Chapter 2

Lennox came home with roses.

Red ones. Two dozen, wrapped in brown paper, the kind of arrangement you buy when you need the gesture to do the talking for you. He set them on the kitchen island and came to me with his arms open and his eyes already wet, and I let him hold me because I didn't yet trust what my face would do if I stepped back and looked at him.

He smelled like hospital soap. I noticed that.

'I'm so sorry, Em.' His voice broke on the last word. Convincingly. 'I should have been there. I know that. I will never forgive myself for that.'

I said nothing. I pressed my cheek against his shoulder and breathed.

'It was Marcus's wife,' he said. 'From the office. She had a placental abruption, it was—there was no one else. She was alone. I couldn't just leave her in the waiting room.' He pulled back just enough to look at my face. His eyes were red at the rims. 'I know the timing was unforgivable. I know. But I'm here now. I'm right here.'

I nodded. I think I said something like *I know.* Or maybe I said nothing at all. I can't fully remember. I was watching his hands—the way they moved to my shoulders, steady and deliberate, the way they always were when he needed something from me.

He cried for a little while after that. I held him.

I made tea while he slept.

Four cups. No sugar. The kettle was loud in the quiet apartment and I stood at the island and watched the steam curl up toward the range hood and I did not think about anything in particular. I just stood there. Waiting for something to settle, or crack, or become clear.

The roses were still on the counter. Pretty. Expensive. Completely useless.

I looked at them for a long time. Then I opened my laptop.

---

I am not a dramatic person. I have never been the kind of woman who throws things or screams or collapses in a heap on the floor. When I am frightened or furious I go very still and very quiet and I think in straight lines.

So that is what I did.

I pulled up our joint account first. Lennox had always managed the finances—*you're busy, Em, I've got it*—but I had access. I'd just never felt the need to look closely. That thought sat in my chest like a stone as I scrolled back through twelve months of statements.

The transfers were not hard to find. I don't know why I expected them to be hidden better. Maybe he never thought I'd look.

Rayne Lawson. The name appeared for the first time eleven months ago. $3,200. Then again the following month. $3,200. Then $4,100—I looked at the date and opened a new tab and searched prenatal appointment costs in New York City without quite meaning to. I already knew what I was going to find.

I kept going.

There was an apartment lease in Brooklyn Heights. I found the wire transfer—first month, last month, security deposit, all in one lump sum eight months back. I looked up the address. A two-bedroom in a doorman building, three blocks from the Promenade. Nice. The kind of building you choose when you want someone comfortable.

I chose when you want someone comfortable.

I set my mug down.

The recurring monthly transfer had started exactly nine months before yesterday's date. Nine months before the night my husband stood in a delivery suite forty blocks north and photographed a baby in a blue blanket and texted his sister *He's here.*

I sat with that for a moment. Just sat with it.

The apartment was quiet. The city outside was doing its low nighttime hum, the particular sound Manhattan makes at two in the morning when it's not quite sleeping. Lennox's breathing was steady from the bedroom. Slow. Unbothered.

I looked at the numbers again. All of them. Methodically, the way I do everything when it matters—column by column, date by date, transfer by transfer. I cross-referenced the wire amounts against the screenshot still saved on my phone. The blue blanket. The tiny curled fist. *Welcome to the family, little man.*

The numbers told a story. A complete one. With a beginning and a middle and a last night that had happened simultaneously in two different hospitals while I counted ceiling tiles and he counted fingers and toes.

I closed the laptop.

I picked up my tea. It had gone cold. I drank it anyway.

The roses were still sitting there on the island, red and extravagant and already starting to drop their first petals. I looked at them for a long moment.

Then I got up, opened the cabinet under the sink, and dropped them in the trash.

I went back to the island. Opened the laptop again.

I had work to do.
