Chapter 4

"The clock starts now. Forty-eight hours."

Karin slid a stapled twenty-page document across the mahogany table. The thick paper stopped inches from my hands, right next to the jagged green scrap of my son's destroyed notebook.

"Read clause four," the compliance head instructed, tapping the center of the page.

I lowered my gaze to the bold text.

The undersigned admits to the unauthorized expansion of ethical risk during the AURORA-1 trials.

"You want me to confess to your crime," I said, pushing the packet back toward her.

"I want you to accept reality," Karin countered. She pointed a manicured finger at clause seven. "You will surrender the blue audit drive. You will destroy all private copies of the raw spectrometer logs. If you refuse, the institute files a civil suit that will bankrupt you by Friday."

"I am not giving you the drive," I told her.

Karin grabbed a black remote from the center of the table and aimed it at the projection screen. The blown-up image of my forged login vanished. A live broadcast filled the white canvas.

The chyrons at the bottom of the feed flashed bright red: Institute Press Conference - Live.

Magnus stood at a polished acrylic podium. Flashbulbs strobed against his tailored charcoal suit.

"AURORA-1 represents an overwhelming success," my husband announced to the crowded auditorium. His voice echoed through the ceiling speakers of the hearing room. "We achieved complete cellular regeneration in ninety-four percent of the trial group."

"He is lying to the press," I told the five ethics board members still seated around the table. "Look at him. He is selling a toxic drug."

The board chairman folded his hands. "Dr. Nyberg is presenting the finalized data. As the sole corresponding author, he speaks for the project."

"Sole author?" My nails dug into the wooden table. "I built the data models. I ran the lab for eighteen years."

"Your name was removed this morning," Karin informed me. "You are a rogue element. Magnus is the visionary."

The camera angle shifted on the screen. Jonas sat at the technical control desk just off-stage. He wore a crisp white shirt, his hands resting on a sleek laptop. He looked completely divorced from the panicked boy in the server room.

"Next slide, please," Magnus requested.

Jonas tapped a key. An eighteen-page projection of line graphs appeared behind Magnus.

I leaned forward, my eyes scanning the blue and yellow lines. Slide fourteen. The immune response metrics.

The lines climbed steadily, then stopped flat at day forty.

"He cut them," I whispered, the sound scraping my dry throat. "Jonas truncated the curves."

"He optimized the visual presentation," Karin corrected.

"He erased the liver failures!" I slammed my hand onto the table, the sharp impact ringing through the room. "Those six patients spiked fevers on day forty-one. Their immune systems turned into storms. Jonas chopped the timeline exactly twenty-four hours before the toxicity hit."

Magnus smiled at the reporters, gesturing to the altered graph. "As you can see, the safety profile is flawless."

"I am stopping this," I said.

I reached into my pocket, my fingers brushing the hard plastic of the blue audit drive. I pulled it out and held it up to the board.

"I have the real curves right here," I declared. "I am releasing the raw logs to the media right now."

Karin laughed, once, without humor. "Do it. Hand the press unredacted patient medical files. Violate the GDPR and Swedish patient-data law on live television. Go ahead, Elin."

My hand froze in the air.

"The raw logs contain names, birthdates, and genetic markers," Karin continued, stepping closer to my chair. "If you post that data to clear your name, Swedish prosecutors could have you arrested for a privacy breach before the broadcast ends. You cannot expose the danger without committing a criminal offense."

I stared at the screen. Magnus was using the patients' legal right to privacy as a shield for his fraud. He knew I could not dump the medical records onto a public server. He and Jonas had boxed me in.

"You have forty-eight hours to sign the non-disclosure agreement," Karin repeated. "Or we destroy you in court."

I lowered the blue drive and slipped it back into my pocket.

"I do not need to expose the patients to prove the fraud," I said.

I pulled my phone from my coat pocket.

"Confiscate that," Karin ordered the two security guards standing by the door.

I stepped back, typing rapidly. I did not attach the medical data. Instead, I selected the metadata file I copied yesterday. The system logs showing the forged 8:42 p.m. approval date, the firewall bypass, and the IP address routing directly through Jonas's terminal.

I opened the encrypted portal for the Independent Medical Watchdog Group. A secure, blind-trust channel used by whistleblowers.

The first guard lunged, his heavy boots thudding against the carpet. He reached for my wrist.

I dodged to the left, my thumb hovering over the screen.

"Drop the device," the guard warned, grabbing my shoulder.

"Done," I replied, hitting the upload button.

A green checkmark flashed on the screen just as the guard wrenched the phone from my grip.

"What did you do?" Karin demanded, snatching the device from the guard's hands. She tapped the screen, trying to cancel the process.

"I sent the forged timestamps into an independent legal vault," I said, straightening my lab coat. "No patient data. Just proof of the digital break-in. You cannot delete it, and you cannot touch the server."

Karin glared at me, her composed facade cracking. "You just triggered a national regulatory audit."

"I told you I would protect the patients."

On the projection screen, the press conference shifted. A new subtitle scrolled across the bottom of the feed: Nobel nomination materials to be submitted today.

An older man in a tweed jacket stepped onto the stage beside Magnus. Dr. Aris Thorne, an eligible Nobel nominator and Magnus’s most visible supporter. He carried a leather-bound folder.

"It is my great honor to formalize this recommendation," Thorne said into the microphone. He pulled a gold-nibbed pen from his breast pocket and opened the folder.

Magnus smiled, playing the perfect picture of a visionary scientist. Jonas watched from the shadows, his face pale, his hands trembling slightly over the keyboard.

Thorne lowered the pen toward the thick parchment paper.

The tip hovered a fraction of an inch above the signature line.

From somewhere off-camera, a loud voice cut through the applause.

"Why are there six blanks in the raw data?"
