My Husband Bought His Mistress a Home with My Money Chapter 1

The ceiling tiles at Mount Sinai are white with small gray speckles. I know this because I counted them twice while the anesthesia wore off. Forty-seven tiles. Three with water stains shaped like nothing in particular.

The procedure was done. That was what the nurse said when I came around. 'The procedure is done, Mrs. Moore. You did great.' She had kind eyes and she squeezed my hand once before she moved to the next curtain.

I did great. My baby had no heartbeat, and I did great.

My phone was on the bedside tray. I picked it up.

Lennox: *Stuck in emergency meeting. On my way as soon as I can. So sorry, Em.*

Lennox: *Meeting running long. Thinking of you. Call me when you're out.*

Lennox: *Hey, you okay? Call me.*

After that, nothing. Just silence dressed up as a screen that wouldn't light up no matter how many times I checked it.

I kept texting him anyway. I don't know why. Maybe because the alternative was lying there in the dark understanding something I wasn't ready to understand yet.

The nurse came back at eleven. Then again at two. She brought me water and crackers and didn't ask why I was alone. I was grateful for that.

---

Forty blocks north, at NYU Langone, my husband was having a very different kind of night.

I didn't know that yet. But I know it now, so I'll tell it straight.

Lennox Moore—my husband of three years, the man I funded, the man I followed, the man I loved with the kind of stupid wholehearted certainty that makes you easy to fool—was standing at a woman's bedside in a delivery suite. Her name was Rayne Lawson. She was his ex-wife. That was what he had always called her: *my ex-wife Rayne*, said casually, with a small dismissive wave, the way you mention a parking ticket.

She was delivering his son.

He held her hand. He photographed the baby—swaddled in blue, eyes still shut against the light. He texted his sister Kennedy: *He's here.*

On the chair beside him, my messages lit up his secondary phone one by one. He didn't look at them. He was busy.

---

Kennedy arrived the next morning.

I heard her before I saw her. Her voice carries the way only people who've never been told to lower it can carry—loud and self-assured, rolling ahead of her down the hospital corridor like weather.

She came through the door in a cream blazer and full makeup, and the first thing I noticed was that she looked rehearsed. Not worried. Rehearsed.

'Emma.' She set her bag on the chair by the window like she owned the room. 'You need to understand that Lennox had no choice.'

I hadn't said anything yet. I hadn't even asked.

'He's a decent person,' she continued, 'doing the right thing. Rayne had a medical emergency and she had no one else. No one. What was he supposed to do, just leave her?' She crossed her arms. 'You're being dramatic about this. He was going to explain everything.'

I looked at her. 'Explain what, Kennedy?'

Something flickered across her face. Too fast to name. 'The situation,' she said. 'It's complicated. You don't have the full picture.'

'Then give it to me.'

She opened her mouth. Her phone lit up on the chair where she'd set it, screen facing up, and I saw it before she did.

A push notification. Instagram. A photo of a newborn wrapped in a blue hospital blanket, one tiny fist curled against his cheek. The caption read: *Welcome to the family, little man 💙*

Kennedy grabbed the phone so fast she knocked her bag off the chair. Her thumbs moved in a blur. Delete story. Confirm.

'I have to go,' she said. She didn't look at me. 'I'll tell Lennox you're—I'll tell him.'

She was out the door in under thirty seconds.

I looked down at my own phone. The screenshot was already saved. I had taken it the moment I saw the screen—steady hands, no hesitation—the way you do something when some quiet part of you has been waiting for exactly this.

I stared at the baby in the photo for a long time. Blue blanket. Tiny fist. *Welcome to the family.*

---

They discharged me at four in the afternoon. I took a cab home to the Tribeca penthouse alone.

The driver didn't make conversation. The Hudson was flat and gray out the window. I sat with my hands folded in my lap and the screenshot still open on my phone and I looked at the water without really seeing it.

Something had shifted. Not broken—I'd expected broken. This was different. Cleaner. Like a lens clicking into focus after a long blur.

Lennox had been at a hospital last night. Just not mine.

I thought about Kennedy's face when her phone lit up. The way she'd said *the situation* like it was a weather pattern, something impersonal, something that simply happened to people.

I thought about three years of *emergency meetings* and *running late* and *you know how it is, Em.*

I folded my hands tighter in my lap.

I knew how it was. I was just starting to understand exactly how it had been.
