Chapter 3

Creed landed at JFK on a rainy Thursday morning.

I found out later that he had been in the middle of a high-stakes board meeting in London. The deal on the table was worth hundreds of millions. But the moment his phone buzzed with the news that I had left Ryker, he snapped his laptop shut. He stood up, told his stunned directors that the meeting was over, and booked the first flight to New York.

My private phone buzzed at noon.

His name lit up the screen. In three years, Creed was one of the few numbers I had never blocked. He had never sent a spiteful text. He had never crossed a boundary.

I answered. "Hello?"

"I’m in New York," Creed said. His voice was deep, steady, and completely calm. "Whenever you’re ready."

He didn’t ask where I was staying. He didn’t drive up to the Phillips estate. He didn't demand an explanation, and he didn't tell me what to do.

He just waited.

That silence was louder than any promise Ryker had ever made.

Two days passed before I finally looked down at my phone. My fingers didn't hesitate. I typed a single word:

*Saturday.*

We met at an old Italian bistro tucked away on a quiet street in the West Village. It had low brick arches and red-and-white tablecloths. We used to sneak out of our prep school and split bowls of pasta here when we were sixteen.

I arrived five minutes early. Creed was already sitting in the corner booth.

He wore a dark charcoal coat over a white collared shirt. He was taller than I remembered, his shoulders broader. But his eyes were the exact same warm hazel. When he saw me, he stood up slowly.

"Margot," he said softly.

"Creed."

He pulled out my chair. His movements were easy, without any nervous tension. He ordered black coffee for me and sparkling water for himself without looking at the menu. He remembered.

For the first hour, we didn't talk about Ryker. Creed didn't bring up the divorce, the mistress, or the three years I had spent away. He didn't say *I told you so.* He didn't look at me with pity.

Instead, he listened.

He asked about small things. Then, out of nowhere, he brought up our sixteenth summer.

"Remember that sailboat in Rhode Island?" he asked, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

A tiny spark lit up in my chest. "The one you swore you could steer?"

"I could steer it," Creed countered smoothly. "The wind just disagreed. You were supposed to drop the mainsail."

"You lost your left shoe in the harbor, Creed. And I was covered in cold seaweed for three hours."

Creed let out a low chuckle. It was warm and rich.

Before I realized it, a soft laugh bubbled up from my throat. It felt strange in my chest—light, almost forgotten. For three years, my laughter had been tight and polite, performative for Ryker’s business dinners. This was real.

We talked for two more hours.

When the waiter brought the check, Creed paid without a fuss. He walked me to my town car under the light evening drizzle. He opened the passenger door, keeping his umbrella angled over my head.

"Get some rest, Margot," he said.

"Thank you, Creed. For tonight."

He smiled, stepped back, and let the driver close the door.

As the car pulled into traffic, I looked down at my hands in my lap. My thumb wasn't pressing into the skin of my left wrist. I hadn't touched it once all evening. The tight knot in my chest was gone.

On Monday morning, Marcus handed me a fresh stack of reports in my father’s sunroom.

Ryker’s world was falling apart at the seams.

The third-quarter numbers had just landed on his desk, and they were an absolute disaster. With Arthur Vance’s thirty-million-dollar funding gone, Ryker had no liquidity. The supplier discounts were wiped out, cutting his profit margins to zero.

"He called an emergency board meeting at nine," Marcus reported, pointing to an audio transcript. "It was a bloodbath."

Without Victor Hale, Ryker had no idea how the company’s internal finances actually worked. The board members threw basic operational questions at him. What was the debt-to-equity ratio? How would they cover payroll next Friday?

Ryker couldn't answer. He stuttered. He blamed market volatility. He sweated straight through his thousand-dollar suit. By noon, two major creditors were already circling, threatening to call in their loans.

Ryker was losing his mind. In his head, everything had worked when I was around. He believed I had just walked out to punish him, and if he found me, he could sweet-talk me into fixing the mess.

He hired two high-end private investigation firms to track me down.

Marcus turned the iPad toward me with a grim smile. "Here is the summary the investigators gave him twenty minutes ago."

I read the screen:

*Subject: Margot Dean.*

*Results: Inconclusive. Subject possesses no active bank accounts under this name. No lease agreements. No utility bills. No employment history. Subject appears to have zero traceable connections, assets, or family background. Location: Unknown.*

To Ryker’s investigators, "Margot Dean" was a ghost. She didn't exist.

Marcus chuckled quietly. "Ryker threw his coffee mug through his office window after reading that."

I set the tablet down on the glass table.

Ryker wasn't just furious anymore. He was terrified. For three years, he thought he was sleeping next to a simple woman he could control.

Now, he was finally realizing that he had no idea who I really was.
