Chapter 4

I called Chloe at seven.

She picked up on the second ring, which told me she'd been expecting it. Chloe Vance always knew things before you said them. It was what made her the best media strategist I'd ever worked with, back when I was still someone who worked.

'Esme Robertson,' she said. Not a question.

'I need a favor.'

A pause. The sound of a chair rolling back. 'How big?'

'The Midtown Marriott. About three years ago. There's a name — Amoura Greene. She may have checked in under her own card or his. Jared Stone.'

Another pause. Longer. 'You're sure you want this?'

'I already have the letters, Chloe. I just need the receipts to be airtight.'

She exhaled slowly. Then: 'Give me two hours.'

She called back in ninety minutes. The duplicate receipts came through on my email at 9:47 p.m. — two nights at the Marriott, room 1114, Jared Stone's corporate card. Then the call logs from our shared family plan, which Chloe pulled through a contact I didn't ask about. Forty-one late-night calls between Jared's number and Amoura's. All of them after she'd gotten engaged to Kian Gilbert. The most recent one was four days ago, at 11:58 p.m.

'You didn't get this from me,' Chloe said.

'I never do,' I said. 'Thank you.'

She was quiet for a moment. Then, softer: 'Are you okay?'

I looked at the papers spread across the hotel desk. The receipts. The call logs. The seventeen letters I'd selected — the ones with dates, the ones with names, the ones that left no room for a man to say *it wasn't what it looked like.*

'Yeah,' I said. 'I think I actually am.'

---

While I was building my case in a clean hotel room twelve minutes away, Jared was at a beachside restaurant called Dune, sitting across from Amoura Greene for what he believed was the last time.

I know this because he told me later. He told me everything, eventually, the way people confess to priests — not for absolution, but because the silence gets too heavy to carry alone.

She wore white. Of course she did. Something soft and draped, her hair loose, the kind of effortless beauty that takes two hours to construct. She reached across the table and put her hand over his. She cried — just enough. Not mascara-wrecking tears, just a glassy shimmer at the corners of her eyes, perfectly calibrated.

*You're the only one who ever truly understood me.*

Jared drank his whiskey and felt like the tragic hero of his own story.

What he didn't see: her other hand, under the table, typing out *goodnight babe, thinking of you* to Kian Gilbert at 9:15 p.m.

What he didn't hear, under the music and the ocean and his own romantic narrative: the careful pivot in her voice when she said, *I just worry, you know, about starting over. If things ever got hard. If I ever needed — you know. Help.*

Jared told her yes. He told her he'd always be there. He meant it the way drunk men mean things — completely, and temporarily.

He walked back to his hotel in the salt air, hands in his pockets, feeling noble.

---

I laid everything out on the desk at ten o'clock.

Left side: the hotel receipts, the call logs, the printed phone records. Right side: the seventeen letters, each one in a clear plastic sleeve. Center: the Gilbert family's wedding itinerary, which I'd pulled from their public social media and cross-referenced with the venue's posted schedule.

The vow exchange was at eleven-fifteen.

Three hundred guests. The ceremony in the main garden, open-air, no easy exits. Maximum visibility. That was the moment.

I sat with it all for a while. Just looked at it. The whole architecture of a lie, laid out in chronological order under a hotel desk lamp.

Then I rolled up my left sleeve.

The scars were pale in the lamplight. Thin and quiet. I traced them with one finger — slowly, the way you run your hand along a wall in the dark to find the door. Not with grief. Not with shame. Just to acknowledge them. To say: *I see you. I know what you cost.*

I rolled my sleeve back down.

I stacked the papers into the folder. Clipped it shut. Set it next to my bag by the door.

I set my alarm for six.

Then I turned off the light and lay down on top of the covers, still dressed, and closed my eyes.

I slept. Deeply, and without dreaming, for the first time in months. The kind of sleep that comes not from peace, but from certainty — from a woman who has finally stopped waiting for someone else to tell her what is real.

Outside, the ocean moved in the dark, indifferent and constant.

Eleven-fifteen, I thought.

I'll be there.
