Chapter 2

I found them at 9:14 in the morning.

Norah's backpack was barely out the door. The preschool van had just turned the corner. I stood in the hallway for exactly thirty seconds, listening to the apartment breathe around me. Then I walked to Jared's study.

The locked drawer opened with the small silver key I'd found taped under his desk lamp six days ago. I hadn't touched it then. I'd just stood there, key in my palm, and put it back.

Today I used it.

They were in a shoebox. A plain gray shoebox, the kind dress shoes come in. I lifted the lid and saw the envelopes — dozens of them, stacked in neat rows, each one sealed, each one dated in his handwriting. His careful, precise handwriting that I used to love.

I counted them sitting on the study floor with my back against the desk. My lips moved but no sound came out. One hundred. Two hundred. By the time I reached five hundred and twenty-one, the morning light had shifted across the carpet and my legs had gone numb beneath me.

I carried the box to the bedroom. I emptied every envelope across the white duvet, letter by letter, until the bed was buried.

Then I sat in the armchair in the corner and waited for him to come home.

---

He walked in at six. I heard his keys, his shoes, the refrigerator opening. Then silence. Then his footsteps down the hall.

He stopped in the doorway.

I watched his face. The color left it slowly, like water draining from a glass.

"Esme—"

"Five hundred and twenty-one." My voice was very calm. "I counted."

He stepped into the room. "Those are private—"

"*March fourteenth.*" I picked up the nearest letter. "*I keep thinking about the way you laughed at dinner. Esme was in the next room and I felt like a ghost in my own house.*" I set it down. "That was Norah's first birthday. I made the cake myself. You said it was the best day you'd had in years."

His jaw tightened. "You don't understand what that year was like—"

"Tell me."

And he did. That was the thing about Jared — when the exit routes closed, he talked. He talked for a long time, standing at the foot of our bed, surrounded by his own words. He said he felt alone. He said I'd disappeared into the depression and left him behind. He said Amoura *listened*. He said he never stopped loving me, not really, that it was complicated, that a man could love two people in different ways and that didn't make him a monster.

I let him finish every sentence.

Then: "You told me I was paranoid."

"Esme—"

"You sat next to me in the dark and called me paranoid. While you had a shoebox of love letters in the next room."

"I was trying to protect you. You were fragile—"

"Don't." The word came out quiet and flat. "Don't use that."

He tried tears next. They came fast, which told me he'd cried them before — practiced, or at least familiar. He sat on the edge of the bed, his face in his hands, shoulders shaking. He said he was sorry. He said he'd end it. He said he'd call her right now, in front of me, and tell her it was over.

"She's marrying someone else on Saturday," I said. "It's already over."

"Then why does it matter—"

"Because *you* don't know it's over. That's why it matters."

He had nothing left after that. He went to the kitchen. I heard the cabinet, the bottle, the glass. I lay down on top of the letters and stared at the ceiling and listened to my husband drink himself into the couch.

---

After midnight, his voice came through the wall.

Low. Careful. The particular softness a man uses when he doesn't want to be heard.

I pressed my palm flat against the plaster and felt the vibration of it — not the words, just the shape. The cadence of begging. Of a man who had everything and was still reaching for more.

I rolled up my sleeve in the dark. The scars caught the thin light from under the door. Pale and quiet, like a sentence I'd been writing to myself for months.

I looked at them for a long time.

Then I rolled my sleeve back down, got up, and walked to the closet.

---

The bed was empty when I woke. I already knew it would be.

The shared airline app sent the notification at 4:47 a.m. *JFK → HPN. Jared Stone. Seat 3A. Departed.*

I stood in Norah's doorway. She was on her side, one small fist curled around her rabbit's ear, her mouth slightly open. Her breathing was slow and even and completely sure of itself.

I went to the kitchen. I reached behind the stack of winter sweaters on the high shelf — past the cashmere one Florence had given me, the one I'd never worn — and pulled out the manila envelope.

I set it on the kitchen table in the morning light.

The divorce papers looked very ordinary. Just paper. Just ink.

I put the kettle on and sat down across from them and thought about the Hamptons.
