Chapter 5

"Why are there six blanks in the raw data?"

The voice echoed from the back of the auditorium, cutting through the applause.

Dr. Thorne froze. His gold-nibbed pen hovered a fraction of an inch above the parchment. A drop of black ink pooled at the tip, then fell onto the wooden podium. He pulled his hand away.

"What blanks?" Thorne asked, stepping back from the Nobel nomination documents.

Magnus gripped the edges of his acrylic stand. His jaw tightened, but his tone remained smooth. "A tragic internal matter, Aris. My former lead researcher removed those files last night."

I slammed my hands onto the mahogany table in the ethics board room. "He is lying!"

Karin stepped in front of the projection screen, blocking my view. "Watch the broadcast, Elin."

I pushed past her. On the screen, Magnus turned to the technical control desk.

"Jonas, display the access logs," Magnus ordered.

My son kept his head down. He struck the enter key. The eighteen-page graph vanished, replaced by a black terminal screen. Bright red text illuminated the auditorium.

8:42 p.m. - E.Nyberg - Data Purge Initiated.

"Elin grew unstable regarding authorship disputes," Magnus told the flashing cameras. "She attempted to sabotage AURORA-1 by purging our most critical control sets. I assure you, the missing patients are perfectly healthy."

"He is using my son to sell a toxic drug," I said, my voice falling to a whisper.

Karin checked her phone, her lips curving upward. "The media loves a scorned woman narrative. Look at the news alerts."

I glanced at the monitor. The chyrons at the bottom of the feed had already shifted. Lead Scientist Sabotages Billion-Dollar Drug Over Credit Dispute.

"You trapped me," I said, turning to face the head of compliance. "If I release the real data to clear my name, I expose the patients' medical records and face a prison sentence."

"Exactly," Karin replied. "You are contained. The board will finalize your termination by midnight. Do not make this harder on your family."

Two hours later, I sat locked inside the offline quarantine lab.

The heavy glass walls isolated me from the main corridor. No internet connection. No network access. Just a standalone metal desk and an isolated terminal. Security had escorted me here to pack my personal files, leaving me with a single guard stationed outside the door.

I pulled the hard plastic case from my pocket and plugged the blue audit drive into the port.

"Show me the edits," I muttered to the empty room.

I typed in my decryption sequence. Lines of code populated the screen, stripping away the polished interface Magnus presented to the world. I hunted for the true timeline.

The system returned twenty-three distinct tampering events. Twenty-three times someone went into the mainframe and scrubbed the liver failure markers from the six dying patients' profiles.

I pulled up the first hash value. The origin point. The moment the fraud began.

I expected to see Magnus's administrative override. I expected his signature initiating the cover-up.

Instead, a different ID string flashed on the screen.

User Key: J.Nyberg_Auth.

Jonas.

My son had initiated the first strike. He didn't just follow his father's orders at the end; he laid the groundwork. He built the backdoor using the exact cryptographic key I taught him to code when he was seventeen.

My stomach twisted. I grabbed a pen and dragged it across a blank sheet of printer paper, recording the hash values. Twenty-three strings of undeniable proof. Twenty-three betrayals.

I wrote down the exact timestamps. Each one aligned perfectly with a spike in patient toxicity. Every time a patient's liver began to fail, Jonas logged in and smoothed the curve. He erased their suffering to protect his father's investment.

The pattern also showed intent. He had not run one blanket correction and walked away. He returned after each new laboratory alert, opened the affected profile, and removed only the values that threatened the published safety window. Between deletions, he checked the journal submission dashboard. The timestamps placed ambition beside every erased warning.

I printed a de-identified checksum list and signed each page. Even if security seized the disk, those hashes would let an outside examiner prove the raw files had existed before the upload. I folded the list into the lining of my lab bag.

I finished copying the final string of numbers and capped my pen.

A sharp rap on the glass broke the silence.

I jerked my head up. Magnus stood in the corridor, illuminated by the harsh overhead lights. He held a manila folder.

I didn't move. I kept my hand flat over the blue drive.

He bypassed the wall intercom. Instead, he pulled a single sheet of paper from the folder and pressed it flat against the reinforced glass.

Supplementary Agreement of Reinstatement.

I walked to the barrier, stopping inches from his face. The thick glass separated us, muffling the ambient noise of the lab.

"Read clause one," Magnus said, raising his voice to penetrate the glass.

I looked at the bold text pressed against the pane. The undersigned agrees to surrender the blue audit drive and all physical copies of the raw data.

"You just ruined my name on national television," I said, my voice carrying through the heavy door seals. "And now you want a deal?"

Magnus didn't flinch. "I secured Thorne's provisional recommendation. The investors are thrilled. But the independent watchdog group you messaged is demanding an internal review by morning."

"They want the raw data," I said. "They want the proof you hid."

"They want a scapegoat," Magnus corrected.

He lowered the paper slightly, his eyes locking onto mine.

"The watchdog group traced the first alteration back to the source," Magnus explained. "They know it wasn't my terminal. They know about the backdoor."

"You made him do it," I said, pressing my palm against the cold glass. "You forced Jonas to write that script."

"I asked him to fix a problem," Magnus replied evenly. "He chose the method. And now the auditors are asking questions about his specific user key."

"He is twenty-two years old, Magnus. You are going to let them destroy him?"

"I am offering you a solution."

Magnus tapped his index finger against the glass, right over the signature line of the document.

"Sign it, Elin," Magnus said. "Give me the drive, and I can convince the board Jonas acted alone."
