Chapter 3

Walter Elliott didn't raise his voice.

He never needed to.

I watched him from across his study that Monday morning, phone pressed to his ear, speaking in the measured cadence that had built empires and ended careers. He wasn't threatening anyone. He was simply stating facts.

"The Elliott family guarantees on the Howard portfolio will be withdrawn effective immediately," he said. "Yes. All of them."

A pause. Someone on the other end was arguing.

"That's not a negotiation," Walter continued. "It's a notification."

He hung up. Made another call.

I sat in the leather chair by the window and drank my coffee. Helena had brought it up an hour ago with a soft kiss to my temple and no questions.

This was the third call Walter had made this morning. There would be more.

"The Bergstrom account," he said into the phone now. "Reassign it to Whitmore. Today."

Another pause.

"I don't care if Caspian originated the relationship. Elliott Corp owns the contract. Move it."

He ended the call. Looked at me.

"Diana filed the response to Cho's motions an hour ago," he said. "She eviscerated every argument. He's asking for mediation again."

"No," I said.

Walter nodded. He'd expected that answer.

His phone rang. He glanced at the screen and answered.

"Raymond," he said. His tone didn't change. Still measured. Still calm. "Your client seems to believe Elliott Corp is a marital asset. Let me clarify. It's not. It never was. And as of this morning, Caspian Howard no longer has signature authority on a single account."

I heard Raymond Cho's voice through the phone. Louder than it should be. Agitated.

Walter waited until he finished.

"File whatever you want," Walter said. "We'll be ready."

He hung up.

I set my coffee down. "How long?"

"Until he has nothing?" Walter looked at me. "Two weeks. Maybe less."

I nodded.

My thumb pressed into my wrist. Circled.

"He still thinks I'll come back," I said quietly.

Walter's expression didn't change. But something flickered in his eyes. Something cold.

"He'll learn," he said.

---

The dinner party was at the Vandermere estate in Greenwich. Old money. Old names. The kind of event where business happened between courses and no one ever mentioned business directly.

I wasn't invited.

But Caspian was. And so was Estelle.

I heard about it from Diana, who heard about it from someone's assistant who'd been asked to arrange the seating chart.

"He's bringing her," Diana said over the phone. "Officially. As his partner."

I was in my parents' library. Helena was reading in the chair across from me. She looked up when I went still.

"Good," I said into the phone.

"Good?" Diana repeated.

"Let him," I said. "Let everyone see exactly who he is."

I hung up.

Helena set her book down. "Magnolia—"

"I'm fine," I said.

She didn't argue. But she didn't look away either.

I picked up my own book. Stared at the page. Didn't read a single word.

---

The account of what happened at the Vandermere dinner came to me in pieces.

First from Diana's contact. Then from another guest. Then from a third person who'd been seated close enough to hear everything.

By the time I had the full story, it was past midnight.

I sat alone in the townhouse library with my phone in my hand and tried to make sense of what I was reading.

Estelle had collapsed during the second course.

Not physically. Not a medical emergency.

A breakdown.

She'd started crying suddenly. Clutching Caspian's arm. Gasping something about her father. About the cemetery. About spirits and hauntings and old family superstitions.

The other guests had gone silent. Uncomfortable. The kind of discomfort that came from watching someone unravel in public.

Caspian had tried to calm her. Shushing her. Stroking her hair.

But Estelle kept talking. Louder now. Hysterical.

She said her father's ghost had followed her from the Howard cemetery. That it was angry. That it wouldn't leave her alone.

She said there was only one way to appease it.

An old tradition. A symbolic burial offering. Someone had to take her place in the ground. Briefly. Just long enough to trick the spirit into thinking she was gone.

She looked up at Caspian with tears streaming down her face.

"Please," she'd whispered. "I can't live like this."

And Caspian—the man I'd given three years of my life to, the man who'd shielded his mistress while I stood covered in broken glass—hadn't questioned it.

Not once.

He'd nodded. Pulled her close. Promised her he'd fix it.

The other guests exchanged glances. Uneasy. Skeptical.

But no one said anything.

No one ever did.

I read the messages again. Then I set my phone face-down on the table.

My hands were shaking.

Not from fear.

From something else. Something that felt like recognition.

I'd always known Caspian would choose Estelle.

I just hadn't known how far he'd go.

I picked up my phone again. Scrolled to Walter's contact.

Then I stopped.

Because whatever was about to happen—whatever Caspian was about to do to prove his devotion to the woman who'd destroyed our marriage—I needed to see it coming.

I needed to be ready.

I stood. Walked to the window. Looked out at the city lights blurring through the glass.

My thumb found my wrist.

Pressed.

Circled.

And I waited.
