MY HUSBAND AND SON GAVE MY PLACE TO HER Novel Cover

MY HUSBAND AND SON GAVE MY PLACE TO HER

For three years, she starved herself and worked double shifts, saving $320 each month toward her son's first car. Then she saw the title—and another woman's name: Vanessa, her ex-husband's girlfriend. Her eighteen-year-old son had known for a week. When she refused to pay, he shoved the insurance binder at her, insisting she was good for nothing but footing bills. Richard funded the car, and the three drove off, leaving her stranded twelve miles from home. They expected her to return, subdued. Instead, her wedding ring sat on the table—and she was gone.

Chapter 5

"Cancel the pending wire," I told the automated system, my voice harsh over the roar of highway traffic.

"I didn't understand that," the robotic voice chimed. "Please say—"

"Fraud," I snapped. "Agent."

Hold music played. I paced the concrete slab of the bus stop. I kept my eyes on the banking app on my phone screen, terrified the yellow pending text would turn green.

"Account security, this is Greg. May I've your name?"

"Beth Carter. Someone just initiated a transfer of three thousand, nine hundred and sixty dollars out of my joint checking account."

"Can you verify your security pin, please?"

I rattled off the four digits.

"Thank you, Beth," Greg said. Keys clacked over the line. "I see the pending transaction here. The secondary account holder, Richard Carter, initiated a transfer to an external checking account at Capital Trust."

"He doesn't have my permission. Stop the transfer."

"As a joint owner, he is authorized to move funds."

"He already drained eleven thousand dollars thirty minutes ago," I said, my grip tightening on the phone. "That money is my direct deposit. He is emptying the account."

"I can place a temporary freeze on the pending transaction while we review the activity," Greg offered smoothly. "However, I can't permanently lock him out of the funds without a legal order."

"If you let that transfer clear, I'll hold this bank liable," I warned. "What's my legal right right now?"

"You're entitled to withdraw your verifiable half of the remaining balance."

I stopped pacing. "Move one thousand, nine hundred and eighty dollars into my solo checking account. Right now. Leave the rest frozen."

"Processing that for you," Greg said.

The sound of his typing felt agonizingly slow. I watched a city bus roar past, blowing grit onto the sidewalk. The wind whipped my coat around my knees.

"The internal transfer is complete," Greg announced. "One thousand, nine hundred and eighty dollars is now available in your personal account. The remaining balance of the joint account is temporarily frozen."

"How long does the freeze last?"

"Seventy-two hours. You'll need to provide legal documentation to extend it."

"Send me the confirmation email," I said.

"Sent. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?"

"No."

I ended the call. I sat heavily on the cold metal bench.

I opened the document center in the app. I tapped the download icon for the past nineteen months of statements. The PDF loaded, filling my screen with tiny black text.

I zoomed in on the last six months.

If Richard was funneling our emergency money to Vanessa now, he had likely done it before.

My thumb scrolled down the columns. I bypassed the grocery runs and the utility bills. I stopped at a charge from April 14th.

Midwest Auto Supply. $142.50.

Right beneath it, Richard had typed a custom memo. Business lunch.

I stared at the screen. I remembered April 14th. I had worked a twelve-hour shift at the clinic. Richard told me he bought lunch for a hiring manager at an upscale steakhouse to discuss a new job prospect.

I tapped the screen, scrolling to May 3rd.

Midwest Auto Supply. $89.99.

Memo: Networking lunch with recruiter.

I found six more. June 12th. July 8th. August 22nd. Eight charges in total.

Midwest Auto Supply sat two blocks from Vanessa's apartment. It was the specialty shop she used for her custom floor mats and imported wax.

There were no clients. Richard had been unemployed for eleven months. Every dollar in that account came from my overtime shifts. He had taken my money, labeled it as professional expenses, and spent it on Vanessa's vehicle maintenance.

I did not guess about an affair. I did not wonder how long they had been sleeping together behind my back. I simply opened the photo editor.

I selected the red marker tool. I drew a thick circle around the first charge. The bright ink contrasted sharply against the black and white text. I swiped to the next page and circled the second. I marked all eight.

I saved the edited files into a hidden folder on my phone. Evidence.

A strange calm settled over me. The panic from the dealership faded, replaced by a cold, sharp focus. Richard always called me paranoid. He told Cody I was suffocating because I tracked our finances.

He was wrong. I was observant.

I pulled up my contacts and tapped Helen's name.

"Beth?" Helen answered on the second ring. Her background was noisy, filled with the clatter of pots and pans.

"I need your spare room," I said. "For two weeks."

The kitchen noise on the other end ceased instantly.

"What time?" Helen asked.

She did not ask what Richard did. She did not ask why I was not staying in the house I paid the mortgage on. She offered exactly what I needed.

"An hour," I replied, my voice finally cracking just a fraction. I cleared my throat to steady it. "I'm catching the bus from the Ford dealership on Route 9."

"Are you bringing Cody?" Helen asked, her voice dropping lower.

"No," I said, my throat tightening. "Cody made his choice."

"Okay. Do you want me to come get you?"

"No. I need the ride to sort out my next steps."

"Do you need me to bring my truck later? We can pack your closet right now."

"If I go back there today, I'll do something that will get me arrested," I admitted. "I just need a bed."

"The side door is unlocked," Helen said. "The keys are on the counter. Take your time."

"Thank you."

I lowered the phone. The relief of not having to explain myself washed over me, loosening the tight knot in my chest. I had a place to sleep. I had half of my emergency fund. I had the bank records.

The low rumble of an engine broke through the noise of the highway traffic.

I looked up.

The dark blue Ford turned off the main road, its tires crunching over the gravel edge of the dealership lot. The vehicle rolled past the rows of used sedans and headed straight toward the bus stop.

The exhaust echoed loudly, vibrating against the metal frame of the bench. The brake lights flared red.

The car stopped fifteen feet from me.

Through the tinted windshield, I saw Vanessa. She was adjusting the air conditioning vents, entirely comfortable in her new passenger seat. Richard sat in the back row, his head bowed as he typed on his phone.

The driver's side door swung open.

Cody stepped out into the cold wind. He slammed the door shut behind him.

He did not glance at the showroom. He did not look for Marcus.

He shoved his hands into the pockets of his gray hoodie and walked straight toward me.
