Chapter 2

I stared at Caspian.

Not at the situation. Not at Estelle curled on the concrete in his jacket. At him.

His entire body angled toward her. His hand on her shoulder. His voice—the one that used to say my name in the dark—now soft and soothing in her ear. He was crouched beside her like she was the only person in the garage. Like I was an intruder in my own house.

The tire iron was still in my hand. I set it down on the concrete. It made a flat metallic sound that echoed.

"I want a divorce," I said.

Caspian didn't look up. He was helping Estelle to her feet, keeping the jacket wrapped around her. She was still crying. Performing it, I realized. The breathless sobs. The trembling. She leaned into him and he held her tighter.

"By tomorrow morning," I continued, "you'll have nothing left that I gave you. Not the title. Not the shares. Not your name on a single door in this city."

That got his attention.

He turned his head. Looked at me over Estelle's shoulder. And he laughed.

Not nervously. Not defensively. He laughed like I'd said something absurd.

"You're upset," he said, in the tone you'd use with a hysterical child. "We'll talk about this when you calm down."

He led Estelle toward the elevator. She glanced back at me once. Her eyes weren't crying anymore. They were bright and sharp and triumphant.

The elevator doors closed.

I stood alone in the garage surrounded by broken glass and the smell of expensive leather and betrayal.

My left thumb found my right wrist. Pressed. Circled.

Then I walked out.

---

I drove to my parents' townhouse on the Upper East Side. It was past midnight but every light was on.

Helena opened the door before I knocked. She took one look at me—at the glass dust in my hair, at whatever my face was doing—and pulled me inside.

"Chamomile," she said quietly. "Sit."

I sat at the kitchen island. The same one I'd sat at when I was twelve and sick. When I was sixteen and heartbroken over some boy whose name I couldn't remember now. When I was twenty-four and telling them I was going to marry Caspian Howard.

Helena set the tea in front of me. The blend from the small shop on Seventy-Third. She'd kept it stocked for eighteen years.

Walter came in from his study. He was still in his suit. He looked at me for a long moment and then picked up his phone.

"I'm calling Diana," he said.

"It's midnight," I said.

"She's awake."

He was right. Diana Holt answered on the first ring.

I heard Walter's side of the conversation. Clipped. Precise. "Full asset separation. Breach of fiduciary duty. I want every share certificate, every title transfer, every signature page he touched pulled and reviewed by morning. And Raymond Cho is going to file motions. Counter everything. Bury him in paper."

Helena sat beside me. She didn't ask what happened. She just placed her hand over mine and kept it there.

Walter hung up. He looked at me.

"It's done," he said. "He'll have nothing by Monday."

I nodded. I drank the tea. It tasted like safety.

---

Diana filed the divorce petition at nine a.m. Friday morning.

By noon, Raymond Cho had filed a response contesting the asset classifications. He argued that Caspian's position at Elliott Corp was earned through merit and performance. That the shares granted to him were compensation, not gifts. That the penthouse was marital property subject to equitable distribution.

He demanded mediation.

Diana called me. "He's stalling. He thinks you'll fold."

"He's wrong," I said.

"I know," Diana said. "But this is going to take time. Cho's good. And Caspian's not taking this seriously yet."

She was right.

That weekend, Estelle posted a photograph on Instagram. The penthouse living room. My Hermès throw pillows in the background. The caption: *Home is wherever you are.*

She tagged Caspian.

The comments filled with heart emojis and congratulations.

I stared at the post for a long time. Then I blocked her account and set my phone face-down on the table.

Helena found me in the townhouse library an hour later.

"She's baiting you," she said.

"I know."

"Don't give her the satisfaction."

"I won't."

But the next week, Estelle showed up at a charity gala on Caspian's arm wearing my diamond bracelet. The one Walter gave me when I graduated summa cum laude. The one I kept in the penthouse safe.

She smiled for the photographers. Caspian's hand was on her waist.

I saw the photos the next morning. Diana sent them with a single text: *He gave her access to the safe.*

I didn't respond.

I went to my parents' townhouse and found Walter in his study.

"I need you to accelerate everything," I said.

He looked up from his desk. "It's already moving as fast as—"

"Faster," I said. "I don't care what it costs. I want him gone."

Walter studied me for a moment. Then he nodded.

"Faster," he agreed.

That afternoon, I received a text from a mutual acquaintance. Someone I'd known since college. *Ran into Estelle at lunch. She says she feels terrible about the situation but that Caspian's love was just too strong to deny. Thought you should know she's talking.*

I read the message twice.

Then I deleted it.

My thumb pressed circles into my wrist.

I was done enduring.

I was done being the woman who stayed.

Caspian thought I would fold. He thought three years of humiliation had taught me my place.

He was about to learn how wrong he was.
