boutique on Fifth Avenue, buying her a diamond bracelet using an account I had secretly funded.

Then came the investor presentations. Slide after slide of my financial projections, my operational plans, my strategic models. Ryker had simply pasted his own name over mine and presented them to Wall Street as his personal genius.

I didn't blink. I didn't shout.

My left thumb brushed the inside of my wrist, pressing hard against the pulse point. The skin beneath my fingertips went cool.

I picked up a black fine-tip pen from the table.

My hand was completely steady.

I began marking the pages. Red sticky tabs on the wire transfers. Black ink circles around the dates where his lies directly contradicted corporate filings.

"Put this bank statement on the main display," I said quietly, pointing to an offshore routing slip. "Slide forty-two. Put the hotel footage right beside his public interview about family values. Let them play side by side."

The lawyers looked at each other. None of them spoke.

"Is that clear?" I asked, looking up.

"Very clear, Ms. Phillips," the attorney answered with a respectful nod.

I set the pen down. The ink was dry.

By Wednesday, Creed was simply part of the house.

He didn't ask for permission. He didn't make a grand entrance. He just showed up around ten in the morning, carrying two paper cups from the little coffee shop near Central Park.

He walked into the sunroom, set a cup in front of me, and sat down.

"Black," he said simply. "No sugar."

"Thank you, Creed."

I pulled a file onto my lap. Creed didn't ask what was inside. He didn't offer unsolicited advice or tell me to take a break. He pulled a hardcover book from his coat pocket, leaned back into the wicker chair, and began to read.

The silence between us was easy. The garden outside was bright with autumn sunlight, the oak leaves turning amber against the stone walls. Whenever I looked up from the harsh numbers and ugly betrayals, Creed was just there. Grounded. Calm. Like a solid wall keeping the cold wind out.

That evening, he stayed for dinner.

The dining room was quiet, lit by low crystal chandeliers. A warm roast sat on the silver platters between us.

Dad sat at the head of the table. Creed sat across from me. We talked about London, about the shipping contracts his family had just closed in Rotterdam, and about an old sailing instructor we both used to dread as kids.

Then the conversation slowed.

Dad set his wine glass down on the white linen. The faint chime echoed in the quiet room. He looked up, his sharp gray eyes locking onto Creed.

Creed didn't look away. He set his fork down, his posture relaxed but completely steady.

They didn't say a word. The silence stretched between them for five long seconds. It was the look of two powerful men who loved the same woman in entirely different ways—one who had guarded her from birth, and one who had waited ten years in the dark just to hold her coat.

A silent question hung in the air.

Creed answered it with the absolute stillness in his eyes.

Finally, Dad gave a single, almost imperceptible nod.

"More wine, Creed?" my father asked, his voice softer than usual.

"Please, Thomas," Creed said quietly.

I watched them both, the tightness in my chest loosening just a little more. For the first time in three years, I felt safe.
