Chapter 5

On Thursday afternoon, Marcus brought me another audio file.

"Ryker had lunch with Julian Cole," Marcus said, placing his tablet on the desk. "Cole got an invite to your gala."

I pressed play.

The audio crackled, then Julian’s loud voice filled the room. "The whole city is going to The Plaza tomorrow, Ryker. Thomas Phillips is officially bringing his daughter out. Apparently, she’s been living quietly right here in Manhattan for three years."

There was a long silence on the tape.

"Three years?" Ryker’s voice sounded tight. Strained.

"Yeah. Nobody knows what she looks like," Julian continued. "Old money stuff. But every billionaire on the East Coast will be in that ballroom."

"Phillips..." Ryker murmured.

He didn't really move in those circles. To Ryker, the Phillips Empire was just a mythical name on top of skyscrapers. But the words *three years in Manhattan* seemed to strike a nerve. I could hear his heavy, ragged breathing through the speaker. A strange dread was creeping into him.

Then his phone buzzed on the recording. Ryker dialed a number.

"Kenzie," Ryker snapped when she picked up. "Find your best evening dress. We’re going to a gala at The Plaza tomorrow night."

"A gala?" Kenzie’s voice shrilled with delight. "Ryker, really? For us?"

"Just shut up and get ready," Ryker barked. "I need investors. And I need to be seen."

I tapped the screen and stopped the audio.

Ryker thought he was going to save his company. He had no idea he was walking straight into his own execution.

That evening, the estate fell completely quiet.

I couldn't sleep, so I walked down the long east hallway. I ended up in the music room. Moonlight spilled through the French doors, casting blue shadows across the dark floorboards.

In the center of the room sat the black Steinway grand piano.

I hadn't touched a single key since the day I married Ryker. Ryker had hated the piano. He used to say classical music gave him a headache and called it a waste of time. So I had shut the lid, locked it away, and forgotten who I was.

Slowly, I walked over. I lifted the heavy fallboard.

The keys were clean and cool beneath my fingertips.

I sat down on the leather bench. My hands hovered over the ivory for a moment, trembling slightly. Then I pressed the keys.

I started playing an old piece I learned when I was ten.

My fingers were stiff. My joints felt clumsy. The rhythm was completely off, and after a few bars, I hit a sharp, sour note. It echoed loudly in the empty room.

I stopped. My breath hitched in my chest.

"You always rushed the third measure," a deep voice said softly from the doorway.

I turned my head.

Creed stood leaning against the doorframe. He had his hands in his pockets. His collar was unbuttoned, his dark hair slightly messy from the wind outside.

He wasn't smiling. He was just looking at me.

His hazel eyes were wide, completely open, and filled with a tenderness so deep it made my throat ache. It was eleven years of silent patience, laid bare in the dim moonlight. He didn't hide it. He didn't try to look tough. He looked at me like I was the only person left in the world.

Something inside my chest cracked open. A warm, quiet ache spread behind my ribs.

We didn't say another word.

He stayed in the doorway, watching me with steady eyes. I gently lowered the piano lid. I stood up, walked past him, and brushed his arm with mine.

"Goodnight, Creed," I whispered.

"Goodnight, Margot," he replied.

That night, I curled under the warm sheets. For the first time in three long years, my left thumb never touched my wrist. I slept deeply until morning.

By Friday afternoon, the Phillips estate was buzzing with stylists and tailors.

I stood in the center of my dressing room, looking at the full-length mirror.

The dress wasn't just beautiful. It was armor.

It was a custom black silk gown with clean, architectural lines. It hugged my waist and fell to the floor like liquid obsidian. Diamond clips pinned my dark hair back, showing the sharp line of my jaw and neck. There was no hesitation in my stance. No polite, shrinking posture to make a weak man feel big.

A soft knock came at the door.

Dad walked in. He wore a crisp, tailored tuxedo. His silver hair was brushed back, his posture straight as an arrow.

He stopped a few feet away. He looked at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

He reached out and took both of my hands in his. His grip was warm and steady.

"Your mother would have loved to see this," he said. His voice was thick with emotion. "She would be so proud of you, Margot."

A lump formed in my throat, but I swallowed it down. I squeezed his hands back.

"Thank you, Dad."

I turned back to the mirror.

The tired, quiet housewife who cooked dinners in silence was gone. The woman who begged for a crumb of love was dead.

Looking back at me was the sole heiress of the Phillips Empire.

And tonight, New York was going to remember my name.
