Chapter 3

They arrived at eight-fifteen.

I heard the elevator before I heard the knock — that particular hum of the private lift that meant someone with a key fob was on the way up. I was still in my robe, both hands wrapped around a coffee mug I hadn't drunk from, the divorce papers sitting on the table in front of me like a quiet dare.

I didn't move.

Florence came in first. Head-to-toe Chanel, the cream bouclé jacket with the gold buttons, pearl earrings the size of small moons. She swept through the foyer like she owned it — because she'd always acted like she did. Paxton followed, already looking at his phone.

"Esme." Florence air-kissed the space beside my cheek. Her perfume was thick and floral and suffocating. "You look tired, sweetheart."

I said nothing.

She moved to the mantelpiece. One gloved finger along the edge. She examined it, found nothing, and set her clutch down anyway, like she was claiming territory.

"We just came from breakfast nearby," she said, drifting toward the living room. "Thought we'd check in. After everything."

*After everything.* The phrase she used for the affair the way other people use *the incident* or *that time* — soft enough to slide right past accountability.

"Jared isn't here," I said.

"Yes, I know." She settled onto the sofa and smoothed her skirt. "He texted Paxton this morning. Something came up with work." She smiled at me with her teeth. "He works so hard. Always has. You know, most women would be grateful to have a man who provides the way he does."

Paxton sat in the armchair and didn't look up from his phone.

"He has such a big heart," Florence continued. "After *what happened* — and he stayed, Esme. He chose this family. That says everything about his character."

I watched her mouth move. I heard every word. I felt them land somewhere below my sternum and just sit there, flat and heavy.

"Of course, a marriage takes two." She tilted her head. The smile stayed. "Perhaps if you put in a little effort. Did something with your hair. A woman has to keep herself up, especially after a baby. Men notice these things. It's just biology, dear. Not a criticism."

Paxton finally spoke without looking up. "The boy made a mistake. He corrected it. Move on."

That was it. That was the whole sentence.

I looked at him — at the crown of his silver head, the expensive watch on his wrist, the complete and total absence of any interest in the room he was sitting in — and I felt something inside me go very, very still.

Florence was still talking. Something about my hair. Something about effort. I watched her lips and thought about the shoebox. About five hundred and twenty-one envelopes on my white duvet. About Jared's voice through the wall at midnight, soft and careful, begging.

About a notification at 4:47 a.m. *Seat 3A. Departed.*

"You're right," I said.

Florence paused. She looked pleased. "I'm glad you—"

"Thank you for stopping by."

The smile flickered. "Well. We just wanted to—"

"I'll tell Jared you came." I stood up and walked to the foyer and opened the front door.

She left the way she always did — chin up, a small tight smile, the faint implication that I should feel lucky. Paxton pocketed his phone and followed without a word, without once making eye contact.

The door clicked shut.

I stood in the kitchen and counted to three.

Then I went to the bedroom and pulled the suitcase from the top shelf of the closet.

---

I packed the way I'd always done everything in this apartment — quietly, efficiently, without anyone watching.

Passport. Norah's stuffed rabbit, the one she'd left behind when the van came. The manila envelope with the divorce papers. And the printed folder I'd been building for weeks — hotel receipts from the Midtown Marriott, timestamped phone records, copies of seventeen of the letters. Enough.

I called the babysitter. I booked the flight.

---

The woman in the seat next to me on the plane was maybe sixty, soft around the edges, with reading glasses on a beaded chain. She glanced at me twice before she said it.

"You okay, hon? You haven't moved since we boarded."

I looked at her. And something loosened in my chest — just slightly, just enough.

"I'm going to a wedding," I said.

I smiled. A real one. It surprised me.

---

The hotel was small and clean, twelve minutes from the Gilbert estate. I showered and stood in front of the bathroom mirror with a thin white towel around my shoulders and looked at myself for a long time.

Same face. Same gray threading through the hair Florence had just criticized. Same dark circles.

But something behind my eyes was different. Settled. Like a compass needle that had been spinning for years and had finally, quietly, found north.

I put on the black dress. I smoothed the front of it with both palms.

Outside, the Hamptons light was gold and clean and indifferent to everything I was about to do.

I picked up the folder. I picked up my bag.

I walked out.
